Corey Sanders tweet

If he comes back and leads us to the tourney, he’ll go down in school history. He will also be so well known that imo with his music following + basketball prowess, even if he doesnt go pro he could probably have camps in NJ with his name plastered on them where he makes 75-100k over the summer

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

He has been the focal part of the offense for 3 years. How is he going to lead us to the tournament?

It’s delusional to think we will be close to a tournament team next year. Let’s aim for getting out of the B1G basement.

Hope a more mature Corey comes back next year with something to prove like he did the last three games. Also hope the drama ends soon either way. I doubt if he doesn’t know what he’s going to do already.

Maybe because the talent, experience, chemistry, strength, discipline and hunger wouldnt be anywhere near the same next year as it was in Corey's first year as a Scarlet Knight.

Insanity is you and your bizarre dislike of everything Corey Sanders.

Didn't Nebraska go from like 13th to where they finished up like 4th? Granted not likely for us.

It's possible possible to make the tourney if Corey comes back but we would need Corey back and another piece. Juco, 5th year or impact fresh.

Every year is a different and new year. Adding Palmer and Copeland as transfers, and an additional year for Roby to continue to develop completely changed Nebraska's dynamics. The injection of new players for Rutgers, as well as, continued development for Eugene/Issa etc. will also change the team, so who knows.

I never said I didn't like Sanders. Can you win with a guard that needs the ball in his hands to be successful and can't shoot from the perimeter? Add to the fact we will be playing a 4 and 5 that aren't a threat from the perimeter. We are VERY easy to defend.

He is the basketball version of a HR hitter who bats .220 and strikes out 200 times (Chris Carter type). When he gets hot you feel like you can't win without his power. When he goes in a slump you feel differently.

I have always said Corey is valuable on defense and we would lose a step if he weren't there. I just think offensively when you net everything out he doesn't help on the average night.

You can't debate how bad we have been offensively the past 3 years...276th, 231st, 303rd

....and there is a chemistry issue on the team. It will improve for sure next year, but how much remains to be seen.

I don’t disagree with this. I guess the key question is can Corey function in an offense where he shares the ball more with the added pieces next year? But I certainly would like to see Corey return.

I would say that subtracting Freeman next year will likely help with help with chemistry and the general flow of the offense.

Your first statement is just, well, ridiculous. Take Sanders out of the this lineup on an "average" night and you'll see he's pretty valuable.

I can debate that this team 3 years ago would have never had a shot to make the nice little run they did in the BIG tournament this year.

The team 3 years ago wouldn't have almost beaten FSU, MSU and Purdue twice.

Sanders isn't perfect but also isn't a god. He has flaws but with the current roster he's incredibly more valuable than you give him credit for and if he comes back I think we would have an outside shot at making a run at the tourney, albeit a very small shot.

If I were Sanders I would come back for one year, as long as:
1. Pike / Knight worked with him to drive / shoot from the left
2. Improve his shooting
3. Improve his NBA status
4. Must be able to average > 20+ ppg . Period!

MO
Achieving the goals cited above depends on not only Sanders improvement but also the other players on the team .Averaging more than 20 points per game seems a lofty goal without far better 3 point and foul shooting success.

The big question is the replacement. If the replacement is an empty spot then there is a lot of uncertainty for '18-'19.

Asking Baker and Souf to take on the minutes at PG will make me very anxious. It would then be essential for Kiss and Mathis to get 25+ MPG and Issa would keep his current role unless Harper Jr. impresses.

What I/we don't know is will/would Issa come out of his shell if/when Freeman and Sanders aren't here.

Eugene is the unquestioned leader without Corey here. With Corey here it could get interesting.

Corey certainly isn't a bad teammate, but I am going to guess to a man most wouldn't be terribly upset if he doesn't come back.

Assuming Sanders leaves, the team will take on a new identity in which they have to rely on each other in clutch situations, and not just on Sanders.

Whatever happens, Rutgers will still be on an uptrend.

We have some players who have the work ethic to take "another step."

Imagine Omoyuri continuing to take steps alongside Kiss, Baker, and Thiam.

Up!

I disagree with your overall thesis that the team would be better off without Corey. Strongly disagree actually. But at least the above statement is a thoughtful analysis and makes us think about the counterpoint. A well said counter actually with a fair comparison to how streaky Sanders is aka "Road Corey" vs "Home Corey" during the second half of this year.

Defining a uptrend has been rather difficult at Rutgers because it doesn't translate into wins on the score board or ranking in the B1G.

Why do we only look at improvement as wins or losses? You can see improvement regardless of the w/l column. The team is playing with more effort and energy than in years past. It hasn't been enough to get them out of 14, but improvement and trending up is definitely there.

Until the tournament, I could have cared less whether he came back. The flashes of being a complete player were few and far between vis a vis his seeming inability to change his game. That being said, the tournament showed us that he can be consistent and a valuable asset.

Right. Every year we have not gotten sufficient talent to join Sanders to take us to the tournament. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So let's hope we're adding talent around Sanders and not acting insane. Good point.
