Game 5: Rutgers Women's Hoops at LSU / Sunday

1) Our half court offense looks like it does every other year. We started scoring when we started running.
2) Our defensive rebounding was terrible, how many 2nd/3rd chances did LSU get?
3) I believe we had 23 turnovers.

You can't win committing 23 (or so) turnovers and getting killed on the boards

Can’t remember the last time I saw such horrible clock management at the end. Too aggressive on D in the 1st half. Way too many turnovers and offensive rebounds allowed. Basketball IQ very poor.

Early first quarter foul calls killed us, some of which were ticky-tac.
Not being able to protect the glass and them getting second and third chances also could be cited as the difference. Of course, if our starting center wasn't on the bench because of those early calls maybe we rebound better. But the awful open floor turnovers hurt even more-light pressure and we threw it away twice, and the travel...ugh... There is a lot to clean up. And the lack of three point attempts...since we don't get the ball down low there is no opportunity to kick it back out where the shooters are already facing the basket and have sized up the distance. Still spend too much time throwing it around the perimeter.

I don't watch a lot of women's basketball, because the officiating makes me nauseous. This game was no different. Watched it on delay then fast forwarded through a lot of the back half of the 2nd quarter through the first half of the 4th rather than watch officials butcher the game.

Saw we were back in it and watched the second half of the 4th... and boy did we look bad at times. Choppy flow, bad clock management, sloppy. I don't know if it was all the fouls in the first half that threw everyone off their rhythm, but even with the wild FT disparity we had every opportunity to take control late and didn't.

Saw a couple of comments up above about how great the SEC Network broadcast was. Really? Camera on the bench side, so you couldn't see the coaches or scorers table... couldn't see the near sideline at all... no shot clock visible on the screen... scores were at the bottom in the middle instead of up top, which allowed them to be obstructed by the DVR onscreen popup... ick.

Just looked at the boxscore. Shooting was fine except for threes, and really only two players underperformed with regard to percentages; unfortunately they played the most minutes. I'm going with rust on that one. TOs and fouls hurt. I don't know if that was the story in the 2Q.

I was not sure how this game would go, and there was a big spread among the rating services--from an 8-pt loss to an 8-pt win. I don't begrudge LSU the win. Could be a good lesson in making adjustments for the Scarlet Knights.

I noticed the lack of shot clock, I don't know why. Score placement however was standard for all ESPN games (SEC Network is an ESPN station). I don't think they control which side of the court the camera is on.

Now - what some folks liked - the announcing. Paul Sunderland (this was discussed on the UConn board that I read, as well) is just easy to listen to. Although his "sport" is volleyball, I think he can be too pedantic on Volleyball telecasts. His tone on WBB is quite good and fascinating to hear about Thanksgiving at Shaq's house (and not have the story displace the game, like stories so often do with other announcers). He is very good.

My observations are generally in line, but I'll make them -

1 - The fouls killed us and we got into a hole that we didn't get out of. Yes, the officials were not really good, but in general, we really did commit the vast majority of the fouls. But it took us completely out of rhythm and our best players ended up not playing as much as they normally would.

2 - The defensive rebounding was awful. No other word for it. The turnovers didn't disturb me as much, as they are partly a product of the foul trouble.

3 - The end of the game management was just awful.

4 - Either LSU is better than prognosticators think, or we "laid an egg". And we still almost did it.

5 - Since I don't expect to see many games, glad this one was on and I saw many signs that they are a good team. But not playing very well. Maybe spoiled by all the easy wins?

The coach did not prepare them adequately for a game on the road in a hostile environment.

LSU is a mediocre team that had the advantage of the home court and refs calling fouls against Rutgers early in the game that put Mack and Wallace on the bench for most of the first half.Rutgers had a bad game with turnovers, allowing offensive rebounds for baskets and a long scoring drought in the second quarter. This was a bad loss because Rutgers has better talent but road games continue to be a nemesis for most Rutgers teams.Coaching in this game was less than stellar.

To your first point, I have never liked that logic. Yes, I'd say about 80% of the calls I saw that went against us in the first 1.5 quarters were legit... but officiating isn't about every call against your team being right/wrong - it's about whether the game is consistently officiated. Almost any defense played inside was whistled against us, but our players were banged up whenever they went to the hoop with few calls - LSU's defenders were hardly shrinking violets. If they call 100% of the fouls we commit and 50% of the fouls the other team commits, the "but we really did foul there" rationalization falls flat to me.

To your third point, I agree. No idea what we were doing out there - not fouling, not pushing for a shot at the end, not boxing out for boards, not protecting the ball. For as good as they were looking in the 3rd quarter pulling the game back with the starters, the last 3 min or so were a combination of bad execution and bad coaching. Felt like there was little awareness about the situation.

This game showed that while our starters are strong, our depth isn't there. In the second quarter with Mack out with fouls and Guirantes out with injury, we looked lost. When our bigs got in foul trouble, our offense really struggled.

Hopefully this game was a hiccup and lets Stringer get their attention better in practice.

My concerns is that our wings have no motions. They don't cut through the key to run plays to get open. The last three mins they were just standing in one spot waiting for a pass with a guard between them and the ball. And, why were we not in a zone the whole half?

A lot of teaching moments from this game. Right now we only have 2 consistent scorers - Mack and Arella, one true PG - KK (I feel Zippy still working her way back) and one real post - Wallace . If anyone of them goes out of the game against P5 competition, the flow is going to suffer on both ends and yesterday proved it. You don’t have to guard Giles and they weren’t setting screens for Noga. I’d like to see more of Maddox, less of Singleton. Davenport got lots of minutes - she is not as ready as I hoped - needs to learn the plays, gain confidence and be stronger with the ball. She’s a big girl and got pushed around too easily against LSU.

The good news, Zippy will round back into form (she has a sweet midrange shot), the freshmen will improve and we get the Baylor transfer in late Dec who is a proven PG and scoring threat.

Answer - Coaching.

3) I believe we had 23 turnovers.

How many games have you watched besides the LSU game?
