Dan Hurley

Masiello reportedly wants the job. He'd be my first choice over Hurlet, who turned us down once before.

Masiello is also a better coach, in my opinion.
Of course he wants the job - he wanted it 3 years ago too,

Are you really gonna knock dan for not making the tourney. He had Wagner on the brink and had the team do a 180 after 1 year, rhode island wouldve been top 25 this year if their two best players didnt get hurt. And when his two best players get hurt he doesnt get blown out every single game and go 7-25.

Dont want to hear about injuries and am very concerned with .500 record at URI. Losing to a bad Fordham team scares the heck out of me too.

Or maybe they know that's who Hobbs wants - you know, like reporters do.
Maybe. Maybe Hobbs has told them who he wants because that would....that would....nope, can't think of a reason why it would benefit Hobbs to leak that info to those guys. Sorry.

On the other hand, I read Zagoria's piece and it reads like a full page ad taken out by somebody who wants Hurley to have the job. Top 25 team this year if it hadn't been for those injuries. Maybe he'll bring all those great players to Rutgers with him. No mention of mediocre record as a coach, etc., etc.

You're probably right. There's no history of NJ reporters putting their own agenda ahead of solid reporting.

he did very well at Wagner, he got very close at URI rebuilding and missed last year but over 20 wins, this year derailed by injuries. Its not like he is declining...very very well connected in NJ and respected. NJ guy coming back home to coach the state university...big credibility there

please stop this pettiness....URI was a crap 7-25 when he got there...he had a year derailed by injuries..he just beat Dayton who is going to the NCAA tourney...Bo Ryan lost to pathetic Rutgers what does that matter

his star dimmed, maybe 3 years ago but he had a terrible year this year...Hurley much much better perception wise

He hardly turned Arizona St around, if he had he would not have been fired.

Danny turned two dismal programs around and as someone here stated if he had a healthy roster would have finished in the top 3 of the conference this year and will definitely be a top pick to the win the A-10 next year.

There are warts with him (that Maryland incident is one) but beggars can't be choosers here. Not convinced he would say yes but he needs to be the first call.

RI had won 20, 26 and 23 the previous three seasons. One bad year does not make a dismal program.

Rhode Island under Baron won 26,23 and 20 games. Baron had bad year and was gone. They had a good program. Sorry did not see above. Not like he took over a boston College program.

Hurley has 0 NCAA Tourney appearances in 6 seasons as a HC. Why is everyone clamoring for him? He may get it done here but I'm not sold & would laugh him out of the room if he demands 7 years again.

URI had 5 winning seasons under Baron (20-14, 26-10, 23-11, 21-12, 19-14) prior to that 1 awful season of 7-24.

Another way to look at it is that they won 76 games the four years before he came and 62 since he came.

He may end up being the best candidate, just don't say he turned the RI program around.

Hurley doesn't excite me at all as a candidate. That's just more of the same. Give me Sendek all day ahead of Hurley if that is a real option.

Or that it was a dismal program or that it was some kind of a great coaching feat or turnaround.

Baron really got a raw deal. Built Rhode into a nice program. Deserved far better.
Was there 11 years and the natives got restless because of not being in the NCAA in any of those 11. His last season was bad enough to cost him his job.
Won't say he got railroaded even though he left Hurley a program that had one bad season of its last 6 years under Baron

Neither coach was close to Al Skinner when he was there.

Or Tom Penders. Really is a good little program. Also amused by the irony that the the same people who ripped Eddie for arguing injuries are doing mental gymnastics to justify Hurley's record in light of injuries. Double standard much. Ignore those recent pesky 8-21 and 14-18 years too. Move along... nothing to see here.

You can stop this unless you want to cough up a name
Relax...told you last week he was done, even though that was obvious. Hurley is not at the top of the list from what I understand.

yep..perfect time to jump fro URI. The small segment of our fanbase who dislikes him better get over it
Bac, If I were you I would be very concerned about this guy being your next coach he has really not gotten over the hump at URI. He is an absolute lunatic on the sidelines. I think you were on the right track when you mentioned Sendek.

I get that Hurley would be a candidate but I'm not a big fan for all the reasons mentioned above. Wasn't a fan of him when EJ got hired and nothing he's done since has really change my opinion of him. I like Sendek better and some of the other lower tier names as well.

If it's a Jersey guy other than Hurley, Dooley seems to fit the mold of the type of guy Hobbs has gone with in his last 2 hires but a slightly better version in a sense. Willard/Ash were assistants to very successful coaches and Dooley was a 10 year assistant to Self another very successful coach. On top of that though, we've gotten a little peak into how he might fare as a HC because of his time at FGCU. Solid job from what I can tell and it's not with the same dunk city style from what I read. He's remade them more into a defensive team with efficient offense, I guess maybe a poor man's version of Kansas. A trip to the NCAAs this year too. Sendek is my first choice but I wouldn't be against Dooley even though I see lack of enthusiasm about him here. Could he be another Norm Roberts? Maybe but in this instance, unlike Norm, you have a little glimpse of how he's done as HC before you hire him.

Anyone hear announcer on Ohio state game about RU. Stop going after Jersey guy and just get best coach.
I agree with that and have always said such for all our searches. If the guy is local that's a bonus but just find the best guy. You can always have some support staff/assistants be more local. I only mentioned Jersey guy because above one SHU poster was saying Hurley isn't the jersey guy being looked at. After Sendek though, Dooley IMO is as good a choice as most of the other names mentioned. I like Cluess too, Masiello also fits the mold of a possible Hobbs choice and another Pitino disciple.
