FULL 2016 BOWL PROJECTIONS

Rose Bowl Ohio State vs Washington Jan. 2 Pasadena, CA Big Ten 1 vs. Pac-12 1

Washington's bounced between hyped and overhyped and backlashed all offseason. Putting them in the Rose probably qualifies me for Washington Overhyper status, but I'm not calling for an 11-1 team here. This looks like one of several 9-3ish Pac-12 North teams, and it gets Stanford and USC at home. Yeah, the Huskies have to play at Oregon and Utah, but like I said ... 9-3ish.

The Dirty Dozen: How Pac-12 Maxwell Watch List Players Can Win the Award

Washington - Jake Browning

Browning set QB records in high school that would be make video game numbers seem ho hum. He holds the national record for most touchdowns in a season in high school (91) and most total (226). Though he did not set any records at Washington yet he had a strong true freshman campaign and has helped put Washington back on the powerhouse map. The previous Washington record for touchdowns in one year is 33 held by Keith Price. The new record to look for is 36 by Jake Browning with 4,800 yards to boot. Possible yes. Likely not since Myles Gaskin will certainly nab some of Browning's thunder with his own record chasing.

Washington - Myles Gaskin

The most talented freshman running back in the country last year by far, look for Gaskin to accelerate into a dark horse campaign for the Maxwell. Gaskin's skills could give McCaffrey a run for his money. If Gaskin can get his YAC (Yards after Contact) above 5 yards then expect him to set some yardage and touchdown records at Washington as well as win the Maxwell award.

The Huskies are the team I cover, of course, but a little sanity is called for right now on this hype train in the media. It's been my opinion for quite some time that they were still a year away from reaching the heights they haven't seen since they went in the tank in 2003. But others seem to have a lot of confidence in this Husky team. If not in the team, then in the coach. You give a lot of talent to a guy like Chris Petersen, then championships will be won and fans will remember what it was like to be Top Dawgs. New fans will discover new joys, and they all lived happily after... The question is: Is it still too soon to expect such things in 2016? The Huskies return 17 starters, and nine are on a defense that only allowed 16 points per game on the average in 2015. Gone areTravis Feeney, Taniela Tupou, and Corey Littleton. But back are Elijah Qualls, Greg Gaines, Vita Vea, Azeem Victor,Keishawn Bierria, and arguably the best secondary this side of the Mississippi. Offensively the biggest loss is WR Jaydon Mickens, but Jake Browning is back at QB, Myles Gaskin at TB, Dante Pettis at WR, and big time speed with WR John Ross and Darrell Daniels. Washington is one good offensive line away from making a national title run. If this OL, that returns just about everyone, shows up and consistently executes, then watch out. This is an offense that is going up against the conference's best defense week in and week out in practice. Back in the old days this is why Washington was consistently a winner. And this is why defense wins championships.

Schedule: The Huskies have a generous OOC schedule this season, opening at home against Rutgers, followed by Idaho and Portland State. The Pac-12 opener at Arizona will be an immediate challenge because the Huskies beat the snot bubbles out of the Wildcats last year and so Rich Rod's squad will be looking for retribution. But then the fun starts when Washington hosts Stanford in a Friday night game. This could be a huge stepping stone in a championship run in the North. Followed, of course, by that trip to Eugene. But these current Huskies aren't the least bit intimidated by Oregon or Autzen and believe they can win. Last year the Husky defense slowed a strong Oregon offense to the lowest yards all season. After Oregon the Huskies get Oregon State at home, followed a tough road trip to Utah, then Cal. The Huskies will come back home to play USC, who they beat last year, and then Arizona State, who they haven't beaten in 9 seasons. The Apple Cup could be judgement day this year. If it were in Seattle, then it might not be as much of a challenge, but it's in Pullman. The Huskies have the best shot at winning if it doesn't snow. Remember all those years when the Huskies would be on a conference championship run and then come to Pullman and get spoiled by the Cougs?

Key to Success: As stated above -- this is going to be about the offensive line for the Huskies. Controlling the line of scrimmage isn't a daunting task for these Huskies, not as long as they do it on the offensive side of the ball and do it consistently.

Has anyone actually read any of these?
Some posters on here read the team reviews .. which makes sense. Tells ya how many starters are returning, etc... this thread is my way of psychological warfare. :)

PAC-12 preview

Washington

2015 record: 7-6 (4-5 Pac-12)
2015 finish: T-4th North

Overview: Washington is a trendy pick to win the Pac-12, even after winning just four conference games a year ago. The Huskies should take a big leap with most of their top players returning, including sophomore QB Jake Browning, running back Myles Gaskin and deep threat John Ross. Browning showed flashes of his potential last year, but did so against some pretty poor defenses. Can he take the next step?

The defense is good, too — perhaps the league’s best. Safety Budda Baker is an All-America candidate and corner Sidney Jones Jr. is an all-league performer. I’d expect big things from middle backer Azeem Victor as well. UW has an uninspiring non-con slate before jumping into Pac-12 play. Back-to-back games against Stanford (a Friday night home game) and at Oregon should tell us if this team can jump into the national picture.

Best case scenario: The Huskies blaze through the non-con and past Arizona heading into the Stanford and Oregon games. UW splits those (or wins both), jumps into the Top 10 and has a fairly clear path to double-digit wins, the Pac-12 title game and even the CFP.

Worst case scenario: The Washington hype dies quickly with back-to-back losses to Stanford and Oregon. The Huskies right their footing, but drop a few more games down the stretch en route to a very respectable bowl game.

Predicted 2016 conference record: 7-2

Dawg - just curious do you post this much on every opponents site, or your own?
Oil work is dead up here so I'm killing time until the union hall picks back up. I do post on two Washington boards and one Washington Facebook group there along with two PAC-12 FB groups.

Dawg - all these posts lauding your huskies are soooo intimidating. :joy::grimace::weary::cry: Our guys just might not show up for the game and forfeit to the mighty huskies. For your well being, I hope your guys live up to the press clippings and go on to win a national championship after we kick your asses next weekend.

Hey Dawg who steps up in the WR this year? Haven't heard much about the LB's for U-Dub?
UW lost two starting WR's so it's pretty much on John Ross who happened to miss the entire season last year. He's fast though ... he was hand clocked at 4.25. The WR position is UW's worst this season. Young and inexperienced.

UW lost two starting LB's to the NFL but they're still strong in that position with All conference Azeem Victor and next to him would be Keishawn Beirria. They did lose a 2nd string LB for the season last week due to a broken ankle in practice.

College Football's Most Controversial Teams for 2016 ... At Least by the Rankings

Washington

High: 7 (Sports Illustrated)
Low: 21 (Lindy’s)
Median: 17
Athlon: 11

When Athlon ranked Washington No. 11 in our preseason top 25 and picked the Huskies to win the PAC-12, we knew it would be a surprise. Washington hasn’t won a PAC-12 title or won more than nine games since 2000. Two other publications that hit newsstands with Athlon had Washington ranked 21st (Lindy’s) and 20th (Sporting News). Then two outlets put the Huskies in the top 10 — Phil Steele at No. 8 and Sports Illustrated at No. 7. Washington’s positives are clear. The Huskies have 17 returning starters, and they’ve been among the PAC-12’s best on defense the last two years. In a 7-6 season, Washington clobbered Washington State, beat USC on the road and three of their losses came by one score (Boise State, Oregon and Cal). The drawbacks are easy to find, too. Washington simply hasn’t been a top 25 program for most of the last 13 years and they’re in a division with Stanford and Oregon, who have accounted for the last seven PAC-12 championships. A lot of people will either look smart by picking Washington or will look foolish.
