***Chris Laviano named Starting QB***

Forgot to congratulate Chris on earning the starting spot and hope he proves that he can help RU beat Washington and have a winning 2016 season .
As for Chris venting his frustrations , we should look at the way he was treated by many of the RU fanbase then ask ourselves if we're acting like he did using the frustration he vented as our excuse not to support him..

Yes. You said it yourself. "Kid".

The "kid" made a mistake (two) on social media. Great, let's move on.

He has the support of teammates (for both years). Support now of two coaching staffs. Is going out and competing with the name of our alma mater on his chest. So if the teammates and (new) coaching staff can get behind him, why shouldn't we?
So Ash agrees with Flood, oh that's just beautiful, beautiful, just frigging beautiful.
His teammates liked the free ID's he could get them, and most of them
are in jail now, or off the team anyway. Rettig will start the second half,
against Washington if Allen is not ready.

I am an alum and was not offended by his tweet, I would have advised him not to send it. But people need to get over themselves.

I'm over myself. You got a look into how he really thinks. You can ignore it or not. Or cheer away for a terrible QB who doesn't respect the support you may or may not put into the program.

You can support who you like. You can also convince yourself that he's wearing the name of your alma mater on his chest. His social media quotes indicate he doesn't care if it's your alma mater or not.

I don't need to convince myself, I can see who he is playing for.

Who threw the first punch? The fans booing about a kid returning to a game (not to mention all that was said on here and other places during the season) or the social media post?

I would argue we threw it first.

I can't believe the negative a-hole comments already. Hello...he won the QB competition...again!! What, are we gonna boo him when he lines up for first snap in Seattle?
Believe it. The internet allows for such stupidity. At least when it was Lucas vs Fortay people had to say these things out loud and get shot down face to face. LOL.

For those who hate Laviano, be honest with us....you also hated Teel and / or Nova, right?

I will say a few thing about this.

1. At least we know he actually earn it for real this time.
2. CL seems to look good in training and not so much during actual games, unlike Flood I really don't think that Ash and crew will keep him in the game no matter what.
3. This doesn't speak well for Flood's QB recruiting. If he beat out teh other QBs, what does that say about them? We might have to suffer until Tyler Oden is ready to go next year.
4. All that being said, I really hope that CL can pull a Nova and have a great final year as a starter.

This. I'd like to think this staff won't religiously stick with a struggling QB. I'm hoping the days of KSU '12 are behind us.

Based on all the news reports coming out of camp, the QB race was too-close-to-call heading into this week.

Given that reality, It's not absurd -- or a-hole-ish -- to wish the other guy got picked, is it..?

For crying out loud, it was literally "1a." & "1b."...

He also ran into the locker room after the spring game. That was this season....not last.

Does not sound that way, the backup up position is still up for grabs.

Looks like its going to be a long year. At the first sign of trouble please burn Oden's redshirt. We need some hope around here. There will be several years to replace him if he turns out to be the great QB we hope for. Are we going to "save" him for when we really need him in five years? Burn it. Burn it. Burn it. Burn it. Hey that would make a good chant.

Makes sense for the present. -Laviano has a lot more in-game experience than any other QB on the roster and he earned the job via his hard work, so congrats to him.

The difference from last year is that if CL isn't clicking, Ash will unquestionably pull him and put in the guy who's eventually named Laviano's back-up.

No matter what, though, with our new coaching staff, you can be sure that if the guy under center is struggling or simply isn't getting it done he's gonna come out.

An Ash quote from an OTB piece on the QB situation reinforces that point:
"Ash reiterated that Laviano has to translate his consistency from practice to the game. Depth is there to make a move at any point, he said."

Plausible. We did see this once before in 2009. Laviano is clearly the closest to being game ready so he wins. He has to continue to work hard to keep the job. Competition is a great thing. Let's support the guys who are on the field and not root for our team to lose to we can say "I told you so." We have way too many on this board and at games who seem to love to see us play poorly. It's sad really.
Agree, and I will root for Rettig when he comes in for C.L. at half time..

what would that be? the 5 yard TE out?

He doesn't have the arm strength or accuracy to throw that to a receiver before the LB/DB closes. His bread and butter completions last year were screens and short passes underneath. Not many outs. Even short ones.

I was not a fan of how much Laviano played last year. However, I don't get a lot of the comments here.

Last year's system required the WRs to win the physical matchup to get separation (which no one but Carroo/Grant could) or have your strong armed QB fit the ball into a tight window (which Laviano can't do).

There has been a ton of successful spread offenses in recent years with QBs that did not have particularly strong arms and if the new coaching staff believes Laviano offers the best chance of success they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Why do people think so many spread QBs and WRs amount to nothing in the NFL? Because they didn't have the physical skills of an NFL player but the system covered up their weaknesses.

You guys realize that just because some of us wanted the backup to start it doesn't preclude us from cheering on Chris when he takes the field, right..?

Maybe I'm going to be told it's because I don't have premium, but I've read NOTHING that says that any of the other QB candidates have looked better than Laviano in camp. If that's the case, then why the melt down when he gets the start?

So you admit you were booing also.

Here is the challenge that Ash has with Laviano as the choice. Laviano is on a very short leash with the fans which puts Ash on a shorter leash then he deserves this season. This team is going to struggle and when they do, I would assume that Ash would want the fans supporting the team and not turning against the team. With Laviano at the helm than it is much more likely to happen than with any other QB.

Now, when the team struggles, which is highly likely, changing out QB's when the fans have given up makes you look dumb. If Allen was the starter and struggled early, Ash would have gotten the benefit of the doubt that the QB cupboard was bare. His comments in the press about not caring about Laviano's relationship with the fans are somewhat troubling to me.

Either Laviano was leaps and bounds better than everyone else the past two weeks or I think Ash may be making a mistake.

Why do you think that we won't cheer for Chris if he succeeds? I feel that we are wasting Hayden's talent just like Schiano wasted Savage's talent and Wanny wasted Flacco's. I will cheer for Chris at the game but I just don't think that this is a good decision.

Yes, some of you.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and the QB always gets the most blame. That is expected. But booing the QB when he is having his best game against MD was stupid. Saying we have no chance to win now with CL as the starter is also stupid.

So why do you want the backup over CL? Those discussions are healthy if you can give good reasons. We have too many with no clue who make up negative comments about him with no facts to back them up.

Wow, great insight to QB play. LOL

Yeah Baby: It's simple really -- I don't think Chris has a big enough arm. The route tree is fairly limited to between the hash marks or curls. That magnifies the problems at WR against the press.

Carroo's superior ball-tracking skills bailed Laviano out quite a bit IIRC -- even on some of his TDs.

I dont care who gets "named the starter" in mid August. I only care if he's going to get taken out of the game if he sucks. For the love of god can we please have a short leash at the QB position for one year?

I admit I was at home dealing with a sick infant but, yes, QB play was frustrating all around last year. My problem wasn't with Laviano but more with Flood. How many times do you run into the wall before you give up? Maybe Rettig would have had the same results but how do you not try and see? I will hold Ash to the same standard...if CL is not playing well I hope we try something new.

Why should Ash care about the relationship with the fans? For Ash it is about who he and the staff thinks give them the best chance at winning. It isn't a popularity contest. If he is coaching based on who the fans believe should play, we have larger problems.

The kid who disparaged Rutgers alums on Twitter? Get behind him?

idiotic Rutgers alums who booed a kid who got up and played after taking a hard hit, simply b/c they are too STUPID to realize that their savior is as good as a 4th stringer as of right now.

Again, the correlation between political views and Laviano hate continues. its so funny.
