Now THIS is awesome. It goes to show you 2 things. It goes to show you that Hayden Rettig is growing up and maturing and realizing that at Rutgers being the QB isn't just about being able to throw the ball far, but you must be a leader both on and off the field.
From an inside source, back from Rettig was on the scout team I heard that he would go around and tell girls that he should be studying his playbook, but he is down to go take a road trip to a diner or whatever they were doing that night. Overall, the vibe me and my source got was that Hayden just wasn't taking the whole QB situation all that seriously.
And honestly, when he finally got the real 1st team reps I would say that it showed because it seemed like he wasn't that familiar with the playbook, which he could have been if he had his face in the playbook while on the scout team.
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, nobody is perfect and 99% of people including myself, make the mistake when they first go to a new school and worry more about fitting in and "having fun" than studying and working for the future. But the fact that Hayden now it seeing the light IS A BIG DEAL. Because he has the talent to be special already, now he just has to combine the work ethic and mental aspects of the game to his physical talent and he could TRULY BE SPECIAL. A previous article mentioned how when he had gone home to CA before he just wanted to hang out and chill, but that this last time he went home to CA he was all business and he had a totally different demeanor to him. This is a great sign for Hayden and a great sign for Rutgers! Keep it up Hayden!
Oh and the 2nd thing it shows is that Rutgers and the coaching staff truly do take boys and mold them into men. A lot of college and coaches try to say that as a motto, but there is A HUGE DIFFERENCE between just having it as a motto and truly doing it. And based on recent graduates actions to give back to the community such as Sanu and the McCourty twins, Rutgers definitely plays a role in these boy's development into good men.
