Will this be the shortest recap this year..yup. Not much to say. Bac has just been beaten down with the losing and failure of the season as a whole. Team overmatched right on down the line without a healthy Dylan. Despite RU playing it close in the first half and being down only 47-43 in the 2nd half before the bottom dropped out and despite a fantastic individual shooting effort by Jordan Dercack was never really a threat to win this game. Michigan State played a D level game and did just enough at times to build a cushion as Izzo pulled from this deep bench to wear Rutgers down. I felt like this was a game from the 90s under Wenzel or Bannon when RU would hang around and play a spirited effort by a top 25 Big East program but never getting over the hump. This time I knew not to get sucked in early and had no confidence Rutgers was even capable of making a legitimate push to do what they would need to do to winthis game. In the first half, Rutgers somehow played a C level game yet only down 3 at half. I am sure Izzo wasnt pleased. I will give RU alot of credit. They played pretty good D in the 1st clogging up the paint and forcing MSU into take a lot of outside shots and they are not a good outside shooting team. I thought MSU fell into the trap too easy and it wasnt until a few minutes into the 2nd half where they became a bit more patient with their offense.

Jordan Dercack went from DNP to team leader and sharpshooter tonight. He solely brought RU back into the game in the first half with a couple of finishing with 11 in the 1st half and the only player to step up for an ineffective and hobbled Harper. Jordan would go quiet for a bit but was instrumental in at least making Sparty work for it late, putting up 12 points in the final 3 minutes. Big props to him for being next man up with Dylan out. 7-11 fg, 26 points, 8-9ft, 4 boards and 2 steals, game of his life, Jordan was arguably the best player on the court tonight on either teams. Amazing case of resilience by a player that took a lot of heat on these boards and even fell out of favor with Coach Pikiell. With Harper likely to still be dogged by his ankle injury, JD will get more minutes going forward and while no one can expect anything close to what he gave tonight. He was the one true positive in a day full of misfortune.

For starters, I hate giving up a home conference game. Rutgers should not do it. To me its distracting at this point in the season. The showing of 17K is fantastic. Alot of people at the game who do not normally get to the RAC ever got a chance for a day out. Just do it in December in a non conference game. For die hards and those who live by wins and losses as a barometer, it was not all that fun. Alot of gloss for a program that still hasnt been able to walk the walk yet. And I said this after the win over Michigan State 2 years ago, so I am consistent here. I know some vehemently disagree with me but I am not changing my opinion here...and no RU probably does not win this game at the RAC but "for me" the experience and atmosphere would have been better. I get for many who attended today they would disagree.

Dylan Harper should not be playing if not 100% or even 75%. 6 points, 2-4 fg, 2-4 ft in 13 minutes. Knew trouble was ahead when he did not start but quickly got removed after starting the 2nd half never to return. He was below 50% and this was the 2nd time this year this happened (Wisconsin game). He shouldnt be travelling to Northwestern like he did vs Indiana if he is in fragile game time decision shape. He tried gutting it out but I am not questioning his desire. Its whether he helps or hurts team. It was obvious he was struggling mightily. It alters the whole RU strategy to be playing 5 on 4 and makes defending RU much easier. Harper may want to be out there but Pike is the coach and he needs to make the call here and not Dylan. Its some really bad luck that such a talented kid is going through two ridiculous stretches of the season where he cannot get on the court. Need to do this right and get him 100% if RU wants to salvage the season later in the year.

As for the game, as a I said I never got the feeling RU could win here and eventually Izzo would lay the knockout blow. If you want to name a big turning point of the game, it likely would be the missed J Will ridiculously attempted dipsy do which resulted in a transition wide open corner 3 by Akens. MSU would add another basket to go up 54-44 and Pike was forced to call timeout. Rutgers lost touch and eventually got down by 13 and while they did chip away late, Michigan State still had enough safe cushion throughout despite some late Rutgers shooting herorics from JD and Dylan Grant who tossed in 2 late. Credit Rutgers because they could have tossed in the towel and lost by 20. The peformance was not great overall by most but no one could question the effort. They played hard and they wanted to win, the reality is they just are not very good collectively. Ace had an off night shooting 4-17 fg 8-8 at the line, 9 boards on a night Rutgers would need him to repeat his Penn State performance. Dylan Grant did show some late pulse with 9 points but for much of the game was not a factor. Lathan struggled to get anything going and inexplicably taking two 3 point shots. J Will biggest disappointment of the season with a measly 4 points on 2-5 fg shooting and 4 boards. Acuff hit a 3 early and then went into witness protection. Martini was abysmal missing all 5 of his 3s. JMike and PJ gave nothing. Dortsch redshirt burned 20 games into the season for 3 minutes makes my head spin.

Was today as bad as it could have been given the circumstances of no EO and basically no Dylan? Nope. RU was lucky a bit that Michigan State really was not on their game. 15 turnovers many of them unforced had to drive Izzo up the wall. Akens shooting a hideous 3-15 including just 1-10 in the first half. Shocked that 50 of MSU's 81 points came from off the bench. Izzo had to work to make some adjustments in the 2nd half to fend off a feisty RU effort. What I am impressed by Michigan State is their depth. Izzo has a lot of tools in the toolbox and that is what they may be a tough out in the NCAA tourney. For Rutgers to lose by 7 on national tv CBS to the #8 team is not the worst thing in the world. The effort was certainly far better than losses to Purdue, Ohio State and Kennessaw State. 10-10 I hope some finally give up their hopes of this team going on a run. Its not happening with a hurt Dylan and its beyond too late to happen with a healty Dylan. Where that leaves how Rutgers fans should approach the next 11 games I cannot say it. For me apathy is setting in a bit but I have accepted the programs fate a few weeks ago but for other they still may be in a denial, bargainning or anger stage. Today was nothing to be ashamed of but it really is no longer about one particular game. This is about the season. How can it not be? Its a sad sad situation and its gettin more and more absurd.

Why should Dylan not take a flight to Chicago with a bum ankle? I get the argument when he had the flu but an ankle? Makes no sense.

We are not good enough to miss 11 in a row and overcome the hole we put ourselves in.

Wouldn't it be nice to see Hayes actually get a shot.

When Harper wasn't starting I expected a 20 point loss

Bac - Love your recaps. I typically don't respond because usually by the time I read them it, there are so many responses. There are a couple of things that I want to respond to:

1. Shortest recap? Not so sure about that.
2. Agree with the D in the first half. It was pretty solid.
3. Agree with your take on Derkack. He took a few ill-advised threes but they went in. Incredible resilience by the man. From several DNPs to the game of his life on the biggest stage. I always thought he belongs on this level, regardless of what others say. He just needs to play his game, and not the game that he thinks he can be (cross court passes, circus layups, etc.). And props to him at the line today. He is a heady basketball player that can really be an asset to the team.
4. I don't necessarily disagree about giving up the home court, but when RU went on that 10-0 run, that is an unmatchable home court advantage. 14,000 Rutgers fans were rocking out. Of course, MSU immediately went on a 16-1 run that quieted the crowd, but that surely would've quieted the RAC crowd as well. But if RU can negate that run, this is an unreal environment where RU could have an even bigger advantage than at the RAC.
5. Agree 100% on Harper. If he can't give full effort, then he cannot play. I understand why people say that a 70% Harper is better than a fully healthy (name your player). But that's just not true. Did he have another 3-point attempt blocked today? It wound up being a shot clock violation, but I think it was blocked based on the lack of spin as it was in the air. He just does not have the strength in the ankle. I noticed late in the game during a timeout where he was severely limping. If he can't give it all, then he just shouldn't play.
6. I agree with the turning point up and under layup attempt by Williams. It was off by a full 2 1/2 feet. I actually like Williams, but he is just not playing within himself. I think we got lured into his first few games back last year expecting him to be more of the same.
7. Sommerville basically has not made a basket outside of five feet over the past 12 games. That's on the coaches. They need to drum it in his head that he cannot take them. Period.
8. Way too many no shows - Williams, MARTINI (my goodness), Davis, Hayes, and Dortch (more to come on him). That's five players for a combined 6 points? How many minutes? Close to 40? I haven't checked the box score.
9. Dortch - I'm not upset that he played today. I'm upset as to how he was used. Literally zero minutes for the first 18 games and then roll him out for 3 minutes on the biggest stage you can imagine!! With the transfer portal being what it is, how can a coach actually redshirt a healthy player? Get the kid some run. He couldn't have been worse than Martini!
10. Not a bad result against a likely Sweet 16 team. However, can RU just put together one solid game? This was a game that could have been had, but you cannot shoot 34% and beat a Top 10 team. It's basically impossible.
11. Additional thought - Nice job by Bailey at the line. Clearly he has made some sort of adjustment and is quickly becoming one of the best free throw shooters on the team.

Anyway, Bac, great job on your recaps. Always look forward to them and I enjoy the straight-shooter approach to your posts.

Harper's health is far more important than sitting on the bench in Chicago.Stay home and get more rehab at the practice facility.Hopefully, he will be ready for the February 1 game at the RAC against Michigan. The problem isn't only the ankle sprain but Harper also must get back the stamina and quickness necessary to perform at a high level.

Agree with you on BACs recaps and on 9! Was also thinking 11, kudos. Just wish the team was better and the program wasn’t descending.

We go up 10-3 and the RAC is unbelievable.
Mistake from the very beginning playing this game at the Garden.
Ace goes 4-17, Dylan plays 14 minutes and we still only lose by 7. Should have been at the RAC!
That’s all that needs to be said.

We re 12-25 in conference play since beating Sparty at MSG 2 years ago.

Nice to see Dercack play well. He’s not the most talented kid but he plays his ass off.

It’s tough on the eyes watching Acuff / JMike / JWill / Martini.

Shame about Dylan. Hope injury doesn’t linger like when Geo has similar injury

Path to Big 10 Tourney becomes more difficult with each loss.

Bottom feeders like USC and Minnesota continue to improve

if you are going to play a game away from tge RAC at least have 1 3 point line. We had guys chuck shots from 6 feet behind the NCAA line.

@ BAC - I hear you on MSG home games, but I’m not sure it’s as simple as just penciling in a random non-conference game there against the kind of team we’d want to face (maybe it is - but if so, you’d think there’d be a lot more games regularly scheduled there, no? Lots of teams want to play there). If it turned out it’s 2 for 1 where we give up a home game twice every 3 years and get a road league game at MSG in the off year (which is what it was - Michigan played us in a home game there), that seems like an okay deal. Getting to call a game played there a true road game once every 3 years would be a big deal if it works out that way.

More than the MSG league, I hope we can put an end to playing random one off road and neutral games against mid-majors period - at MSG or anywhere. If Pike wants to play teams like that he needs to enter a lower tier tournament bracket instead. I just think in a tournament it’s a lot easier to get your kids pumped up to try to win a trophy than it is to make the trip to Fordham after a night out over school break. We need to be smarter with non-conference scheduling. I definitely do not want to go to MSG to play Temple. In that case I’d rather give up the home game.

We are only playing to stay out of the bottom 3 in the conference at this point and then to die a quick and hopefully painless death in the conference tournament. Wish this season was already recorded on a DVR and I could just hit the fast forward button now to the last 4 minutes of our last regular season game against Minnesota to see if we even made the conference tournament. Also pretty pathetic that Rutgers and Minnesota could be battling to remain out of the bottom 3 in the conference in that last game of the season.

Derkack played great.

Harper needs to rest until he is 100%.

With 11 games left it would be nice to win 8 of 11 and sneak into the B10 Tournament.

It seems impossible but with better coaching and some luck anything is possible.
