History is made: 16 Seed UMBC beats 1 Seed UVA

Glad my alma mater told Ryan Odom to take a hike to hire Mark Price...

Happy for Odom, good guy and a good coach.

I said that of the one seeds, uva was the most offensively challenged of the four and would most likely to be upset

But I could never have predicted that

UMBC scored 53 points in the second half! Against the #1 scoring defense in the country. Truly remarkable.

Shows what can happen when you hit a few shots. Wouldn't be us, but now you can't count us out either. We just have to find a way to get in the Dance.

The basketball gods hate RU so much they won't even let a #1 team with an ex Rutgers player win a game.
If they hated RU so much, he would have hit the winning shot in the national championship game. The basketball gods are changing their tune.

they said it couldnt happen, for some reason no matter how good UVA is or has been they always seemed to not be as scary as a blue blood as a 1.

just one of those miracle games, if they played it 100 times, UVA would win 98 of them, they needed to put them away early and didnt and then just never pulled it together no leadership

crazy quad right now....KSU/UMBC-Buffalo/KY...we very well could see a UMBC-Buffalo matchup for a trip to the elite 8

This one is for all of us who grew up dreaming of leading the first 16 seed to beat a 1 seed (and are perpetually infuriated that so few recruits seem to value the same kind of glory :joy:)

Two things:

- Not sure people realize how unlikely UMBC was to get here in the first place. I really felt equally stunned when UMBC went up to Vermont and won. I had Vermont as most likely conf tourney champ of all leagues. Teamrankings.com had Vermont as like 90 or 91 percent chance to win (I know that's not equivalent to the 98 percent chance UVA had). UMBC was probably the biggest underdog of all 32 conference tournament finals.

- This isn't exactly equivalent to the 1 vs 16 games we had back in 80s/90s/00s. UMBC would have been a 15 seed there before the play-in games so this is really a 1 vs 15 game for historical comparison purposes. I believe Lunardi tweeted something about this but its a point I've thought of for years when the games would be at halftime.

when we all rooted for the one seed to go down, we never envisioned it to be Virginia...we all were thinking UNC or Duke

Hard to believe that a team that blew through “the Best conference in the country” with only a single loss got absolutely SMOKED by a low major team! Wow!

For all those guys who rag on the mid majors... it’s what makes the tourney great. Amazing. We did not need to see TCU, Oklahoma, Arkansas...
Agreed. I hope pay back to the NCAA is a South Regional with UMBC vs Buffalo and Loyala-Chicago vs Nevada.

those tears from UVA fans in the crowd were a bit over the top. Going through 27 years of being a RU is experiencing losing , losing a game in the first round of the NCAA too bad. Get over it.
I know you probably can't relate to it, but when you are the number one seed in the entire tournament with your best chance to win the natty since Ralph Sampson played and you flame out (spectacularly btw) in the first round to a school that they probably couldn't point to on a map...you get that kind of reaction to a loss.

speaking of Sampson, UVA is now the loser in arguably the two biggest upsets in college basketball history.
