I don't give 1 damn about all the BS of why he can't see the field. We got 1 chance and that is throwing the ball down field to open things up. And he is THE ONLY one who can do that.

He ABSOLUTLEY CANNOT be worse than what we are seeing.

PS...can we not throw a damn screen pass this year?

Sounds good, maybe you can be OC. Oh wait, 1984? Is that when you graduated? You're probably too old then. Have to be under 35.

the line is 28 I think.

and if this scheme is what is required to earn $300-$440k /year being a D1 OC sign me up. Cause it isn't hard to run up the middle on first and 2nd and throw it away on third.

Damn if it's 28 even I'm too old. I wouldn't charge anywhere near that price though. I bet I'd manage to not get any first downs too.

It's sad when your 8 year old could do a better job as OC. "Go out and run whatever plays you want. I'm going to get some ice cream."

Rettig won't help us next year. We need to start grooming the younger QBs. Use this year to get the team reps for next year. This is a throw away year.

I think we can now say that Allen is not the answer. He looked worse than Laviano. Though it can be tough to really evaluate any QB considering the play calling and OL play which might make any QB look bad.

Overall, this seems to be the most conservative, unimaginative, ineffective and boring offense I've ever seen.

Here's the thing guys...

We've seen Laviano pass.

We've seen Zach Allen pass.

We've seen Tylin Oden pass.

We've even seen Gio and Dare pass in scrimmages.

And so far, beyond a shadow of a doubt, Rettig has thrown the best live ball on the team.

Yet because he can't run... he's 5th string?? Come on.

Mehringer preached on and on that he would fit the system to the best passer, and I just don't believe it for one second. He's locked into what he's done in the past, because let's face it - as a 28 year old, he does not have enough experience.

This system only works if the QB is a legit threat to get chunk yardage if he keeps the ball.

AND the QB needs to at least have a D1 arm.

Certainly would also help if the OL could block and the WRs could get open.

The Eagles offense under Chip Kelly's last year looked just as pitiful, QB, line, & receivers.

We plugged in a new QB and got a little more creative on offense and the rest of the squad looks so much better with basically the same pieces one year later.

We don't run screens, pitches, sweeps, outs, drags, curls or slants.
We run read/option with no options

You can add play action to the list. This OC is terrible. I never seen such incompetence in my life. We run read option up the middle where all 11 guys on D know its a play action up the middle. He also loves running rollouts to the left across the body of right hand QB. Just brilliant game planning.

You can add the legend of Hicks too.

Yeah, because our other good RB who is at least as good as Hicks really tore it up yesterday. If only Hicks had played, it might have been a game. Hicks would've been able to evade the DL in the backfield and the other 6 guys near the line who were faster and stronger and more athletic than our guys and who knew we couldn't throw and didn't have guys who could get open. The Hicks mystery, something that if solved would have been the game changer, will no doubt be spread across the news today.

That roll out is just terrible. Its going to be a pick 6 soon.

I don't understand why Rettig is still even here. Maybe he has decided playing football is just not that important anymore. It will be interesting see who starts this week. At some point I assume Ash gives the keys to straight to Oden.

The scariest thing I saw about Mehringer was him talking about Laviano like they are BFF and then Laviano getting the "Little Drew " haircut

Something really bizarre about that whole thing..

Would he have had 2 years eligibility if he transferred b4 season started?

Fully expect Rettig to be gone next year. If he is even a little bit good where ever he goes.........

You realize even internal Republican polling has him down, that he is long almost every swing state, and that only Rasmussen and LA Times have him up since the debate?

Honestly it's sad to watch you guys. Each election you fool yourselves into thinking you can win.

Don't forget the legend of De'Antwan "Rocket" Williams!! I heard that he's still "in the mix."

Regardless of whether Rettig ever plays a down, we need to tailor the scheme to the players, NOT the other way around. I don't care if they draw plays on the ground.

The reason people want to see him is because he can throw. I don't know if he can run, but it's not like the others have had great success.

We've tried to adapt the players; didn't work. Now it's time for Mehringer to adjust.

Telling the players to do something they aren't capable of is crazy. When you are losing to osu Michigan and Washington by a combined 184-13, maybe try something else. Laviano and Allen might be the two worst quarterbacks I've ever seen in my life, and they are 1-2 on the depth chart. Surprised Rettig doesn't know the playbook when you can fit it on one page. The read option won't won't with two slow kids who can't complete a pass

anyone know why Oden was dressed but sat with injuried players not talking to coaching staff?

We ran 1 play option in the very first play and our receiver was wide open and blatantly interfered with and we never ran it again.

This Wall Street Journal essay on Mike Leach, Hal Mumme and The Air Raid offense is a fun read: http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-perfect-pass-s-c-gwynne-1475166931. From the essay:

"Defensive coordinators watching game tape thought that the Mumme-Leach offense had an incredibly complex playbook. In fact, they had only a few plays. What opponents did not understand was that the receivers they saw taking different routes each snap had simply been told to run where they saw open field, like kids playing a pickup game."

Would love to see Rettig playing and allowed to throw the ball. The "our receivers stink" story is way overblown; they may be mediocre but they don't stink. They are totally out-of-the-game, they can't get any "flow" going with QBs who can't throw.

Yup, lets run Harris on a sweep just like the Iowa game on 4th down. When did Sneed, Harris, and Goodwin rushed for 200 yards in a game? But I'm sure they are all at least as good.

The only difference is that Hicks actually produced in real games against real competition. Other than that fact, it's just the same comparison.

Yup, you've pinpointed the difference between this game and the Iowa game. Unless of course you have other ideas what may have been different. What could it have been?

The only difference is that Hicks actually produced in real games . . .
So has Martin. Big time. How'd that work out yesterday? I wonder why he wasn't a big producer yesterday. What could the problem have been? I mean he's produced under the new OC before. What could have been different? I'm stumped. But I'm sure it's something that could easily have been fixed by a fan from the internet saying put this other guy in. That always works.

The difference could've been a 1st down before the half? No one thinks we were going to win but I was expecting a few 1st downs. But I guess that's asking for too much.

I noticed last night a few times guys line up on a WR broke to the LOS immediately on the snap. We have very little threat to pass and apparently no ability to scheme against run blitzing. Some quick slants would have been effective. The play where CL takes the snap in the shotgun, tucks and takes two steps forward, then passes had been effective in earlier games, where has this play gone? The coaching is very poor. I saw CL roll to his left and then throw, incomplete of course. It is a tough play for a qb and I know CL can't do it since last year, but they wasted a play on it. They did at least once again later with CL, incomplete. Then they did it at least twice with Allen, incomplete. Why are the coaches asking our players to do things they clearly cannot? Frustrating as hell. And playing Allen all game after CL? Gio lives on averaging 42 yards per carry and TD each time he runs a play. Why not Rettig at least one series and run pass plays? Why TF not?

So that's what this is about? A few first downs. A small difference that a fan from the internet who sees no practices has determined was important and would have been gained by this other runner and not Martin, who's pretty darn good. OK. This discussion is worth it.
