Hey, it's totally subjective but here are my reasons:

1. I love the AD. Hobbs is a pro. His hiring wasn't to promote cronyism or some desire to appear diverse or any other faulty reason. He was selected because it appears that he his an awesome executive. Having some past personal experience dealing with the man, I was both shocked and thrilled when I learned he would be taking ove. His performance thus far validates this.

2. The coaching staff feels right. All of them perfect hires all the way around. Kenny Parker! Mehrenger. Mantz. Henry. Kuhr. Blaze. They all bring something awesome to the table. Ash has a very specific plan and he's good at communicating it. He's a detail freak, which I view as a necessity to achieve greatness. You get the feeling that anything short of a college football takeover will be viewed with disappointment by this group. And I believe them.

3. I'm not alone. HS coaches, newspaper columnists, current players, current recruits...all have taken notice of the positive changes. Some of this I've gotten from reading articles and twitter, other sentiments have been expressed to me directly. The narrative could have easily been "too young, too green, not enough nj" and in the face of these reasonable "cons" the phrase I most often see attributed to the current situation at Rutgers is "home run." Pardon my giddiness, but "home run" is not a phrase I often hear in the same sentence as RU unless the topic is Todd Frazier.

4. There is this growing sense that the era of Rutgers as a whipping boy for the whole country is over. Everything I'm reading is positive about RU. Complimentary. Respectful. Lemming gave us a better recruiting class rating than anyone? This same guy who was perceived as one who would downgrade prospects after committing to RU is the one giving our class the most positive treatment.

The winds are at our backs right now for the first time that I can remember. Even when Schiano was doing good things here, there was always this air of negativity and adversity hanging over our heads. I can't sense that at all right now. I know this is a highly subjective opinion and there is very little concrete evidence to convince any naysayers but I'm curious - does anyone else feels it too?

A new day has dawned, and it's like Christmas morning--I am brimming with excitement and anticipation for next season.

For some, however, the sun is too bright, it will cause skin cancer, and the only thing they can think of on Christmas morning is:

We make it out of this upcoming season a live and all we can go is up i believe.

I have been around for a while I remember Rockafeller, our last decent AD, to Twitchell, Fred and up to Herman.
I actually felt Hermann was an upgrade (until she opened her mouth in public) But she knew her shit as an AD.
I will not comment on our new AD, but I will say his choice for HC of football is a solid smart choice, a bit outside of the expected box which I find refreshing. A move away from the typical nepotism that runs thru this place. So it was great no schiano no golden, no weis, or any other connected to NJ name.
As for Coach Ash, people, he is a new born schiano without the ego and pedantic attitude. Is he a home run? TBD but anyone throwing stone at this Early point are not vested RU people but are anti-Rutgers folks; be they trolls, old opponents (sadexcuse, ucan't, pitts, etc) or ledger scum. Or some really ugly human beings who just hate the world and their own lot in life. You all know who I am talking about. I have seen these people for ~16 years putting down the Schiano hire and after ~2006 bitching Schaino not doing better, than to why Flood and now Ash can't recruit??? Yes all jersey people are opinionated but some just have a poisoned soul and find this board a way bring others down to their loathing view of life.
But on to Ash and company here is a confession I kept quite for a long time
As a Line coach Flood SUCKED, Yes I know he proceeded over the Sosa, Zuttah, & guys and they were great.
But all the fundamental work was done by the previous 2 years of coaching. When 4 years of flood linemen started playing, they all stood up on the snap; I would scream. At least Mitch Browning coached them to stay low and fire out, so yes he was an improvement. But I expect a major improvement with Blazek. This is where the game will be won or lost especially in the spread. this where brains can be more important the brawn.
So with all new dawns come optimism, for Rutgers we should all be happy that the sun rose!
Yes in total I feel great as for the direction of RU FB.

No reason whatsoever to not be positive. I just hope that everything you mention, which is 100% true, will translate to wins, better classes and more wins!

I don't expect everything to change overnight or even in one year but in 3-4 years, hopefully he will deserve a big raise!

Upstream Red Team!

I want to see a bunch of wins next year, but even more than that...I want to see a team that is fired up all year. Because that will tell me more than anything else that I'm right about what I'm sensing, and that means the greatness I expect is coming. Wins and loss totals often vary dramatically based on one bounce here, or a flag there. Do the players look like complete maniacs out there? I'll take a couple tough luck losses if the answer to that question is 'yes.'

Can you pass what you guys are smokin? I want to believe like that too.

You, and maybe 7-10 others here on the boards, are way too concerned about a class that Ash had little-to-no chance with due to a slew of reasons. Move beyond this class (which Lemming has at 59th and, average-star wise on Rivals, comes in at 61...but was 52nd before the guy even got the job...). Pay attention to what other coaches are saying, both college and NJ high school, and see how recruiting goes from here on out.

I would describe my view of the situation as happily, but cautiously optimistic.

I think a lot of the right puzzle pieces are in place. I like what Ash brings to the table. I like what Mehringer brings to the table. I have no reason not to think that the rest are anything other than an upgrade over what we had the past few years (although Fridge was right up there too). And they may turn out to be more than just an upgrade.

But I'm also not prone to needing to believe in a thing. I'm not belief driven. I'm more logic driven, more existential. So I can't say I'm feeling great either. I'll need to observe on-field improvement over time to feel great. For now, I'm just feeling optimistic.

What I don't get about some of our fellow board members that get so negative is, what's the point of it? Does being negative actually make people feel good? It never makes me happy to be negative. Realistic is good. But entirely negative and whiny and bitchy? How is that a good way to live?

I am all for a little optimism, I don't mind tough questions, but enough of the whining about the transitional un-controllables. Everything will not be righted in the first 60 days, but I certainly like the work ethic and a fresh approach based on what it took to win with a top 10 team.

It's way too early to tell, but some positive indicators: Hobbs looks the part of a competent and professional AD, and the new coaching staff seems like a radical change from the previous regime (which I feel was necessary).

Regarding Hobbs, he is going to be put to the test right away finding a way to get $ for facilities and figuring out how to handle Eddie Jordan's contract.

All I want to see next year is the team playing better at the end of the year then at the beginning. That to me will say a lot.
Agreed. And continued improvement the following year.

I actually think the sign that we've evolved as a program will be when we can maintain the level of goodness on the field even after we graduate a bunch of good players. When we continue to reload and not just rebuild periodically.

But not a ton of teams get to that point. So it could be unrealistic to expect.

You have to see 2-3 real games before you can get negative. I guess they want Flood to still be coach.

I think different people must have different reasons to be negative. But even if the season is clearly going to be a long, painful haul, I'm not going to get negative unless I can't perceive any improvement at all, which seems unlikely. Maybe not even then since there's going to be a lot of new learning going on this season - and that usually takes some time.

lets give it 5 to 7 years . You are right need to sustain things but time will be needed. Be patient and enjoy the rebuilding of a lot of things.

We won't need 5-7 years to see which way this program is trending.I know we have a young coach, with a young staff. They will make some mistakes, but for me and the fans I talk to ,things are really looking up.We are all in. I know only time will tell.

no one ever said we will need 5 to 7 years to see which way the program is going . We will know that every step of the way as we see progress. What we are saying is give it time for everything to come together where we can win consistently and get a great rep with recruits year after year.

I am beyond all in!!!

I just am worried that the expectations for turnaround may be too high.and people will not be patient. There was there straight subpar classes ...and cosching can help but that will only go so far. There may be losing Seasons in two of the first three years

Im all in...but jus don't indite the guy if we have a couple of 4-8 records early on

Pay are toon to the recruiting , the improvement in X's and O's, and how players get better from year to year. If those are a thumbs up, then it's a matter of when and not if...

I think it will be a matter of when

It's all good until we play a a game . Then we see
That's just it. We almost certainly will NOT see much when we play just one game. Or three even.

The rest of this isn't aimed at you Plum Street. Just venting a bit about this board in general.

I think that if someone really wants to form a reasonably objective opinion on the team's progress, they should DVR the first couple games and then, around the sixth or seventh game, DVR another couple games and then re-watch them all a few times studying all the position groups individually. That's probably the very least that could help someone form a half accurate conclusion.

Just looking at scores won't do it. Other teams could have good or bad games. Outlier performances need to be smoothed. Etc.

One thing I've noticed a lot here is that people tend to amplify things (both the positives and negatives) through a lot of confirmation bias based observations and arguments. I really like posts that bring in stats for that reason. Stats can lie too, but at least there's some objective measuring stick w/them. But they have to be stats that look at half seasons (at least) or whole seasons so that some degree of smoothing takes place; so that exceptional performances (good or bad) are de-prioritized.

That's the key. When casually watching games, we all prioritize exceptional play (good or bad). It's human nature. It's what catches our attention and it's what we remember. But that exceptional stuff is exactly what we should de-prioritize if we want an accurate idea of the team's progress.

People who watch a game and see some good things and declare us much better are high. People who watch a game and see us get spanked on the scoreboard and declare us hopeless are high. Being high is fine and all, but it doesn't lend itself to an accurate understanding of the progress of the team over the course of a season.

When the exceptionally good becomes mundane, then we have a championship team.
