Does Winowich get a good look in spring ball?

I thought I was told in no uncertain terms a while back when I asked this very question here that this guy was a running back....period.

Things change and we have a very good RB room. His skills may very well be better utilized at LB that’s all.

He was much heralded…
Not sure how many available snaps there are for Gabe, Ed Guerrier and the incoming freshman when you have Campbell (transfer), Raymond, Benjamin and Brown (if and when healthy) all ahead of them. They likely won't be in the mix for non-garbage time snaps until 2026.

I'm not 100% convinced Sam Brown comes back. There's a part of me that thinks he may medically retire, especially if he's set to graduate in May.

He didn’t “pop” or “flash” in the Spring game but his measurables are impressive. Undersized fullback type with good 40 speed. Currently listed at about 220 lbs.

Not sure a guy who was realistically a senior in HS would "flash" in the spring game after being on campus a month.

Exactly. I double checked his measurables and he really is a bit of a freak. Not sure how those will translate to BigTen ball but he’s certainly not out of place.

I think while he may be a tad small for a TE and too big for a slot, he's got the tools for both. I think Brown may be done. Gabe can slide in there.

Personally I think he could be a Skattabo type kid, strong fast fb, can also catch some flairs. Would love to see him in that role instead of Defense. Fits our style

Skattebo is listed at 215 lbs on most sites but I’ve seen him listed as heavy as 225 lbs which actually seems light based on the eye test. But I don’t think he is anywhere near 5-11….seems more like 5-8…and is an absolute bowling ball.

What’s his 40 speed ?
The 40 speed is an overrated metric. It’s more about short area quickness and explosion. It’s also about vision, balance and toughness. KM is not going to break off 70 yard runs but he will have many great 5, 10 and 15 yd runs.

I don’t know how much of a “freak” he is . I don’t put a lot of stock in HS test numbers. We will see. If he was that much of a freak he would not behind a true freshman (Raymond) and RS freshman (Benjamin) at RB.

Fine… what’s his 10 yards time { acceleration} ?
What’s his 5-10-5 time ( agility} ?

Gabe is in a tough spot, if he sticks at RB he's behind 3-4 guys. If he moves to LB he'll be behind a lot of guys. His best move, unfortunately, may be to go elsewhere for playing time. Not sure if that would be P4 or down a level.

One of our overriding needs is speed at the LB position, someone who has inside outside speed, we constantly lost edge contain, and as K-state showed we really had difficulty containing speed on the edge, I’d Winowich has that kind of closing speed LB could be his best shot. Or we need An Izean type hybrid safety/LB that can run sideline to sideline

His metrics got him rated like the top in the ATH category and a 4star in NJ his senior year.

None of that matters now. Plenty of guys in college with speed. You got to produce and he's down on the depth chart.

These are the top backs that will see snaps:

Campbell
Raymond
Benjamin
Brown (depending on health)

Who is Gabe jumping over to get carries? We also don't even know if he's ahead or behind Ed Guerrier.

If he's playing special teams next year that's a good sign.

Who is the short yardage back to get you the 1st Down ? It was Brown… hopefully he returns. If not maybe Gabe fills that role (?) . Although giving him a look at LB in the Spring sounds interesting.

Maybe but not sure he's built for that role without seeing him run the ball more.

Moving to LB for the spring would be acknowledgement that he's not a RB. Plus look at all the bodies there, 2 starters (Toure, Djabome), 2 experienced backups but both have issues (one injury related, one not reading the plays properly), one redshirt that they are high on (Robinson), multiple highly rated freshman incoming. So he's really got to impress quickly if he spends the spring at LB.

If not, I'd say there's a 60% chance he's in the spring portal.

I’m sure Gabe’s getting stronger and stronger. His vertical was listed at 38” which is insane if true. Listed at 4.48 40.

That's Brian Leonard territory if true. Could there be a 2 back offense as an option?

Don't recall Kirk using a FB at all in his offense on his most recent stops.
