3. Washington
Safety Budda Baker and cornerback Sidney Jones anchor one of the stingiest pass defenses in the nation. Baker and Jones are candidates for All-America honors after leading a secondary that held conference opponents to just nine passing scores and a No. 2 ranking in pass efficiency defense in the Pac-12. Senior Kevin King is expected to start opposite of Jones at cornerback, while sophomore Jojo McIntosh round out the starting group at safety. There’s quality depth here with the return of safety Ezekiel Turner and cornerbacks Darren Gardenhire and Jordan Miller.

They’re losing some ‘swag,’ but Huskies hope to stay healthier with new Vicis helmets

After their first week wearing a helmet designed to reduce the risk of concussions, UW players have mostly positive reviews — but they're sad to see the all-black and all-white combinations go.

UW runs a pro style single back offense. Seeing how its the first game of the season, and the fact UW has zero game film on an Ash coached Rutgers team, you can expect more from the running game than you can from the passing game. I'm guessing some safe passes for the most part ... bubble screens, throws to the RB, etc...

Other than Washington RB Myles Gaskin, the playmakers are on the defensive side of the ball. Budda Baker - safety (SI pre season All American), Sydney Jones - CB (All PAC-12), Azeem Victor - LB (2nd team All PAC-12), Elijah Qualls - DT etc... the defense is loaded even after losing two guys to this last NFL draft.

I'm going to predict a Washington win .. something like 27 - 13.
UDub will come in confident and expect an easy win. While they won't take Rutgers lightly I expect them to have a fairly vanilla gameplan both on offense and defense so that they don't show too many cards for future conference foes.

UW will have a vanilla game plan for the fact there is ZERO film on a Chris Ash coached Rutgers team. I mean seriously ... how do you game plan for a team that you have no film on?

As far as UW overlooking Rutgers ... Washington went 7 - 6 last season and I'm betting that coach Petersen reminds them of that on a daily basis. I don't see Washington beating the spread though. I see a low scoring game that will be controlled by both defenses.

No. 16 — Washington

Every year there’s a team projected to make a giant leap. Washington is that team in 2016. Here’s why. The Huskies went 7-6 in 2015 and three of those losses were by six points or fewer. With a couple breaks, Washington fans could probably convince themselves last season could have been a 9-4 or even 10-3 campaign (We won’t remind you of the Boise State opener, UW fans).

A highly-touted sophomore quarterback who shows flashes of excellence as a freshman is also appealing. Jake Browning fits that description. Browning completed 63 percent of his passes in 2014 and threw for 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Though if Washington does take a step forward, Browning needs to feast on more than just weak opponents. Nine of his touchdown passes and two of his three 300+ yard games came against Sacramento State, Utah State and Oregon State.

Browning’s 2015 supporting cast is largely back as well. UW returns 15 starters including RB Myles Gaskin, who ran for 1,302 yards in 2015. Safety Budda Baker is one of the best in the Pac-12 and four starters on the defensive front seven are back too.

We’ll find out pretty quickly about Washington’s standing in the Pac-12 North. The Huskies play Stanford (Sep. 30) and Oregon (Oct. 8) in back-to-back weeks.

I'm really bummed. I am getting off a ship the morning of the game and had for a few weeks realized it was the same day as the game, but I thought it was 2pm start time (which it is in eastern time). With 11am start time and a sadly rather difficult venue to get to (considering we will need to find a place to drop luggage first) - it seems near impossible to attend now =(. I love road games.

Husky Stadium is a unique venue for sure but you still have the game on TV and munchies. :)

7. Jake Browning, QB, Washington
For a team coming off a 7-6 season, the hype train surrounding the Washington Huskies sure has picked up an impressive amount of steam heading into 2016. A trendy pick to win the wide-open Pac-12 this year, there’s a lot to like about the talented team from Seattle that has a very impressive and relatively young starting 22. Most of the optimism surrounding the Huskies has to do with Browning taking the leap from good to great and delivering some breakthrough performances after flashing sky-high potential in 2015 as a true freshman starting quarterback. Now he gets back a big weapon in speedy receiver John Ross and it should go without saying that if Browning puts it all together and lives up to the hype, the Heisman conversation will return to Montlake once again.

Preseason College Football Rankings 2016: Winners and Losers from AP Poll

Winner: Washington
Washington has received some attention as a Pac-12 North Division contender, and the offseason is only getting friendlier.

After opening the Amway Coaches Poll at No. 18, the Huskies check in at No. 14 in the AP poll. The only conference opponent ranked higher is defending champion Stanford, which is eighth.

Quarterback Jake Browning and running back Myles Gaskin headline a solid offense, and Washington's secondary is among the best in the nation. The well-rounded roster should have little trouble dispatching Rutgers, Idaho and Portland State to begin the campaign.

If the Huskies avoid a surprise at Arizona, they'll enter a Friday night showdown (Sept. 30) at home against Stanford undefeated and likely as a Top 10 team.

9 longshots that could win the national championship

1. Washington - 35/1
Do you see a loss on their schedule? Remember, this team had the best freshman quarterback this side of Rosen, an excellent stable of running backs and receivers, and the best defense in the Pac-12. Oh, and a coach that made Boise State what it is today. The Huskies should be your favorites to win the Pac-12 this year, and they could easily do it without a loss. They probably won’t be the worst team in the playoff either. While most of the teams on this list are get-in-and-see-what-happens picks, you don’t have to stretch much to see the Huskies playing for the title.

Bleacher Report's 2016 Preseason College Football All-American Team

Safety: Budda Baker, Washington

Votes Received: 11

Budda Baker is the face of the Washington hype machine this offseason, at least from a defensive perspective. But while the Huskies offense is expected to become elite this season with its returning young talent, Baker has made sure the defense is already fantastic.

The Huskies had the top defense in the Pac-12 last season, and Baker was a huge reason for that success. While his statistics won't necessarily blow fans away, his impact on every single game was evident as he patrolled the center of the Washington defense with tremendous pass-coverage skills. This year, he's bigger, stronger and eyeing a potential All-American run on a Huskies team getting some Pac-12 title hype.

Together with star cornerback Sidney Jones and the versatile Darren Gardenhire, Baker will lead one of the nation's fiercest secondaries into the 2016 season. He's the last line of defense at safety, and opponents find it nearly impossible to get past this quick-twitch Husky star.

Second Team: Jamal Adams, LSU (four votes)

"With Rutgers, it's not hard to sense a little boost with the head coaching change and the growing experience of youthful talent. Even if you think Washington will be better this season, this is still a team that was pretty so-so last season and some of those positive projections might fall short. They're just a little unproven in this role as such a huge favorite over a team that isn't really that terrible. I'm taking the 26.5 points and the Scarlet Knights."

Give Ash 3 - 4 years to get his players in the recruiting pipeline and I think Rutgers will be off to the races. He just needs time.
