Give Mulcahy the keys now to run the show

I would guess Young starts the year at PG. Give him a shot and see how he does while easing Mulcahy in. If Young is a bust, either go to Mulcahy if he's ready or back to Geo or Caleb

Still withholding judgement on Young until we see him in scarlet. At Texas, he had a 0.86 assist to turnover ratio, managed to get to the line for one free throw every 40 min, and shot .271 from range. I'm told that he was misused at Texas in a system that didn't fit his strengths, and that he's a fast and tough on-ball defender. He's definitely shown to be a good teammate on the sidelines, too. I'm not ready to anoint him with a starting spot or even starter minutes until I see what he looks like on the court within Pike's system. We often get too wrapped up in how great the redshirt guy is (Kiss, Johnson, Judge).

That's why I said just give him a shot and see how he does. We won't know for sure till we see him in a game. And if he doesn't work out, go to plan B, C, D

Year 1-3 B1G total 7 wins
Year 4 B1G 7 wins

Year 5.....let's give someone different a shot at point guard. Let's see how he does. They guy dominated the Skyland Conference let's give him a shot at PG in college in the B1G.

Even Pike has stated Geo is not really a point guard and is playing the position out of necessity.if you can't see that one of the things that needs to change to take the next step is,a true point guard, then there's no sense in arguing with you

Phil....you are the man....but the expectations are wildly out of whack.

....people are asking way too much out of Mulcahy because Geo is the only carryover beyond Eugene from last year, who can score.

Harper?

I have never said that Geo Baker is a true PG. I know a true point guard would help us get to the next level.

If Paul is below average shooter and a below average defender I just don't see him as a starting B1G point guard as a freshman.

He can certainly improve and I could be wrong.

Until he's shown something on the court at the PG spot, I'm not ready to just say "you're Plan A at PG".

In 63 games with Texas, he recorded an assist in just 32 of them, and recorded more than one assist in just 15 of them.

He averaged 1.7 assists per 40 minutes in his sophomore season with the Longhorns. The only rotation players on Rutgers this year that didn't top that number were Thiam, Carter, and Doorson.

Young was heralded out of HS as a 4-star PG, #23 in the country... and then he didn't see much burn at TX, and functioned more as a SG his sophomore year. He may be a phenom from the first game next year - but I have nothing to base that expectation on. Right now, until proven otherwise, he's guard depth for me. As is Mulcahy.

I'll reiterate I think Pikes gives him the ball Day One. He has game that is not currently represented on the roster. Ok, maybe some struggles early, but best option is to let him grow into it, as he's not a kid who's confidence will get shaken.

Otherwise, who are the options? Seems universally acknowledged now that neither Geo or Caleb are true PG's, so why thrust it on them, again? Young? I've seen him play, and back in my day he would have been known as a "chucker" or "gunner." That can be a good thing, the kid has game, speed, and if he can bring points off the bench...big time value.

Playing overseas in Spain will give extra experience and should help the team and staff.

Even though there is a consensus that Geo isn't a true pg, which I agree with, there is no reason we can't run him out as our starting pg next year. This will allow Mulcahy time to develop and get his feet wet. Geo left a bad taste in everyone's mouth because of the last few games. Let's not forget that we had our best season in the past 14 years with him starting at PG. Him and Mcconnell were adequate for most of the season. With goals of making a post season tournament next year, we can't afford to throw away early season wins with some experiment at the point. The experience Geo and Mcconnell have give us a great opportunity to be patient and work the other guards in.

Why didn't we recruit Josh Pierre Louis? He's a good ball handler and is really athletic. Mulcahy looks like he might get eaten alive in the Big10

Back on the market. I am NOT saying we should pursue him....just mentioning this.

I will end this post with 4 comments / quotes that all need to ingest and evaluate as we await the 2019/20 season:

1. Per Steve Pikiell tonight: I am excited to start next year with a recruit who I consider to be the best passer in the country. See Jerry Carino APP Article from tonight / Thurs 3/14 edition.

2. Per Jay Young at the most recent Court Club Meeting: Mulcahy will need to earn his role but I expect him to be playing vital minutes next year.

3. Per Josh Newman 1-2 months ago: Paul Mulcahy is the best PG in New Jersey - High School or College.

4. Per Steve Pikiell tonight: Geo is not a PG. He played out of position the entire year and I am very proud of him. Again see Carino's APP Article from tonight.

Connect the dots per the above and unless Mulcahy falls flat on his face, he will be running the show as PG next year at some point.
It may be just a bit premature to talk about giving Mulcahy the keys next year. He struggled last week in a high school game so he may not be ready right away to face Michigan State or Purdue. He may turn out to be a great player, but he is going to need time to adjust to B10 level of play.

Doubtful.

We won 7 games in B1G with Baker as point guard. If Mulcahy was a sure thing at point guard he would have been recruited as a PG by other schools AND he would have played it on his AAU team.

Baker needs to be in better shape/condition. He needs to play 28-30 MPG. Paul should at least provide valuable minutes as backup PG

Our inability to get minutes from a backup PG this year has a lot to do with Baker breaking down down the stretch.
I am not a b-ball expert, but we were basically a team of one-on-one matchups for the entire year. Caleb was the only player that was capable of distributing ball and that was once or twice a game. The freshmen have skills but who provides them the ball in a position to score?
