Basketball GAMEDAY THREAD: Rutgers Hoops vs. Sacred Heart

Really positive signs. Team taking care of business to start the season. Seems like more depth this season. Some great D at times a missing our best D player.

While we're all wondering how good this team really is and how we'll do against top teams, when was the last time we simply annihilated lower tier teams twice in a row to start the season? We've struggled with more than our share of games against teams like these in the past under Pike (and everyone else who coached here), so it's still a huge plus to play like this. There's nothing really to "criticize" right now, as we're playing as well as one could expect against this competition.

I know we made SHU look not so good, but they just beat Hartford 77-70 on the road.
So they are not the bottom of the barrel. But this year feels so much different than last year’s bad OC losses.
When we win the B1G, a few doubters will say it was a down year for the conference.
Seems like we have the pieces to at least make top 4 and double bye.

These are the scores RU should get against the lower level OOC teams … awesome job … and without Caleb!

I'm old enough to remember when a handful of posters pointed to Simpson and Woolfolk as proof that Pikiell could not recruit.

Anyone else remember ?
Yes lol. The star gazers that can't watch tape and evaluate talent

Or maybe just trust Pike since he keeps landing good players regardless of ranking?

Some are slow learners and suspiciously quiet when the team is having success

I’m a big PM fan. But he’s been kind of bad in the first two games. And the team D is a little different this season, creating fewer opportunities for PM to do his lane clogging thing on D. He’s working super hard, but not contributing as much as last season.

agree. Seems like he’s pressing a bit

Recruiting rankings are hit or miss. Pike and his staff use their own eyes and judgment of talent. More often than not, they get the players they need

Yep, exactly. Could be shoulder. Could be figuring out how he fits in w/the new lineup.

Spencer plays the same role for the team as PM, from what I can tell. But Spencer is quicker, is more of a pure shooter, makes his layups all the time, and is just as active and effective in forcing turnovers.

PM has great court vision and is brilliant at man D where he can guard someone with a weak outside shot allowing PM to cheat off that guy and interfere with the other team's offense, double-team and so forth. And he can be brilliant at drawing other team's bigs off our bigs in the paint and getting our guys the ball for easy layups/dunks.

I think Pike has a bit of work to do in order to have both Spencer and PM on the court at the same time and have them fully compliment each other. It's a good problem to have as long as a solution can be found that both players are happy about.

Neither Spencer nor PM are going to be ideal at man D having to defend some of the super-quick point guards out there straight up. But perhaps, if they get really good at playing off each other, they can combine to effectively shut down such quick players by forcing them towards each other all the time and switching or else allowing the rest of the team to rotate around them.
