I have no link to provide, but I just saw a segment on ABC's Women's NCAA Basketball coverage where Dawn Staley read an open letter to C Vivian Stringer thanking C Viv for all the influence she has had on Dawn's career...and life. I will try to find it on line, as I'm sure it will show up. It should be must viewing for all of us Rutgers fans, me included, that start spouting off about how Coach Stringer has had the game pass her by, Coach Pike has lost control of his team, Coach Schiano is a lousy game coach, etc, etc....we all know who we are lol! Coaching is more than just wins and losses despite the budgets and saleries and I am actually proud of all of our coaches, especially since coaching at RU has a lot of challenges not found at other schools. If you can find it give it a listen...actually brings a tear to my eye...and it has changed my view of all of our coaches, especially Coach Stringer.

Thanks for sharing! CViv is a legend who should be able to decide when she wants to retire. I’m old enough to remember when the only Rutgers athletic program worth paying attention to was women’s bball.

Did you read the times article about her?

Thank you for the link! And, I will catch up with the Times article.
Dawn's video was great but the discussion afterwards on ABC/ESPN was also quite good.
I cannot find a link to that discussion and I don't think it will be repeated like their other half time segments.
Maria Taylor, Carolyn Peck and Andy Landers all had praise for Coach Stringer based on their personal experiences. Andy pointed out that he and Coach Stringer are contemporaries and Stringer always had class; mentioning the difficult accomplishments of bringing Cheyney State, Iowa and RU to the Final Four. And other effusive comments.
Carolyn (who won the championship with Purdue in 1999) said that Stringer showed her that it was possible for an African American woman to succeed.
So overall the open letter as well as the commentary was very positive and respectful of Coach Stringer.
Good to hear such praise and it was unexpected to have such a segment in the middle of a game not involving RU.

All three of the people on the panel you pointed out were all very complimentary. Andy Landers' comments were especially nice, I think, because I believe RU played his Georgia teams a couple times when he and C Viv were the head coaches...believe we upset him in an NCAA Tournament one year. Seems like I can remember C Vivian saying good things how well prepared Landers' Georgia teams were (she used to say the same things about Villanova's coach, Harry, I think, but I cannot remember his last name). You're right, the best part of these compliments is that they were conveyed at a surprising time and place...good of ABC to air that when they did. We've been pretty lucky in Women's Basketball....only two coaches in, what, 45 years? And, both in the HOF...pretty good hires, lol.

Then you haven’t been a fan to long. To not admit there is a problem here is ludicrous. Do you run a business and pay the money these coaches get for sub standard seasons .Uhhhhh no you don’t. Hobbs can say what he wants but saying “ she should be able to choose when she goes” . No you don’t ... that’s being dumb regardless of the Hall f Fame title. Pay her for her worth sure but then you bring in a younger coach like Dawn Staley and pay her 2 mil with incentive clauses. The game has passed her by and it happens to everyone.

This is a 3-year old story that ESPN recycled because RU and SC both made the tourney this year. It's a great story, but not something that happened recently.

Over 2 decades... or nearly 90% of CVivs time on the banks.

I’d agree with you for most coaches, but legends leave on their own terms - especially after being one of the few bright spots in RU athletics for most of that time.

And if Hobbs allows her to stay that’s his baby. Time for change . You must like mediocrity .

Someone posted that CVS‘s contract is up in 3 months. If that is true and we intend on extending her contract wouldn’t they have announced something by now?

I think 5-6 years ago it could have been possible but Rutgers womens hoops has tumbled so far off the actual radar its no longer in the realm of realism

no...I think we had the profile of a strong womens program which we dont have now, Staley was at SC and rapidly putting that program on the map but now seems really entrenched. She is from the east coast so if she ever wanted a change but very unlikely at this point...would take an ginormous amount of money and the level of hoops played in the Big 10 is way below the SEC and as i said our profile as a program has diminished.

i know she brought it up but CVS herself never had a problem with recruiting kids to RU given the facilities

I think CVS was still able to recruit near the top of the B list. The A list players were fairly absent for a number of years, now we attracted some of the A list players.

Dawn was never coming to Rutgers once she went to South Carolina. Had we approached her when she was at Temple, maybe. But no reason to think she will leave South Carolina for anywhere, really, she is very well paid, has built the program, and owns it.

Stringer has been RU coach since 1995.

Who posted that?

The contract info was in the Nj.com article this week when they reported Diamond was in the portal. Stringer mentioned in an interview last fall, she and Hobb’s were working on an extension since her contract was up this summer.
