PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 17, 2019) - Rutgers rising junior Lori Char has qualified for the 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur next month in Mississippi. She becomes the first Scarlet Knight to earn entry into the Championship during RU’s Big Ten era and the first overall since Melanie Chambers in 2013.

Char earned her position in the field by tying for first with a one-under 71 in qualifying action at Kapolei (Oahu, Hawaii) Golf Club on Tuesday. She carded six birdies during her round on the par 72, 6,104-yard course.

The Amateur will be held at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss., Aug. 5-11. Of the 156 entries to participate in stroke play from Aug. 5-6, 64 will advance to match play before a 36-hole championship match on Aug. 11.

A 2019 Big Ten Conference Scholar Distinguished Scholar with a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a communication major, Char competed in nine tournaments in 2018-19, registering a 79.83 scoring average and carding a season-low round of 73 at the Lady Buckeye Invitational. The two-time Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Division I All-America Scholar tied for 43rd at the Juli Inkster Meadow Club Invitational in March with a season low 227 (75-77-75).

Char has contributed to Rutgers women's golf’s success both on the course and in the classroom under head coach Kari Williams. The team was recently recognized as one of the nation's top 25 programs in academic performance by the WGCA for a third consecutive year. With six student-athletes named All-America Scholars, RU maintained a 3.781 team grade point average in 2018-19 to place first among all Power 5 conference women's golf programs and eighth among Division I schools.

Rutgers concluded its season ranked 84th in the nation with a 300.07 scoring average to establish a new program record. The Scarlet Knights accumulated a school-record 274 birdies in the process.
