Gavin needs more touches…

I generally refrain from criticizing Pike on rotations, but his handling of Gavin is baffling.

This is an offensively challenged team. We’re not good enough on D to beat teams if we can’t even put up 60, and limiting Gavin’s minutes seems like a good way to make sure we don’t put up 60.
We saw it against princeton. We saw it today. We go on a run when Pike puts a defensive lineup out tbere and puts Gavin on the bench.

He isnt good enough and the team isnt good enough on most shifts to overcome his deficiencies on defense

I, like all fans, want to see him succeed NOW. He is our best offensive player on a team starving for offense. I AGREE. That doesnt mean we still arent better right NOW with him on the bench.

We went on a run once in this game - other than that we were just really struggling offensively all game. I think you have to put Gavin out there and see if he can grow in the places where he is deficient. We desperately need his offense. The thought process is that if you have strong enough defensive people around him that will help to cover up where he is lacking defensively.

What are you talking about. We got smoked at the start of the first half and start of the 2nd half when Gavin wasn’t in the lineup. I havent seen the numbers, but our starters were probably something like -40.

Rutgers does not have the horses to win 55-53. You and Pike need to realize that right now

Gavin does not seem to have any “dog” or ”swagger” to his play…he needs to develop this quick. sadly this isn’t something you develop, and especially as a bench player after being the lead guy through high school

I saw the situation today more as we went on a run when Pike put Cliff on the bench. Wolf was giving us better interior defense at the 5 than Cliff was, and was much less of a negative on offense. Between the turnovers and poor shot selection, Cliff’s offensive game was a big part of the reason our offense looked as awful as it did.

The defensive lineup we had out there included Hyatt, and I really don’t think Gavin for Hyatt is that significant of a trade off on D. The most significant part of that run was us hitting three 3 pointers in about a minute of game time.

Anyone defending Pike and his use of Gavin needs their head checked, especially after the garbage I watched today. Gavin needs to start and get significant minutes asap. The defensive liability narrative needs to stop because I see a lot of liabilities out there
So you know more than Pike

Next game watch the following:

1) what happens when Gavin is on the floor and Pike subs. Gavin always looks over thinking his HC is pulling him. He thinks the coach has no confidence in him and that’s effecting his confidence; and

2) after Gavin gets taken out does he put his head down and look frustrated. The answer is yes.

IMO, Pike is not handling him correctly

He is a defensive liability right now. He's a frosh, he's learning. On offense he's good but defense he looks lost. Big jump in competition from HS to B1G.

Illinois in first half hit back to back 3s on his man. He can't give up 12 and score 5. That's not going to help. Again. not blasting the kid at all but it's an issue right now. He will improve hopefully. He's a puppy, he's learning.

Our starting lineup was absolutely torched by Illinois. This idea that somehow Gavin is playing any worse defensively than everyone else on the team is FALSE.

Gavin not being Ray Lewis on defense is making pike sit him.
But Hyatt can miss 10 layups and be an absolute ball hog black hole , like I said in the game thread ….hyatts next pass will be his FIRST pass. He passes less then Carmelo Anthony when he gets the ball , which is almost impossible to imagine

And only Gavins poor defensive is deserving of benching.
Poor offense is fine to stay in the starting lineup.
Offensive liability perfectly fine but if you have a bad play on defense you should be pulled makes no sense on a team that scores in the 50s

The reality is that if the team is offensively inept, the players capable of hitting 3s and creating off the dribble need a longer leash defensively to compensate for the rest of the roster's offensive limitations

It is about playing the players that give you the best chance of winning. Against Princeton and Illinois i am fairly certain Gavin on the bench gives us a better chance of winning.

I really dont know what that optimal lineup is. What scares me is it might include Oskar or woolfolk at the 4

Oskar scoring our first bucket of the game 6 plus minutes in is incredibly damning

Why arent we in games
What did the Princeton and Illinois game have in common.

We gave up a ton of points early and got back in to each 1st half playing defensive lineups.

Illnois had 25 in the 1st 10 minutes i believe. We got vack in to the game with stops and poor offensive lineups somehow scored

I see Pike coaching very similar to Schiano in the way they stick to their way of doing things to try and win without the horses to compete. Instead they should change it up to work against deficiencies.

Forget Gavin needing more touches...we have a team that got outrebounded 2x by Illinois and almost about the same by the Mighty Cocks of St Petes. Clearly there is an issue there. We consistently play man to man defense in the half court and we are getting burned on the boards, one on one play again talent, and have massive closeout issues on the wing or down low help. WE HAVE NOT MADE A SINGLE CHANGE!!

So we keep talking about how bad GG is on defense but what I watch out there is a collective group of players who cant defend except in certain spots(ie CO blocks). So why not just keep him in there and use him for his offense as no one else can seem to score on this team and we need shooters.

My starters: (We need offense from the get go)
Cliff
Hyatt
GG
Simpson
Noah

Bench
Williams
Woolf
JaMike
Palm

One thing working is our press and we should do that all game and then fall back into a zone(2-3 or 1-3-1) and create matchup man at times to shake things up. This team needs to work against their weaknesses. Also stop trying to post Cliff up all the time--doesnt work. High PnR all day long with him and have a shooter on the wing in those scenarios.

I’d say poor play by our small guards. We got back into those games when they stopped driving to the rim and missing layups and instead moved the ball finding open shooters.

And then Pike went back to starters and we fell down again

So who are those players

I lost my shit when he rolled the starters out there for the 2nd half.

I am not saying we win if he goes with the gritty style which got us back in the game, but Pike definitely conceded the game once he went with our SOFT starters in the 2nd half

I haven't been this angry with our team since Jordan. That first 10 minutes was disgraceful effort by our leaders.
