Jeff Hafley was a tremendous recruiter because of his ability to connect with the kids. When he spoke to them, it wasn't just about going to Rutgers. It was about life - how they were doing, their family, girlfriend, call of duty, world of warcraft, crap like that. AND he was genuine about it. THAT is how you build relationships. Building relationships takes time.
Now don't get me wrong - relationships is just one factor, albeit a big one.
The coach also needs to have "stain". The kids and those near the kids have to believe in the coach. This means WINNING.
I don't expect this year's recruiting class to all of a sudden return to the Hafley days. The relationships Flood destroyed have to be rebuilt AND Ash needs to show he can win. Then and only then, will you see recruiting become good again.
That may be too optimistic right now be patient will take a few years.Right now if HCCA can get us a top 40 class i'll be optimistic for next yr....hoping we get a few Ohio guys...NY/NJ-Fla-Pa/Md-Ohio is one helluva bluecollar recruiting base..
This. RU-2055 had a very good post going but like others feels the need to take a shot at Flood. The kids loved Flood. He came in at a bad time. He followed the guys who built us up and then, oh yeah, we then jumped into the Big 10 and are playing a schedule only rivaled by the Shea years. We needed a guy who could take us to the next level and I agree that was not Flood. Hopefully it is Ash."Relationships Flood destroyed" ? Not sure I'm getting this one. Supposedly players and coaches alike liked Flood and members of his staff. It sounds more like he couldn't close the deal...or that they didn't think as much of his coaching up ability....but rarely if ever did I hear he wasn't like or had burned any bridges
Your post has stain. If Ash can get us to the point where no one ever refers to a coach having or not having "stain" again, I will consider his hire to have been a success.

Moronic huh, so does going to the trouble to share this ridiculous thought/time waster...the board can count but thanks for the lesson....are you part of the RU100...Whats next....my lack of a question mark..that particular key is dysfunctional.....Ash = 3 characters....yet lacks respect.
HCCA = 4 characters and sounds moronic
I'm a hop, skip and jump away from having to wear Depends and have my kids change me. I'm not casting any stains in underwear stones from this glass house. [roll]So does his underwear.
Don't worry, you and Manhattan can go and applaud the fine coaching career of HCRE together.Moronic huh, so does going to the trouble to share this ridiculous thought/time waster...the board can count but thanks for the lesson....are you part of the RU100...Whats next....my lack of a question mark..that particular key is dysfunctional.....
I believe Hafley was at Rutgers 1.25 years. I looked at his recruits for 2011 and all 3 recruits never saw the field. In 2012, he had 4 recruits. The world didn't revolve around a Hafley.Jeff Hafley was a tremendous recruiter because of his ability to connect with the kids. When he spoke to them, it wasn't just about going to Rutgers. RE was a below avg HC lousy recruiter...FWIW...but try telling that to those on UConns board..I believe he peaked there at average and held them back then disaster struck...PP.....hope i didn't come across as sarcastic...hung over..lol..Don't worry, you and Manhattan can go and applaud the fine coaching career of HCRE together.
I'm not sure dave but I think he means if you include his clock cleaning of us when he was at Pitt he was amazing...lets be honest here...Wanny took many of his ''FHCGS'' primo targets up to Pitt through JH....i used to wonder how Wanny came here and left us basically leftovers until Wanny got fired and Angelichio,Cignetti and Haf were hired. That's when GS looked best here....then he left..I'm pretty sure GS will impart wisdom on Ash..I believe Hafley was at Rutgers 1.25 years. Your description about getting involved in the recruits and building relationships is right but Hafley affected 1 year recruits.
I agree. Where did this analogy "stain" come from? It makes me think of underwear stain. Ewwww.If Ash can get us to the point where no one ever refers to a coach having or not having "stain" again, I will consider his hire to have been a success.
So 2 kids that RU did not offer because they felt they had better commits/targets make you feel good about recruiting? Two recent defensive decommits from NJ to other P5, ash opening up lines of communication with these kids. Mis there a chance the pipes are thawing just a bit? It will take a lot I know, but happens one step at a time.
