I think Daniels is a transitional up and down player that can get baskets that only Sanders can. He is not a half court player that you need to win at this level consistently, unless you have a very strong staff that highlights his abilities. Right now, the Eddie offense is very much a free flowing, see the play/make the play type of offense, but that feeds into Daniels seeing space and believing he can make a play happen....likely because he can perhaps make that play once in a while in practice.
It is why I wasn't exactly that broken up regarding Kwe Parker's decision to decommit, he was an explosive athlete, similar to Daniels, that has the capability for that highlight reel moment in transition, but would stall an offense in a half court set.....Parker and Daniels are similar style players that needed an overhaul on how to play actual basketball.
What is somewhat surprising is that Sanders is playing under control early in his career and has forced up very few shots and is looking to get others involved, while Daniels is at times looking to generate his own offense, outside of the offensive flow. Sanders eventually will transition into that role and although the game flow should have been much better with a 12 point lead last night, the game didn't get away from Sanders. He played under control and didn't settle for a jump shot and drove to the basket to get the potential "and-1" that was called an offensive foul. I was somewhat concerned that Daniels followed Myles Mack a little too much last year, when Myles looked for his own offense. Sanders isn't following Daniels lead in doing so in the early stages of his career, which is a good sign so far.
I'd like to be sitting at 5-2 right now, but this season is all about improving the basketball IQ and flow on how RU plays and improving the defense along the way. If that happens and we pick up a couple of pieces or a rumbling or two regarding a transfer into the program, RU is at least on the right path for next year, where Johnson replaces Daniels and fits better for how RU wants to play.
