Can anyone with basketball coaching experience explain why in college (and in HS) the offense is so much different than it is in the NBA? Why not spread the floor, run isolation, clear out when the post man gets the ball on the block, etc? Seems to me that teams who clear out the lane and spread the floor give their playmakers the ability to operate, and shooters to get open shots. The old school pick, pass, cut and hope someone finds their way open isn’t as effective as good spacing. I think this style would do us some good with penetrators like Sanders and Baker, spot up Shooters like Williams and Thiam, and a big guy like Freeman on the block with room to maneuver. Our other bigs stay on the baseline and crash the boards when a shot goes up, and moving forward we recruit more shooters and essentially play a three Guard offense. Am I oversimplifying?

First, Freeman doesn’t play big. Is not his game. Next, our bigs have no offensive skills whatsoever and in our offense are only supposed to set screens or get out of the way.

We have three solid guards and Freeman and if any couple of them shoot the lights out we have a chance. Trouble is, that most D1 teams have better 4s and 5s than we do. Our big guys look the big-time part for sure, but they aren’t ballers. Nevermind UHa’s leading scorer #5 who dominated, but even #44 who without looking i would guess was a 1 Star recruit dominated as well.

We basically play 3 v 5 on offense unless Pikiell goes all small but then we’d get destroyed on defense.

Another problem is that our offense already gets a lot of layups and bunnies for Freeman around the rim, but he misses most of them!

How are they solid guards if they don't threaten you from outside ?

I think what we're seeing at this point is that people have scouted and seen enough tape on this team and they're going to make RU beat you from outside.

The team will see a ton of zone going forward.

Individual talent.
Too many complementary/project type players on the roster and very few if any consistent go to scorers .Defense and rebounding can keep Rutgers in games but ultimately shooting is the decider in winning/losing.

Irish....I’ll put it another way...were UHa’s guards better than ours ? Were SBUs ? Would you rather have those other backcourts on our team ?

True, we don’t have Steph Curry or Douby but what we do have is plenty good enough if we also had frontcourt talent. If you expect a college team to have 3 guards who can score 75 a night because the bigs can’t score 10, you are unrealistic.

I agree with you to an extent about ourbigs having little offensive skills, but they have some. Pike has to put Duke or Sa or Shaquille on the block and give them the ball to try to make a move to the hoop or take a short shot or maybe even pass diagonally to one of our shooters, Issa, Mike or Geo. The failure to go down low except to Deshawn and the total lack of minutes for Duke the last 2 games have been baffling to say the least. You cannot have them just set screens or get out of the way as you say. Deshawn 's low post baby hook against Seton Hall to start our rally when we were down 10 with 6 minutes left was a key part of the comeback. Duke can do that . Our spacing has been bad and needs to be really spread out to allow Corey and Geo to dribble penetrate , dish or score.

Now last game when they went high 1-3-1 zone, we never got the ball to the middle , then to the wings and baseline until late and in OT, which has to be on the coaching staff to an extent. It was nice to see Issa and Mike hit 3 each from beyond the arc but it should have been a lot more and although Deshawn missed a baseline bunny and a baseline dunk late , there should been a lot more attempts earlier if the defense would have been attacked properly . Pike has been awesome in a year and a half but he has had a rough last 2 games. I am hopeful he is out of his 2 game slump.

The big reason NBA offense is so much different from college is because the players are a lot more skilled. Spacing only works if you have people who can shoot. Clearing out for a post player only works if you have a post player who can actually score from there. Dribble penetration is only effective if there is a perimeter threat. If you watch the better offensive teams the NBA, the common thread is that they're all good screening teams with shooters that know how to read the screens and get open without the ball. Even the better college teams don't do that particularly well. Most can't even run a decent pick and roll, which is the cornerstone of most NBA offenses.
