Gay ex-Rutgers college football player says stress of staying in the closet forced him to retire

We're not discussing an adult. This is a teenager struggling with his sexual orientation, who came from an environment that was not safe. He walked into a new environment and likely heard 'Fag', 'Homo', and other slurs used more casually and frequently than all the other slurs combined. That's a typical experience for a young gay athlete. Still. Most everywhere. Even at RU. In NJ. In 2024.

The vast majority of guys using that language are not homophobic. They are typically young guys horsing around, without a clue. I suspect most of our players will take this as a learning experience, and perhaps edit themselves a bit going forward. I'm not so sure about some of the posters on this board.

I'm glad that Jake is healthy, and I hope he's happy at RU.

A "phobia" is a psychological disorder.
In that case, the company line holds that people with disorders should not be condemned for things they cant control.
However when it comes to resistance to transmogrified sexual behaviors/identity disorders the "phobia" harassment is encouraged and sanctified .

I never liked stepping in dog mess as a kid playing in the grass - nobody taught me that and i didn't live in fear.
It was common sense to resist stepping in something so foul smelling - only later did I learn it can cause things like hookworm.
So avoiding things like stepping in dog doo is not irrational.

Likewise, as man that likes women, the idea of oinking one in the bottom never appealed to me.
On the surface I clearly saw it was a degrading act pretty far removed from natural decency.
No guy can take a women he should respect and honor and so such things to her.
While some say social norms are relaxed now, the aren't relaxed to those opposed to degrading acts.
The correlation between the two is a key - the "evolution" toward acceptance really isn't there - its just upside down.

Polls and studies show around a third of women try le oink and most don't like it and give it up - they realize its degrading

"The study analyzed sex data from the National Survey of Family Growth and specifically looked at a nationally representative sample of 10,463 straight, sexually active women between the ages of 15 and 44. Researchers discovered that 36.3 percent of the women surveyed said they’ve tried a_al sex a least once in their lives. Apparently they didn’t like it all that much because only 13.2 percent said they had a_al within the last 12 months."

Women were also at risk of more diseases

"Researchers also discovered a disturbing trend: Women were “significantly” less likely to use condoms for anal sex than vaginal sex, putting them at a greater risk for contracting an STI... If you have anal sex or are interested in trying anal sex, have your guy wear a condom. Pregnancy may not be a concern, but you can still get a slew of STIs from back-door sex."

So for me personally I don't even need to move away from male/female relations to see certain behaviors violate the sciences of anatomy and hygiene. Those are time proven facts and erasing them is no sign of generational sophistication - just the opposite
This isn't hard to understand. No one cares if you want to bang a partner, male or female, through the backdoor. No third party is going to make you feel bad for that.

Problem is, you do care - to a creepily deep level - about those who disagree with your take. And for some reason that no one understands, you feel the need to impose your own views on them ("no guy should"). And use dubious statistics to do so. That's the problem.

Stop doing that and no one will ostracize you for your "phobia." Otherwise, keep stepping in dog sht.

play football at one of the highest competitive levels?

He's a long-snapper. They get protected.

granted.. at Rutgers in past years the long-snapper had a lot of work. But this player's issue had nothing to do with football... and he is cashing in a football scholarship for the rest of his time at Rutgers.

it should have been denied.. this is a bad precedent.

nothing aginst the kid.. I hope he's better now they he removed the stress of being closeted.. but it had nothing to do with football.

Gay men are two times more likely to have ulcerative colitis

Not gay football players.. gay men. I suppose if they studied that and the number for gay football players and it was 4 times more likely then the medical retirement status might be justifiable to a point.

We have any other medical retirements for unrelated afflictions milking the budget? Do we need to beg Elon to open a DOGE branch at Rutgers?
Women are 100 times more likely to have breast cancer.

Are you saying that because you are a raging Homophobe, that we have to accept that from you because it is a disease?

Disagree. Everyone 10 years old and up knows those are demeaning, derogatory terms. They all ‘have a clue.’

Wonder how a gay player would have felt in the Northwestern locker room a couple of years ago before Fitz was canned.

  • "Running": A punishment that "consisted of 8-10 upperclassmen, dressed in masks, holding down a player, and dry humping the player in a dark locker room."
  • "Shrek claps": When "upperclassmen on the team would run around" a player who made a mistake in practice "while clapping their hands above the head" of the teammate.
  • "Carwash": A "tradition" that consisted of "players lining up, standing naked, and spinning around the entrance of the showers so that all freshman players were forced to rub up against the line of men to get to their showers."
  • "Naked center-quarterback exchange": Another "tradition" that called for freshmen to execute a routine center-quarterback snap while both were naked.
  • "Gatorade shake challenge": When freshmen were forced to drink as many Gatorade shakes as possible in 10 minutes, and if they refused they would be subjected to "running."

I hadn't followed the Fitz story - this is simply outrageous stuff for any athlete to have put up with, gay or not. Sounds way worse than naked FT shooting under Bannon. But yeah, locker rooms are bastions of inclusion and understanding.

if you think this thread has this responses because people have an issue with him being gay then you sir are fking dumb and should log off and not come back.

that said, your narrative is wrong as the younger generation is skewing further right of center than what the country is. Kids today are fed up, angry, and much meaner than we were as kids. Get out of your bubble, expand your mind lest you lose the future
I wouldn't equate "right of center" with "not accepting of homosexuality" (though there is certainly an overlap in a Venn Diagram). Kids today may be "fed up and angry", but they are also more tolerant of other lifestyles. I can give you a personal example...when I was at PSU in the late 90s, I had a neighbor across the hall that would wear a tshirt in public of the Trix Rabbit that said "silly Fa***t, Dicks are for Chicks". I highly doubt that anyone on a college campus would comfortable to wear that shirt in 2024. Thankfully, people are generally more comfortable in coming out of the closet today than in prior generations, even if you think that kids today are "much meaner".

I'm aware of your background. But you are taking the rutgersal and RU#s approach to the stadium noise/music/presentation that "if I don't see it or it doesn't bother me, it doesn't exist." (heavily paraphrased). Maybe the places you have been and are at have excellent compliance programs. Media/Schmedia. To a degree, one side of the media goes off the deep end at the slightest hint of an issue that may not be there, but on the other hand, the other side is quick to dismiss every case. While not in the athletics environment, I have personally observed behavior that has negatively impacted queer people (not using that term in the pejorative), and I'm not some rainbow flag-flying activist. If I don't say so myself, I'm objective about these things, and don't get all emotional even when it involves someone close to me.
If you're going to invoke my name, at least try to get it right. While the volume doesn't bother me, I've never said that means it doesn't bother anyone else - all I've said is our board, which I've acknowledged is fairly heavily against the current volume levels, is not representative of the entire fanbase (especially students), so I'd like to see some data before making a change.

On the topic at hand, you've made some very good points, however, and my experience with young people is similar to yours (also have close family members and kids of close friends who are gay and have had frank discussions about what goes on in colleges and locker rooms, as some of these young folks are athletes).

what's lost here is the old 'sticks and stones ......and all that it implies'

kids are going to say things, zero question about that and zero question you will be able to 'regulate' it away. It's part of the juvenile (key word) experience and maturation process of sorts. I simply refuse to believe kids today have it harder than generations past and especially pre 80s where racial and other type slurs were beyond common. Pretty sure many people on this board have experienced it and yet, no one is cowering in the corner or using it as a crutch.

Don't think most people care if a kid is gay as long he/she not making it an issue. Rutgers HAS had players that were gay and no one knew the wiser.

Lets' all just koombayah the day, it's almost Thanksgiving and RU is on tonight playing Bama. live and let live is key

True. They (we?) know the language is demeaning. Yet groups of young male athletes use the terms carelessly in the moment, clueless as to impact.
have you ever been around female athletes? got news for you, women are far crueler and far more derogatory. Don't let those hugs after every dig in volleyball fool you. lol

With those stories, I'd think it were the "norms" who were abused by the abmorals [sic]. Come to think of it, in that context, gays would be"norms" too, by comparison.

knowing the language is demeaning is plenty damning. are you saying they think it’s beneficial ? C’mon now, they know it’s wrong and it’s not just silly ‘locker room talk’

Whoops, I conflated yours and al's positions. I usually do tag people when I bring them up, but was in a hurry.

Every single word he said was. He even started his very strange post with defending phobias as disease
The sexual act he defines as “gay” repulses him and he clearly stated it is dirty, not right etc…
He has no clue that the actual sexual act has zero to do with a being homosexual

well I guess we'd need to actually define what is homophobia and homophobic remarks because not seeing anything he posted that would fit the literal translation. The word and application of such has been bastardized so badly it's almost obscene in modern debate. We are seeing that here. I recognize Ashoken riles feathers and is far more direct with some of his 'liturgies' but often it boils down to people being stable (emotionally and intellectually) to actually debate his assertions without resorting to , 'that's racist/homophobic/bigoted.

imho

"Phobias are diagnosable mental disorders."

"Childhood phobias occur most commonly between the ages of 5 and 9, and tend to last a short while. Most longer-lasting phobias begin later in life, especially in people in their 20s. Adult phobias tend to last for many years, and they are less likely to go away on their own, unless they are treated. Phobia can increase an adult's risk of other types of psychiatric illness, especially other anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse.

Of course recognizing men in women's sports as irrational is not an example of "transphobia" - except to the people who have lost their grounding in common sense and decency.

The "civil rights" movement that came about in response to black oppression by Southern Democrats, was hijacked to be made about white women's careers, behavior transmogrifications, sexual peccadilloes and other things. Thankfully the recent decent into madness has woken most people up to the insanity being seeded into society. The immigrants and minorities were most helpful in that

The old sticks and stones…

So true. I can’t be hurt by words and I’ve never hurt anyone with words because there’s this old adage about “words can never hurt me” that is 100% accurate.

It’s actually impossible, unless you’re a pussy, to be humiliated or be alienated by the words people say.

Other than a pussy, no one has ever been traumatized by anything that wasn’t a physical assault. This is a known fact.

ok- so, not sure how to classify you. But you have issues with homosexuals, minorities, women, civil rights…
But since these are all phobias, you should be protected too..,
Got it..,lol

Go find some more articles. You have made yourself clear to any rational person reading your crap.

My nephew died after surgery required because of colitis. He was 17.

Taking the call from his mother informing us he died and then having to call his grandparents was one of the worse things I ever had to do.
I had three of those surgeries in a year when I had colitis, which is now Crohn's. The disease almost killed me. A severe case of colitis will wreck you.

The leading cause of intense homophobia is being conservative and gay.
I don't want to turn things political, but I would agree that politicians of all stripes, the ones who pontificate about family values the most, tend to wind up getting themselves into trouble with sex scandals, often involving minors. The whole "he who doth protest too much" thing.

Some kind of weird overcompensation thing, I guess.

Not really trying to be political here. Just a statement of fact, if you are left leaning it’s much less of a big deal to come out of the closet. The more conservative you are the bigger the ramifications and the less acceptance you’re likely to get from your community. Which means you are more likely to keep it bottled up and be repressed and go mildly insane.
