Henry's Diner

When Henry's opened, it was great. It was 100 % operated by RU and had all student staff. Covid did kill it. The Dining Service will never give out a real answer as to why they are not back to regular hours.
We switched to the Rutgers Club. Pricey, but you get on campus early and walk over to the RAC when done.

Did it have more of a diner type schedule with the hours of operation back then?

At the start of the fall semester of 2017, Henry's hours were as follows. I did a search on their Facebook page.

Welcome back, Rutgers community!
Our regular hours are back, Mon-Fri 9am-11pm & Sat-Sun 9am-9pm
Come visit us!

I wish they would make it a sports bar, between men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and football parking, that would be 50 events per year that they could have people there. Eden, concerts, comedians, speaking of events, etc. planned for the future rack expansion/renovation and that could be an excess of 65 to 75 per year.
Seems like a lost opportunity. If you can have the RU alumni club and a movie theatre have a sports bar.

May sound silly but the dining hall on Livingston may not be a terrible option. Shouldn't be crowded and there are ton of food choices. Quality of food probably not the greatest, but certainly no different than the/a diner.
My son eats there for dinner 2-3 nights a week…food is good (by RU dining service standards ) but it’s is crowded most night

He thinks it will be crazier 60-90 minutes before game time so it’s probably not a good options for a weeknight game

Talk about another lost opportunity, last year the December Holiday tent before Hoops games was absolutely great. So what does RU do…. They don’t bring it back.
SMH. That’s why RU doesn’t have nice things.
Did they say they're not bringing it back this year?

If the athletic department saw a drop in concessions because of this event last year vs expectations i can understand why it wouldnt come back.

The athletic department still has to be run with some semblance of keeping losses within a certain limit. I have to think NIL has a negative impact.

Getting a liquor license in Piscataway? On a college campus, no less? Good luck!
It’s funny, the wife and i are in AZ and stopped into Flaggstaff. Stopped for a drink and a bunch of “Kids” were buying tickets to an event called Tequila Sunrise. All the bars open at 6AM the morning of the NAU homecoming game. I just laughed and said to my wife there is no way that happens in NJ.

Where did you hear this

They only did it one game last season vs the boardwalk being at every football game. Given that there are no season Tix left for MBB it would be a great thing to have every week.b

The holiday tent was great...food, alcohol, band, face painting, photo booth, we even got to go inside a giant snow globe & have our pics taken.

Adding “extra” hours to a restaurant‘s schedule is far from easy. You can’t just require staff to work on their nights off. Once in awhile, sure. But not for up to 20 home games.
Yikes, we know the basketball schedule well in advance. Why is it so hard to schedule accordingly?

If you have the simple solution to it you could make a ton of money providing your expertise to the thousands of restaurants that are operating with reduced hours because they can’t find workers.

If it’s owned by RU Dining Services why not move some staff over from the other dining halls on game night?

No tips at Tillet or Brower. But you could make a few extra bucks working at Henry’s.

So you agree that a diner should close at 6 pm. That's brilliant. Might as well turn it into a cell phone store.

That’s fine and understandable but…

They have our money now and people will still buy stuff once inside. Especially those with kids…who will probably bring them more often if something like this (a mini boardwalk thing under a tent and protected) is available more often.

1. The kitchen staff from the dining halls don’t prepare made-to-order meals and wouldn’t be familiar enough with the diner’s kitchen set-up to hit the ground running.

2. The dining halls don’t have servers.

1. Who says hit the ground running? It’s probably too late now for this season but maybe a gradual change can be implemented going forward.

2. Same with the staffing issues. Offer the training for those in-house now and if that doesn’t work out consider leasing the space out to someone who does this kind of thing already.

If you've gone there in the past you would know it was very crowded, hard to get seated and the service was slow. Rutgers' kids worked there that needed jobs not " professional" restranteers ". Basic food was good and a nice place but before a game if timing was an issue-- no way. Haven't been there since pandemic but I'm sure like many small businesses the shut downs hurt.

When I was in college, I worked my way through to pay for stuff as it came up
Its amazing that with all the students there are not enough who want to earn some cash

I think students still want to earn cash but maybe do it in different ways. There are more ways to earn money online or in non-traditional jobs.

Well they don’t have to worry… eventually they’ll refuse to pay off their loans. Free Education is the way.

Yep, I remember the same. Never went to the event, since our group tends to get food/drinks at places in NB/HP/Pway before some games and for others, we just arrive in time for tip-off, but it certainly looked like a fun time and I was thinking I'd try it out this season.

Henry's not being open until 7 pm on weeknights and not at all on weekends just seems so crazy, especially the 7 pm part, which is only one more hour (I get going from closed to open on weekends is a much bigger change).

And not having a bar/grill on campus just sucks. On College Ave it doesn't matter, since there are so many bars/restaurants very close to campus, but on Livingston (and Busch) it seems like a big miss - the university could make a killing on such places and it's not like students aren't going elsewhere for it.

Students don't want to break a sweat making money. That's why they tend to stick to tik toc or onlyfans.
