Dan Mullen's contract at Miss State averages $4.25 million. His buyout is $1.4 million. NJ state taxes are about 4% higher than Mississippi. So we would need at a minimum a 5 year contract averaging $5 million a year, a $1.4 million buyout. then we would need to give him money to hire assistants, maybe $750k for OC & DC, $250k for the other positions. So $3 million per year for assistants. We would need to lower academic standards for JUCOs so he could recruit like he did at Miss State. We would need to hire a bigger scouting/evaluation team and a bigger academic support staff to keep the unqualified kids eligible, assume per year $1 mil for the extra staff. And we should throw in Schiano's old house (which we didn't purchase for some reason when it was reasonably priced) for another $1.5 million.
So by my conservative calculations we need at least $48 million to make a competitive offer. But if I'm Mullen I wouldn't take anything less than a 7 year contract. That pushes it up to $66 million.
So are you going to write the check for $66 million or should I?
While I do not see RU coming up with the money for Mullen at this time (though I can hope), I think you are overstating the numbers.
Mullen currently has 3 years left on a contract that will pay him $13 million over those 3 years (extension guaranteed him $4.275 million over 4 years, less the $4 million he got paid in 2015, the 1st year of the extension).
I think a 5-year contract guaranteeing him $20 million to $22 million might be okay ... gets him $7 million to $9 million more than he is currently guaranteed. Especially if he really wants out of Miss State. So let us say $22 million. Not sure why you would think RU needs to guarantee 7 years to Mullen or anyone else. RU is not a turnaround situation ... RU has been to a bowl game 9 of the last 11 seasons ... we have issues, yes, but are not starting from scratch. But let's say it has to be 6 years ... that is $26 million.
In re assistants ... assume the $3 million per year total (Miss State's current assistant salary budget is about $2.7 million) you state ... that is per year. In 2014, RU's assistant pool salaries was $2.45 million, with Friedgen's salary of $500,000 leading the way.
There is no way RU will loosen requirements to allow an infusion of JUCO players - that is just not going to fly. And even if RU did, your $1 million per year estimated extra costs for support staff is also ridiculous, and not needed.
All in, I would say that over 6 years, RU would have to pay $45 million for the total staff ... which is about $7.5 million per year, on average. RU's current coaching staff salaries was about $3.4 million per year ... so to get a guy like Mullen, RU would need to pay about $4 million per year more, in total, for all coaches, than they have been paying.
RU's share of Big Ten money, I saw somewhere, only increases by about $1 million per year for the next 2-3 years, before ballooning by an additional $8 million per year in the last year of the phase-in ... I may not have those numbers exactly nailed, but somewhere around that. That does not take into account the amount of money that may come in after the Big Ten negotiates a new TV contract for 2017. I believe RU gets about $11 million in 2015-2016, well below the $26 million or so (rough guess) most Big Ten teams get. Upon the negotiation of the new TV contract there are guesses that the per team payout could rise to anywhere between $35 million to as much as $45 million. Just trying to put this all into perspective.
