Flood may stay but...

I've said it before his resume 2 years DC Maine(Defenses nothing special), 1 year special teams coach RU. This does not scream P5 coordinator. It was a desperation hire by Flood once Smith decided on Arkansas. Because he has limited contacts in the profession to go to. Rossi is still learning and at a P5 school that's not going to cut it. As you will be constantly out schemed and out coached which has happened for two years running. At this level those skills should already be acquired. Now couple this with the situation we are in and the results are predictable. Our DC and DB's coach are not doing these kids any favors. Rutgers needs to open up the purse strings and find a qualified DC. We found one on offense now we need to do the same on defense. Then this program can start to take off.

Like many people couldn't wait until the game was over before they went off on Rossi, Laviano, KFED, Flood, or whomever....I will wait until the season end to make any assessments of any coach or players.

Not being near a TV for the game....my only resource to the game was the game threads here.....it was just hilarious...reading about this guys sux, that guy sux...oh shit we won....was priceless!!!

As long as Rossi holds the opponent to one less than our opponent, it...

So, if Rossi holds the opponent to say, 17, then he must hold the opponent to 16.. and if 16, then 15.. onto ZERO.

Yes. That's fair, if Rossi pitches shutouts we are golden!

The DC has had some good moments but has also failed miserably. I am not certain it is the DC's fault. I would tend to think I see broken coverage and people blitzing or getting stuck in "no mans land" based on poor reads of the situation. While that is also a coaching or recruiting or is due to losses of personnel due to poor discipline, it is largely player error.. I suspect.

On the OC side it is worse. Yes, we can all point to the OC stuff that works and say he's doing a great job. But how about doing a great job BEFORE we desperately need a great job done? I do not know who is to blame for the overly conservative rut we fall into with running the ball.. you know what..

I will make a thread about 1st down plays in the Indiana game.

I feel like an undergrad again watching Graber's old teams...

"Hey Coach Floo, where's the D?"

Get it right. You're talking about his last 2 teams where most of his players were hurt for most of the season. Graber's '91 and '92 teams were much better defensively.

Fair point... I started as an undergrad in 94' and always identified the Graber teams as all O', no D'.

Regardless, I always enjoyed the "Hey Oug, where's the D?" line.

Here is an outline of our defensive stats from 2008-2015... You be the judge...

As a former DB I love this group, but I can't watch a coach like Wilson get away with without performing his duties. Natural ability and desire will only take you so far. The coaches have to do their share of the heavy lifting. Btw Al, Colorado didn't shy away from giving the entire playbook because it was given to me the summer before my arrival and I was expect to be familiar with it if I expected to play for them. If you baby someone, then don't expect them to be anything other than a baby.

I understand what you're saying, but at the same time, I think you're being unduly harsh on the group, and not acknowledging the challenges of inexperience that they face. I'm also just not seeing that this group isn't being coached properly. There is dramatic improvement between what we saw against Washington State and Indiana, in that no one is running free anymore. Cioffi is much better than he was two years ago. Is there room for improvement? Of course there is, but its a process.

Luke Falk, Connor Cook and Nate Sudfeld have NFL prospects. It was one thing if these guys did well against us, and struggled against everyone else, but the fact is, that they are productive against everyone they face. Luke Falk is the #2 passer in the country for a reason.

In any case, none of our remaining opponents have prolific passing attacks, but they may run the ball down our throat.

Lets revisit this at season end.

why does it seem like many criticized Schiano whenever he mentioned we had a young team, but that term is thrown around like crazy these days?

You're going to have a young team more times than not imo. That shouldn't be your excuse. You're likely facing many opponents with guys just as young.

LOL....This coming from person who lauded the competition those year...claiming we would be winning National Championships... These are the facts... I am not "comparing" anything...interpret these facts anyway you want, but our defense has been absolute shit the past couple of years and I do not foresee it getting better with Rossi....

The Big Ten produced more NFL draft picks than the Big East. Thats a fact which makes the comparison invalid.

I am not going to sit here and argue with you. You obviously are set in your thinking. You are a very glass half full guy....we all know that...I am one as well....But we will NEVER win a National Championship, let alone win the conference, let alone win the division, let alone finish in the TOP HALF of the division with this defense....and that is just DEFENSE...we will never do those things with this entire current coaching staff... I am sorry to break it to you, but that is a fact...This division is very competitive and its probably going to get even more competitive in the very near future. Changes need to be made to do any one of those things and a very good area to start is defense. And about me "comparing stats from a minor league to stats in a major league"....I think its time we hire a major league coaching staff instead of the minor league one we have, don't you think? Flood (and co.) is someone we would have hired BEFORE Schiano...not after

This D is bad - BAD - period. Yes, we suffered some unexpected losses - WE ALL KNOW THIS - but that doesn't change the fact that this D is bad and it could get worse - based on not only offenses we play, but the 3 Top 11 D's we play, as well, which could further hurt our D's due to a lack of offensive production - from here on out .

Nuts...its too late, the mantra is already set in stone now with the excuse of young and what did you expect. That its the same excuse for 3 years in a row doesn't matter, don't pay attention to that.

We ARE young. That isn't an excuse. It's fact. All the DBs on our THREE deep are freshmen apart from 2 (Cioffi and some other guy). It is what it is. We had a shot at a pretty good secondary coming in before they all decided to go play for the Mean Machine. Couple that with the fact that we don't have top 25 talent across the board like a lot of the teams we play in the big ten east makes our margin off error small.

What we are missing on defense is turnovers. Looking back at the Schiano years that is what stood out. Team is doing better at takeaways as season moves forward. Lets hope for alot against Ohio St.

Rossi needs to go. I don't want to hear anything about the freshmen DB's. The technique and defensive scheme is just awful. Time to bring in a D coordinator with some gusto.

On the other side of the ball, does anyone miss Fridge? I don't because McDaniel has been excellent.
You are clueless.

AGREED!

That's what stood out vs Indiana. TWO INTs against a good QB. It has been a LONG time since that has happened (probably 2012), It's GREAT to see!

The losses we faced due to the arrests are too significant for a Rutgers program. We don't have the necessary depth to adjust quickly. However, I will say this if we remain patient and allow the secondary to mature Rossi will improve this defense this year and next. But if recruiting does not improve it will not matter who we hire as defensive coordinator. We really need to improve on the recruiting front!!.
