Basketball GAMEDAY THREAD: Rutgers Basketball versus Maryland

JWill makes wayyyy too many mistakes for a 5th year senior
Completely agree.

But the conversation was about defense and I think my point still stands. We came out of a first half where we gave up 50 and Acuff had a couple minutes of playing time where he was some combination of low effort and low effectiveness on D. I can see how that gets you benched in the second half

Sorry it was sarcasm.. Chow loves Sha and shits on Pike
One holds his players accountable and one doesn't - enough for me. Hey, he's less than ten games over .500 in nine years and almost 40 games under .500 in Big 1 play, but keep saying he deserves this or deserves that. He doesn't deserve anything. Much better coaches than he have been fired while achieving more. One of them just the other day.

The problem is there are no good options. Acuff and Hayes have issues defensively. JWill has no range and makes bonehead plays. JMike can't drive and finish. Derkack turns it over and can't shoot from 3

Someone has to play. Pike has to just keep trying based on matchup and ride the hot hand in any game where someone has it

We need to be able to make more 3's though bottom line. I'd like to see if we can get Hayes hot in a game. If he doesn't have it then game him

Bailey out; Harper out; Harper out again; Bailey out lol. Comically bad "luck," or whatever it is this season.
Tough season think we'd have 2-3 more W's. I think we win this game with a 1/2 decent AB. Dont think he even needed his A game. Think we needed Ogbole against Queen. That boy raised his draft stock drastically today

I was really confused about something today and I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me on here can help clarify it ...

I noticed that every time the opposing team was on offense, they gave the ball to their best player and then he drove to the basket and scored. Every time. I was of the understanding that this was impossible to do, and Pike's coaching today further cemented that belief, because when Rutgers is on offense, every single player touches the ball as it gets passed around the perimeter ... except for our best player, who stands at the top of the key and watches and our least athletic player takes the ball and wildly drives to the basket (and gets stuffed). In the second half, the only time Rutgers' best player (Harper) got the ball was when he grabbed a rebound or a loose ball (and then of course, he immediately drove to the basket and scored easily).

Can someone explain why Maryland's dumb coach kept giving the ball to their good offensive player (and absolutely nobody else) every play?

Yeah I don't disagree with any of that

Pike is getting exposed. Good coaches gets the ball to his best player. We can’t do it. Acuff was coming along fine. Now Harper is back, Acuff disappears. WTF

We gave up 90pts!!!! Why play Williams and Derkack?

We have the best point guard in the country so of course Pike took the ball out of his hands for the entire second half. He didn't even bring the ball up the court. Instead Derkack became our primary ball handler (again).

It’s rare that one team’s best offensive player matches up against the other team’s worst defensive player.

Sommerville’s shadow would score on him.

To his credit, he did manage to score today despite having a no inch vertical.

The EO injury was a bigger problem than most people thought. His presence today would have been valuable.
I said this earlier and I’ll say it again. The issue wasn’t the EO injury. The issue was EO and Martini being your starting 5 and 4 with Martini being the emergency center. Laughable miscalculation by coach. I think Pike has done a decent shop making some adjustments. But make no mistake, this roster was very poorly constructed.

They have still only lost one Big Ten game with both Bailey and Harper near or at 100%. (4-1). I wonder what could’ve been. But the season is not over.

He is a freshman bigs unless you are Queen who don’t grow on trees take time to develop… I just don’t get folks shitting on Somerville. Someone posted his fr pt average per game was in the ball park of Zack Eddy’s fr average per game. Have you even scored 12 points at the 5 in a rec game?

No, athleticism doesn’t take time to develop. Either you have it or you don’t. He’s not athletic and can’t leave his feet. Not ever will he develop it.

Anyhow, was answering the question about how a team continues to feed its best player who seemingly scored at will. I gave the answer. It was a bigger mismatch than you will usually ever see except for unfavorable defensive switches on screens.

Agreed.

Even Queen has been humbled a few times this year by grown-ass men who will not play in the NBA. It's hard for a freshman big...

MD in the first half did a great job playing ugly. So many hands/arms in passing ones etc with deflections.

LS had a ton of turnovers because he was being indecisive.

If I wasn’t laughin’ at this post I would be cryin’……it is a head scratcher how JWill has the ball in his hands for 20-25 seconds of some of our possessions

He's softer than the Pillsbury dough boy. PiIKE should have Never bet the lane defense on him.
Correct. But don’t forget he’s also slow and plays below the rim. Speed of a glacier and hops of a boulder buried in mud.

But hey, he’s a good foul shooter.

Lathan selfish and lost us momentum

Dercack should never shoot a 3

Pike did not play this right with needing 3s in second half as he had wrong personnel in all over the pkace

And of course Ace not playing truly hurt us

Any dream of NCAA officially over
It’s been over. This team can surprise a lot of teams in a given game but no way they string together the necessary wins with the exceptionally weak supporting cast.

All recruiting services who do rankings for a living are wrong… Shelby and DHajek are the true experts. I will go with the actual history of the vast majority of bigs at the college level.

Just a better team than us. Good fight. If I recall, Reese abused Cliff last year as well. Add a lottery pick and it is what it is.

They're not ranking defense. Like you apparently they look at scoring. Go ahead and be naive.

Btw.. what does pre college stars have to do with actual play? His defense is weak and he fouls a lot. He doesn't body anybody up well.
So he has some offensive skills. Not what we're talking about about here.

So are you saying that freshman 5 in the don’t take time to develop? Or that 18 year old kids don’t transform their bodies in a college lifting regiment? I am the naive one?
Yeah. What can be is not what is. We're talking about now not next year or the year after. Get it?

Slow is slow. Can’t fix it. and players who are much quicker now, who train too, will always be a lot quicker.

he’s just a slow, unathletic kid who plays below the rim. no fast-twitch muscle or Big10 big athleticism

OK on offense, brutal on defense.

LS will be a very good Big 10 player in two years if he stays around, a very big if.
