To be honest coming into the game I didnt think that RU had the horses to beat MSU as I didnt think our talent has grown up enough to be able to win a game like this. As I said before, RU just is not a complete team at this juncture. Its not NCAA team. It can play in flashes and spurts. What you saw at Miami and saw at times tonight was what Rutgers could become when the team is fully developed. Michigan State is a fully developed team. Izzo just reloaded once again. Tonight was not so much what Rutgers did or did not do, its that Sparty is good..very very good. Add to the fact that they have Tom Izzo on the sideline and its hard to come away with any real sense of disappointment tonight. I think tonight was more encouraging piggybacking off the Miami win.

Juxtapose this game with the St John's game and mind you that MSU is several rungs ahead of St John's in talent and coaching. For that game RU was overjuiced, overhyped, could not settle and try to do too much. In that game, it was the emotion that torpedoed them from the start. In this game two weeks later, you saw the emotion in check because the team was confident not cocky. RU played that first half like they belonged. Toe to toe outplaying MSU at times. I know everyone wants to measure wins and losses and look ahead and have this team competing for post season play but this year is about progression and developing. To me that is what we have seen ALOT of the past two weeks. We are seeing players grow in confidence. We are seeing the coaching staff trusting and asking more of the bench. Make no mistake about it, RU isnt as talented as MSU but we are closing the gap. This program belongs in the Big 10 and not just as a running joke for last place. Michigan State had to battle for this one. They played well, this wasnt a D or even B- effort. Yet RU still is not in position to win a game like this but we can take a ton of encouraging positives.

Caleb McConnell....what as an unexpected surprise. Came up big in the first half when he answered the call when Geo had to go out with 2 fouls. For sure I thought Pike was going to bring back Geo pretty quickly but Caleb played so well, that he played out the rest of the half. Caleb hit a 3, made an agressive successful drive to the hoop. He pretty much played mistake free ball save for that ill fated possession at 51-44 that led to a bad turnover and MSU layup. RU does not need him to be even a 10 minute game. They just need him to spell Geo from time to time here and there. I think Caleb grew up alot tonight. Part of the growing is playing fearless, he did. It doesnt mean we have a backup that can be Geo but it means Caleb can grow into someone servicable as the season goes on. To add to the fearless comment. I think Johnson, Harper, and Mathis all showed that they belonged out there. While they played like freshmen at times, they were not afraid to play. Harper seemed to struggle the most out there but that will happen with matchups like this. Johnson made some really nice shots and Mathis was aggressive, got to the line and made 5 of 6.,,big time improvement from him there. Peter Kiss seemingly as refuted any of the concerns about him from his earlier lull with his play the last two games. While his shot wasnt on in the 2nd half save for that 3, I thought his shots and confidence in the first half was exactly what RU needs from him. Teamwise the defense was very good in the first half...good at times in the 2nd, but seemed to be worn down in spots. But once again you can see the progression from earlier in the year, these are better defensive efforts than say vs Drexel or St johns

Eugene...another warrior effort, sometimes caught trying to do too much but that is Eugene..another monster stat line 16 points and 11 boards. It hurt when he was out the last 6 minutes of the first half and that is Eugene because it was a frustration foul but you can tell he cares so much and wants to carry this team. Geo came out strong but that 2nd foul and tougher defense on him in the 2nd half really did him in. Issa was quiet for sure tonight except for that one 3 that cut it to 6. Need more out of him in a game like this

As for the game itself, RU was shooting lights out early. Kiss raining 3s, Geo was on but too many fouls forced Geo and later Eugene to the bench and that really hurt RU's momentum. I will praise what the freshmen did in their minutes because they were only down 2 at half but I think those fouls were one several key plays that swung the game in one direction. Another key stretch was of course the dreaded first 5 minutes of the 2nd half which usually sets the tone. Izzo had his team going inside and Ward abused Doorson and then Sparty would proceed to a 12-1 run over the course of 6 minutes and MSU held RU to just 4 points and one basket in a 9 minute stretch. That folks is where the game was won. Actually it was won in the Michigan State lockerroom courtesy of Tom Izzo. 2nd half for MSU was all about defense,...half court defense, the game slowed to a crawl and surprisingly it was Sparty that benefitted from the slower pace that they were dictating. RU struggled mightily with shot selections and Geo/Eugene were just shut down. Looked as if MSU would win in a blowout at 59-46 but RU got helped out by a 6 point stretch led by a flagrant one on MSU....RU was in striking range and then got as close as 63-57 as once one shot went in, it seemed like they found their rhythm again but alas the final dagger seemed to be an odd foul called on Eugene that put MSU on the line rather than RU with the ball down two possession. Once that happened it seemed like RU had nothing left to give and MSU was composed and workman like the rest of the way.

So another learning experirence in a season full of them. We know what the team can be but we also know the flaws and things they must work on. I think the losses are going to be huge teaching tools for Pikiell this year even moreso than the wins. On to Wisconsin who are brimming with confidence after winning at Iowa. Tough matchup to win there, RU certainly has a punchers chance but going to need the shots to really be on.

Some additional points:

- Courtney Green (ref) is a POS who has it in for us every game. His ratio of calls in favor of MSU was about 12:2. Kid you not. Tapes of his officiating should be sent to the Big 10 office for review. Every game he does is so blatantly against us.

- 30 Minutes before the game, Izzo was yucking it up with the refs which I'm sure helped in the travesty we witnessed with the refs tonight.

- Geo was on fire in the first half and he lost all of his momentum and swagger by having the 2 fouls assessed against him in the first half as well as Izzo adjusting the defense to double him many times in he 2nd half.

- Eugene with another double double which is expected nowadays but tried to do too much at times.

- Thiam until the late 3 was invisible for most of the game.

- Kiss was on during the first half and playing with swagger which was good to see.

- Another great warrior effort by Shaq Doorson.

- Thought Mathis; Myles and Caleb played very well and liked Mathis' toughness late in the game when he shoved Langford at the FT Line.

- Interested in the amount of minutes that Harper played as I don't recall him playing much in 2nd half.

- Please tell Dourcore to stop with the 17 foot shots

- Saw Chris Ash during the game and could not tell whether he was even wearing a Rutgers shirt. He is so out of his element here. Just go away!

-Other notables at game included Plaxico Burress; Adam Zagoria.

- At one point during game in 2nd half, we were down 10 and Hobbs is noshing with the courtside seats saying "we're not done yet" and I yelled at him whether he says that during football games.

- Thought how MSU started 2nd half was turning point in game as we could never match the deficit they did on us in first several minutes of 2nd half.

- This Sparty team is good not great. Can't see them as a 2nd weekend squad in March.

Eugene is my favorite player on this team, but he was terrible tonight. He was the only reason we weren't leading by 5 at half. 3-11 in the first, and took at least 5 awful shots.

He certainly forced some shots but I think this was also the by product of who was on the floor with him at the time. With Baker on the bench (kiss perhaps too) there was nobody really who seemed to moved and wanted the ball. I applaude him for trying to take control but again I think it was more a byproduct of nobody else trying to take a shot.

Depth plain and simple. Once RU Hs multiple players with 2+ fouls they had to back off and it changed the complexion of the game. Agree on McConnell. Very pleasant surprise.

This is still a roster in discovery mode.

Myles Johnson played tough and had a nice 2nd half basket, but 2 missed FTs...another upside piece would be making 1 of 2.

Mathis is an electric athletic and clearly the most fluid athlete on the roster....i like him along the baseline drawing contact OR at the top of the floor, giving him a chance to operate in space. Made 5 of 6 FTs should calm him down, but as much as Eugene hunts down his shots, I would allow Mathis the leeway to create a little more out of the structure of the offense. Sometimes drawing contact stops bleeding more than execution each time down the court.

I also like him as an extension of pressure, potentially in passing lanes. He's cut down on his defensive breakdowns, which is what I'm watching...I'll let everyone else follow the herd and base his contributions on how many 3s he shoots or how many points he scores. In 2 weeks time, he's a completely dialed in defensive piece, that impacts possessions now.

Kiss has a moxie when he hits shots....I can see why he had Gonzaga and Seton Hall games on his resume with big shooting from 3...he also didn't force anything and played within the structure of the concepts.

Caleb McConnell and Shaq Carter kept this game in contact in the 1st half. Carter probably warranted more minutes because Eugene was worn down trying to generate points, leaning on Nick Ward and vice versa, Aaron Henry and others underneath like Goins etc... Eugene's legs were gone because he plays so hard on both ends.

McConnell wasn't surprising....his HS and AAU tapes were very similar to tonight...he seems a bit slower off that foot injury this summer and seems to be getting back into things. He's not a pure PG, but possesses the ability to go left or right and has 3 point range.....and defends without fouling.

The experimental aspect continues...Baker off the ball, on the ball....McConnell plays with Baker and Mathis as the 3.....??...Mathis and Kiss brings the ball up to allow the 2 man game after the pass to the SG (Baker), to be run with Eugene. It gives you a shooter threat working in tandem with someone that can generate his own shot, off the dribble....Eventually once the players all get enough time and reps, Mathis, Kiss and Harper can all run that set offense.

But the eye opening was if McConnell can be a shooting threat from 3 at 6'6" at PG and can find room inside the 3 point line and towards the basket, it opens up how I expect Mulcahy to fit in that exact role. Then you have McConnell who does the same and can also play off the ball as a shooting threat that can create off the bounce, make a pass etc. Right now, teams have scouted RU well with Baker on the ball, we need to show other options going forward.

There's going to be 3 to 4 games where everything clicks and 3 to 4 where we struggle in conference. It's the remaining 12 to 14 games where certain players take turns as the 3rd option or 3rd 4th scoring guy....and we get a flash performance off the bench.

Encouraged with a lot of things tonight, off of 1 day off and a big win. Definitely some signs we are staying ahead of schedule on this rebuild.

Good recap, bac, as always.

Regarding the young guys, it seems like one or two of them makes a baby step forward each game. Tonight it was Caleb finally gaining some composure and hitting a couple of shots, and Mathis balling out on defense and hitting 5-6 FTs. Other nights it’s been Harper scoring or dishing out 5 assists, or Myles blocking shots like a senior or making a superb pass. You can just SEE the talent slowly emerging. I can’t wait for them to all grow up.

Zags has a national following, despite his reputation being somewhat dubious on a local level. When Zags is at your game and prized 2020 PF/C Cliff Omoyuri is sitting behind the RU bench, those are notable points of the rebuild that took place.

They had the best big man. Their guards were better tonight and their main three are really good. that’s an outstanding team. That said. Our main guys seemed to have lost their legs a bit which was noticeable when the game got away early second half. I wasn’t surprised at all. If you coached or played in similar situations you start to learn about emotion, fatigue etc. Don’t take too much from one game or one situation. While it wasn’t exactly the same as sju it was similar in that our guys on the home court emotionally aren’t ready. The calmness needed to win these games isn’t there yet. We pissed away many posessions because we weren’t ready for the moment. In basketball 4 or 5 plays changes the outcome. It will come.

Learning curves is the perfect phrase

This is a game that in Two years win...as we didn’t focus enough to find ways to score in thar 5 minute stretch between the 15 and 10 minute mark we cooled them down, but didn’t make up the deficit even though the opp to do as there

I would've liked to see us get the ball down low when Myles was in the game and go after Ward a little bit. Make Ward work on the defensive end and see if we could get a couple of fouls on him. Myles showed he had the skills to be effective against him the couple of times we did it.

That would have been key if it had happened. Ward was the big difference in this game as he was tough to contain and he drew many fouls on our big men. If he was forced to work harder on the defensive end he might of gotten in foul trouble and his offense would have slowed down. Izzo often rested Ward so making him work harder on defense could have made a significant difference in the game. Key play in the game was the questionable foul called on Issa ( or was it EO) late in the second half with Rutgers closing to 6 down and Mathis gaining possession on the loose ball and momentum.

BAC- as usual outstanding recap of the game. Its a positive sign that fans see promise in the near future with Pikiell as the head coach.

Tale of two halves. Given the amount of foul trouble we had early, I was very happy to make it to half time only down two points. The contributions from the likes of Caleb, Shaq Carter and even Duke were big in keeping us close. Caleb's play was the highlight of the game for me from a moving forward perspective. While the refs did not help us, we did earn many of our fouls and some of them were of the not so smart variety away from the basket.

The start of the second half was the killer. I looked up at the score at one point and we had 4 points since halftime and we were already 8 minutes in to the half. MSU dialed it up and our shots did not fall. They have a bunch of well conditioned bigs and did not seem to miss McQuad much at all. I thought several guys did look gassed at points and that was disappointing and we stopped boxing out and allowed uncontested follow-ups around the rim.

Not sure what happened with the rotation where Harper did not see much time after intermission. Kiss clearly looked like he needed a blow.

Agree that EO tries to do too much at times. He needs to let it come to him through the offense rather than pounding the rock and settling for a fade away in the point over a taller opponent.

I like Myles's moves in the post down low on a couple of occasions. Very promising

Mathis is really coming along. I like his aggressiveness driving to the basket and his ability to guard perimeter players.

I thought we had enough bigs to handle Ward and I was wrong. We let him set up too deep too often. He is crafty around the basket. Fouling him was not a bad strategy since he missed several FT's but we needed to a better job denying him the ball. He also did get away with several elbows while establishing position and setting screens.

MSU is a good team and played well. I was a little disappointed in the second half but saw enough to remain optimistic going forward.

A few thoughts...

- Short rest with a late night flight seemed to factor in a bit

- Geo. Was on fire early, but lost his rhythym when he had to sit an extended period. One of those fouls was a really good sell job. Unfortunately couldn't get us out of our slump fast enough.

- EO. Played with a ton of passion, but started to press and try a bit to hard. Clearly frustrated by the BS call on him, and a couple others. Needs to settle down after refs blow a call, but loved his heart tonight

- Doorson. Not really mobile enough to keep up with their big full time, but definitely had some shining moments.

- Kiss. Feed off the crowd energy early, and looked a bit better defensively. Unfortunately, shots weren't falling as well after the half.

- Thiam. Sadly invisible. Timid. One big three, one great drive to the hoop that didn't fall.... and a lot of dribbling and passing around the perimeter. Needs to take his shot .. two attempted threes isn't enough.

- McConnell. Grew up a lot that game, and settles some concerns for me about the backup PG spot. Doesn't warrant a ton of minutes yet, but I think he'll continue to grow through the year.

- Mathis. Really turning into a defensive pest, and I love it. With his first step attacking a lane, I think he'll be on the line a lot in his career.

- Johnson. Also struggled with their big and got into early foul trouble. I think he'll be much better suited to this matchup next year.

- Carter. Gave some good minutes, and seemed more than serviceable. Looked a touch better than Doucoure, imo, who seemed to not get his role in the offense.

Spartans won the battle in the paint but they'll do that to most teams.

Thought RU played really hard and had a great atmosphere in the building.

Only way to negate that advantage inside was to hit some 3's and unfortunately they weren't hitting them.

You need to shoot better than 30 % to beat a club like Michigan State.

Can’t blame the refs. RU settled for way too many outside jumpers. In the 2nd half when Mathis drove the ball, he got the calls. Gio did his best Damon Santiago impression.

I would've liked to see us get the ball down low when Myles was in the game and go after Ward a little bit. Make Ward work on the defensive end and see if we could get a couple of fouls on him. Myles showed he had the skills to be effective against him the couple of times we did it.
He scored with ease. Ward is a beast offensively but he doesn't have the length to bother Myles shot
