Claypool to ND

Yeah, that definitely sucks. -When he didn't commit when he was here I didn't get the warm and fuzzies about RU being his college destination.

He would have committed the day of if we were getting him. Ugh

That was pretty much expected. They will probably sign one more WR type in this class. I say type because I don't think all of these WRs will play that position. If they could get either Harmon or Duboise (sp)...that would be very good.

i figured he'd go to Oregon.Great team,closer to home.
With all the talent they have, the Ducks didn't blink an eye over his announcement. They were too busy celebrating the two commits they got at The Opening instead.

Rutgers wasn't really in the picture, ND and Oregon were supposed to be his top choices with ND the expected choice.
So don't get on RU for not pulling in a recruit that had other plans.
But know RU put itself in the picture , but the chances of being the choice was mighty slim with a kid that
has Notre Dame and Oregon as the schools he is leaning the most towards.

So in the hunt for recruits all I can say is :

and not worry about the fish that go away, nor blame anyone for that fish choosing a school it was leaning towards even before it visited the Scarlet Knight pond.

Not surprised by a someone outside the US choosing ND. It's a subtlety bad choice, but you just don't get that subtlety if you haven't followed the team and the school and lived and breathed college football from within the US where it's such a huge sport for several years. If I was really good at soccer I'd want to play for Manchester United, but I have no clue about European soccer.

Darn. Was really hoping we could pull him in. Oh well, it is what it is. I really do believe we will fare well in the end with those that have already committed.

"Subtlety" bad choice? So Rutgers would have been a better choice? Why?

They had something like Penn State has now when Kelly was first hired, they were recruiting very well and there was some sense that they could be a top 5 team and they were for a moment. Things have gone downhill for them since, but of course expectations are always high. Which makes for a bad combination. Kelly's coming off the hinges a bit. To me it's like that awesome stock you buy and it goes up and you think this is awesome it's going to keep going up and then it doesn't and it still doesn't, then it drops a bit and you hold it and then bam it crashes. To me ND is gonna have a couple average seasons, people will get mad, Kelly may even get fired. Them not being in a conference is slowly hurting them I think. They are not a likely playoff team unless they go undefeated, which they won't as USC is on the rise and always playing them. Ohio State and Michigan have just entered Midwest recruiting ass whooping zone with their Championship and new big time coach.

I'm not saying Rutgers is definitely the better choice of the two. For me Rutgers is starting lower and slowly rising vs ND which is starting higher and slowly falling. Both could take drastic moves in the next few years though in those directions. I am saying I wouldn't choose ND for that reason, there are better options of schools that are good and moving in the right direction if you are lucky enough to get those offers which Claypool was.

That's a bit of exaggeration in there. Are you suggesting that in a few years RU could surpass ND as a program when you said "both could take a drastic moves in the next few years"?

The only team I think you could make a clear cut statement that is a better program than ND right now that offered Claypool was UO. And frankly, given where he lives, I thought they'd be the choice.

Of course not, when you talk about Notre Dame as a program you're basically talking about Ohio State, Alabama, USC level because of their consistency through decades of football. However, even those teams experience ebbs and flows. Right now, ND is a good football team but they are losing some ground. I'm sure they'll rebound, but if I were a recruit I wouldn't think it was likely in the next 4 years and I'd have some concerns about the bottom falling out in my junior or senior season.

In terms of his offers, when I see a guy with offers from ND, Oregon and Michigan and then just a handful of others I usually think that if Claypool went to Michigan State or Baylor or something and said if you offer me I'll commit they'd probably jump on board, so sometimes offers can just be a matter of colleges feeling they are too late to the party.

Pretty sure he knows what a degree from Notre Dame means regardless if he lives in Canada. He's from Canada, not Kazakhstan
