Eliminating Kick Offs being discussed.

Eliminating American football being discussed in some circles. So we can do what the rest of the world does: waste time for 2 hours watching 2 teams try to get to an artificial ending of penalty kicks. Why not have 2 hours of penalty kicks? Minimize the injuries. And less acting/faking by the players.

Doesn't this already happen on ice too?

I think we can all agree that anything, within reason, to make a sport safer for the players is a good thing. However, when you decide to totally eliminate one segment entirely, the next step is to then go after another part, etc., etc.
I think you have to decide that if a sport is determined to be too dangerous, you have to look at everything considered a sport and pretty much drop them too. One thing that seems to be continued in baseball other than the pros is the use of aluminum bats. My understanding is that this was done solely for cost cutting since they don't crack like wood. But, hitting the ball with aluminum significantly increases the exit speed on the the ball and also increased potential injuries to those in the way of said balls.
As people have said for years about football, it is a "collision" sport. If you want to eliminate the collisions, you may as well eliminate the game as we know it.

Why not just play flag football or 2 hand touch?? But who would watch or care? Lets just play tackle the sport we all love!!! Boy has our society become feminized when this ridiculous suggestion is offered??

There is no reason you can't make the game safer. They have no choice. Make the game safer or watch make a slow death like boxing which actually use to be a major college sport. More serious injuries occur on kick offs then any other kind of plays. The macho thinking has to stop because when the game started you didn't have 240lb guys covering kick offs. Kick off have a far higher injury rate then any other play due to having 11 guys with 20+ yard running head start.

I seen two proposal. The first is just a modification of the current kickoff. All players will have to remain stationary until the ball is kicked and in addition having only a 5 yard neutral zone.

The other proposal is to make it a punt situation. Instead of onside kicks the team would have to make a first down which would be 20 yards or have the option to punt the ball.

"I don't think there is any doubt it is the most dangerous play in the game."

I don't think it is and I was a wedge breaker in college. . The most injured players by position are WR and OL. For OL getting rolled up on from behind is major problem. For WR its getting blindsided, hit while in air etc.

The injury stats for KOs are inflated by concussions numbers that are subject to criteria that has been watered down. It doesn't take much to qualify as concussed these days.

A better way to reduce injuries would be to reduces substitutions. Too many substitutions allow for larger players who would get gassed normally if they had to play more (most injuries are in 1st quarter when players are fresh). They would also have trouble keeping high weight over a season. Its no accident players got bigger as specialization and strategic subbing got used more.

Part of the attack on football is political. There are groups that hate what football represents for the culture, males etc. Locally I wasn't surprised when one school lost its team when most of the Stepford mommies made their sons quit football - and another team took on girl players (undersized to boot). There's a very weird mindset at play here

If I wanted to watch a bunch of grown men run around for two hours and not score, I would just bring my friends to the bar

Kickoffs don't need to be eliminated, but helmets do. Let's widen the field to the width of a soccer or Canadian Football League. Make defense more about skills and tactics than Reckless tackling.

Kickoffs, for the most part, bore the hell out of me. And more and more I find that the occasional run back isn't enough to compensate for that boredom or the constant stream of blocking penalties. Plus, kickoffs are usually a TV moment for a barrage of commercials--TD, then a bunch of commercials, then back for a 20-second kickoff into the end zone, then another 3 minutes of commercials. It's tedious. So, even without the injury issue, I'd be fine with dumping kickoffs.
