Interesting idea that I wish a New jersey paper would do. Show New Jersey HS players what kind of Rutgers team they would be playing on if a good chunk of the top players stayed home. This story asks what if Rutgers recruited NJ like Ohio State recruits Ohio.

And keep in mind, this isn't "if Rutgers got EVERY NJ recruit".. it focuses on the top recruits in the same numbers that OSU got them from Ohio. It is very possible that OSU's national recruiting footprint prevented them from taking more Ohio recruits.

If Rutgers got a good share of the top recruits, it could very well be that they would get even more top players than this list provides because they could take more from NJ than OSU does from Ohio.

A bit of hyperbole here, though the article makes a valid point. Ohio State doesn't get to pick and choose which 50% of Ohio Top 10 recruits they land. That's a very strong team, but also a cherry picked one.

and mdk01... you don't think OSU gets to pick and choose which recruits they get? They got the top 6 one year. the top 6 in their state. Certainly they have some choice in the matter. And if they lose out on one it could be because they already have 2 recruits at the same position who are better.

Guy the Corey Clement vs. Paul James is some what mute this year as both got hurt and are not playing at the same level they both did in High school. But the point of the article is valid and we take all the "Valued Players from the B1G alone and we could be contenders for a NC in football.
Point not made we keep Jersey players that went to other B1G schools and they become less powerful as teams and with that transferred talent we could be winners
Example Wisconsin, if we keep Cory and Tanner They become less dynamic, thus we would have an advantage

Lack of a true tradition continues to play a major role in this. Anyone who has traveled to many of the football power states can't miss the states' love affair with their school.
This just doesn't exist in NJ. At least, nowhere near what it is like elsewhere.

A couple of things work against RU, the school got serious about being competitive in Div 1 about 15 years ago. OSU has been a national power since the 1950s. Also, the overly negative and self critical culture which exists in NJ, lack of state pride, etc. Over time, things should get better ...but it will never be quick enough for many.

See rutgersdave's "great salesman" comment above. Like him or not, Schiano understood how critical having a vision and being able to sell that vision really was/is. People scoffed at his proclamations about winning national championships, but he (having coached at traditional powers and in the NFL) knew that fortune favors the bold. You can't take a timid or excessively measured approach to this challenge here. You need a little swagger. Be bold. Throw it in their faces.

Whenever a player from NJ did something good in a game he would always say to Frank Broyles, "You know Frank, if (insert name of RU coach at the time) could keep some of them boys home in New Jersey, they might have something there at Rutgers."
