He's unbelievably talented. He was the best HS player in the country last year as a junior.

Just watched his SLAM 27 minute highlight video on YouTube. I realize it’s highlights, but the kid is definitely impressive and seems to play beyond his years… I wonder if BYU will end up feeling like they got their money’s worth after next season… He’ll definitely increase interest in BYU basketball.

The school will reap the benefits. They will be on national TV all the time.

Its sad because the pay for play is way worse than it used to be when paper bags and envelopes were used. These are college students who are getting a free tuition, room, and board. Coaches are professionals. If you don't see paying a kid $5 million to play BB or FB as a complete and utter degradation of college athletics you are nuts.

This is the way College sports is now
The top talent are paid like pros using NIL deals
But most on the team are amateurs trying to get noticed so they can make a buck or two
by having a good year and getting their own NIL deal from boosters of the team they are playing for or transferring to another program because they can get a NIL deal .

No need to whine, that's the way it is now and the choice is ours to accept what's happening or reject it by replacing college sports with the pro game.

It just the opposite. Professional college football will be THE pro game. NFL will be minuscule in comparison, 32 teams to several hundred college teams with passionate deeply connected fan bases.

Degradation of college athletics?

You mean like:
  • Washington traveling to NJ for a Friday night conference game
  • Rutgers traveling to California for a Friday night conference game
  • Head Coaches making more than their boss (Atheltic Director) and their bosses boss (University President)
  • Head Coaches being the highest paid public employee in the entire state
  • Billion dollar media deals
  • Big Ten stealing 4 teams from the PAC-12 (their closest partner?) and destroying their conference just to make more money
  • Atheltic Departments getting near $100m in conference revenue and still require mandatory "donations" for parking passes (above the actual pass fee)
  • College football teams playing potentially 17 games in a season

What exactly is getting "degraded" by players receiving a raise over tuition, room and board?

no, no - that's different

lets not get carried away that the kids that are getting this money care AT ALL about the tuition, room or board they get

the ones getting this money or anywhere close to it arent going to byu, rutgers or anywhere for the degree

the easiest solution to this is to go back to not requiring the one and done rule and letting kids nba ready go to the nba and be done with it

that would cut down on a lot of this

This was getting close to to happening but was left out of the last NBA collectice bargaining agreement.

The problem is though then Ace/Dylan never happen at Rutgers again and all the accompanying excitement and postseason hopes.
Now you could say "well we already got our Ace/Dylan season. This will never happen again at Rutgers so change the rules now anyway. We won't be missing anything in the future."

I agree but how do you solve football?

With yearly free agency getting to see players develop and graduate is less of a thing. They are professionals now. Professional decisions will be made by both player and program.

The NFL is the best of the best. College football is now like the G league. Basketball is something similar.

No one should be surprised by BYU buying talent. A lot of money flows through there and Mormons love sports.

Let them go straight to the NBA. The whole one and done model is terrible and truly ruins the sport. With the portal now complete free agency it is adding even more of this nonsense.

Heard a recruiting analyst say that the BYU kid would be the first player taken in next years upcoming nba draft if he was eligible.

Oh really? Interesting.
After a little bit of a lull, it seems the next couple of drafts are expected to loaded with high level domestic talent.

Side note - wow is he old. Born Jan 2007.
Only 1 month older than Flagg.
AJ will turn 19 in college before the NBA Draft.

What happened that AJ was originally a Class of 2026 and would be even older in college/NBA?

Yeah, I was sad about that. Two years ago. I’ve accepted that the kids are now professionals. And I also think that it’s just that they’re getting more of a fair cut. once I accept that, then the specific amounts aren’t bothering me.

With the portal it’s a total free for all. Watching Nebraska Indiana last night each roster save 1 or 2 guys was totally redone with guys from all over the place including a guy at Nebraska in yr 6 of college who looks like he’s 30 years old who happens to be their best player. It’s college basketball in name only. Of course this was predictable and I don’t see it changing. I definitely am not as passionate about the sport as I was but the games are entertaining if you like watching good players The talent on all these rosters makes for high level games every night just about.

The connection to the colleges and universities is what is keeping people interested. Otherwise, it’s just like the minor leagues, with a much higher pay scale. It won’t be long until attending classes and getting grades will be optional (some will say it’s here already). Soon it will probably be school “sponsored” sports.” and a means for schools to generate revenue without any connection to academics.

I’m not talking specific players but if anyone thinks a lot of these one-and done players (and others) are attending classes and doing course work, they are completely out of touch. Even if the one-and-dones are abiding by the rules, they would only need to pass the first semester. The don’t need to attend the second semester because the failing grades aren’t received until after the basketball season is over. Remember when “academically ineligible” was a thing? Apparently, UNC was ahead of their time with the fake classes, although now it wouldn’t need to be hidden.

Yes and no. There is a LOT of bad NFL football right now with zero excitement/hope in the fan base (i.e. the Giants). The cream of the crop CFB teams (the top half of SEC, Oregon) is exciting football with energized fanbases, historic rivalries, awesome venues and rosters littered with kids who will be filling out NFL rosters in the coming years.

The rest of CFB is the G league.

College basketball is rough because I have zero clue who is on what team, let alone who’s still eligible

I'm 100% on board with this, it's boring and corny that a situation funnels all the kids to the Top 5 to 7 programs every year.....why is that good for Duke, Kansas or Carolina to get these kids every year and college sports was fine then??

I have not watched 1 BYU game this year and might have watched 1 last year. All I know is they had Kentucky HC Mark Pope there and now BYU, in the Big 12 (playing Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Arizona, Oklahoma State etc gets to see another school with a great player or two, perform on the colllege sports stage.

The perception of college programs is changing away from the blue bloods because of NIL and that is a very good thing for the sport. Does anyone on this message boards want to guess on how little exposure RU has on a National stage?

We are playing a Nationally Televised game today and it will be broadcast in every bar or restaurant around the country, next to the Army Navy game on one channel. This makes it easier for potential of RU to grow organically and become another place where talent lands.

there is no way most of these kids are required to pass anything academically during the season...its all fake at this point. Thats why i say all these contracts should be available for all to see, lets be transparent

College football is nothing like G league. No one cares or follows G league and the money is nothing by comparison. College football enthusiasm and money may even surpass NFL level. It’s already a top tier professional sport. Hundreds of teams with passionate deeply connected fanatical followings, many willing to pay for success on the playing field.

In the future I can see eligibility extended beyond 4 years, what’s so special about 4 years anyway? The average college graduate attends for almost 6 years, and denying more eligibility means denying one’s earning power. Lawsuit’s aplenty.

But what if a players market value far exceeds Tuition, room and board? Would you like it if some monopoly determined the max you could make? The problem is not NIL, portal or player compensation, the issue is the lack of rules governing those and the sport/system, which 100% falls on the arrogance and self interest of the NCAA. Very good news is that there is a framework and solution ahead that will substantially help balance player market value and maintaining the quality of the college game. Luckily there is a smart and thoughtful judge driving a next and important step to this goal. What is also clear is that the way it used to be is both illegal and hypercritical. Be patient and stay tuned.

Why even have students playing at all? If it is all about the money, let them play as pros and spend their time working on their game rather than wasting time going to classes they probably have no interest in anyway. Save the scholarships for real students who deserve the education but cannot afford it. These scholarships could be payed for by the income the school makes on its teams. This way you have teams representing the school but not attending any classes while you have real students attending classes and, hopefully, become solid citizens contributing to our world.

Not a bad suggestion.

If the universities really cared about "student athletes" then they probably wouldn't be having conference games literally across the country during the school week.

But as you correctly point out - they need to get more money. "Student" athletes be damned.

You do realize why the NFL agreed to not have games on Saturday’s during College football season, right? If the NFL wanted they could own Saturdays as well.
