History is made: 16 Seed UMBC beats 1 Seed UVA

This is the essence of why we watch....and it's not impossible.

A normal 3 star commit that was a Shaka Smart recruit at another Cinderella VCU... right out of the DMV....his profile shows a bunch of considerable schools that recruited Jairus Lyles...VCU Georgetown Wisconsin Rutgers, Oklahoma State Penn State, Miami, Virginia.Tech, Virginia, Wake Forest etc..

So obviously, Lyles didnt stick around at VCU after freshman season and transfers down a level from VCU and Atlantic 10 to America East closer his home in MD....

A 2013 3* and 5th ranked PG in state of Maryland recruiting rankings, surfaces with game of his life at Vermont to spring upset as a 10-12 point underdog with the winning 3......then goes 9-11 from field...in NCAAs....against #1 seed UVA....

First team All America East player averaging 20PPG....sometimes players need to find their spot for playing time, but a player at this talent level can thrive....IF the player first finds playing time...

Lyles was great especially in the second half, but the little point guard number 11 had Virginia chasing instead of defending. For a guy that rarely looked for his shot he totally controlled the game. He caused Virginia’s defense to be two steps too slow closing out.

Mauer dominated the tempo and was a 1 man press breaker....if UVA could have gotten a lead and played zone, likely a much different outcome...once they trailed and had to chase the little guy, big problems...!

Truly, I never thought I would see a 16 seed beat a 1 seed in my lifetime

That may have been the single Greatest halfcourt offensive performance I ever saw. Their floor spacing was perfect, especially critical given how much bigger and quicker UVA was.

How bout UMBC to the sweet 16

Umbc was 188 in kenpom, now 166.

To put in context.....much better than all the dogs we beat (and didn’t beat) in our OOC.

When u look at the big picture it is a huge upset, but not a SHOCKER.

I think one guy was out.It still should never have happened. Obviously they took UMBC lightly and did not come in prepared. I did not feel sorry for Virginia but I did for their coach. He spoke to the press after the game and simply said we stunk. He praised UMBC and their coach and stood up like a real character guy.

those tears from UVA fans in the crowd were a bit over the top. Going through 27 years of being a RU is experiencing losing , losing a game in the first round of the NCAA too bad. Get over it.
Virginia is a unique basketball program that depends primarily on defense to win games. It surely has been a successful approach winning the ACC Tournament and being ranked number one in the country. At the same time in the NCAA Tournament where there is less time to prepare for opponents ,Virginia had a bad game defensively and simply lacked the offensive fire power to match baskets on a sustained basis. There also is the factor of Virginia players maybe not respecting the opponent which can set the stage for unexpected upset results.

For years it seemed that UMBC had a real identity / image challenge - While not the challenge of "IUPUI"- the four letter acronym still always seemed awkward (not a lot of schools can pull off the 4 letter label - yes UCLA does but FGCU ? UNCC? & other just don't spring off the page)
Of course the full name - "University of Maryland - Baltimore County" was cumbersome & had a sort of 'community college' ring to it.... what D-1 university has "county" in their name ?

They really deserved better - it is a rising school (with approx12,000 undergrad & 2,000 grad students) on a 500 acre modern campus - with lots of fresh & first rate facilities - and easy access to Baltimore & DC

Figured it was only a matter of time before they hired some imaging consultant - and worked on something with more 'sizzle' more rapid recognition . Maybe do like UNCC - who has tweaked their promotional approach and while they did not change the name of the university - they utilize just "Charlotte" on uniforms and in many promotional ways - similar to how the flagship SUNY schools now headline the city in their name more than the long official name - "Buffalo", "Albany", "Binghamton" & "Stonybrook". - No doubt that various 'experts' would have been willing to conduct numerous focus groups, surveys & produce elaborate strategic plans & style manuals directed toward how to overcome challenges and build broader recognition for this institution known as "UMBC" -

Ah - but a bunch of student athletes in short pants putting a ball in a hoop just executed the most amazing identity / visibility transformation possible! Now - "UMBC" is on everyone's lips - and will be for years to come!

Got to figure that the UMBC admissions department is going to see a dramatic uptick in their work load over the next few years - this is the kind of increase in visibility and name recognition that would be almost impossible to buy. This will have a broad general impact - as it will put the school on the radar screen for many many more prospective students. There will be lots more interest in becoming a 'Retriever' at - UMBC -

The retriever mascot is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the state dog of Maryland. There is a statue of a retriever known as True Grit that stands in front of the Retriever Activities Center (RAC). UMBC's costumed mascot has been known both as True Grit and Fever.

That's why they play the game:)

Did Virginia have players out injured?
Their sixth man was out with a broken hand. To me that doesn't matter. They are the ACC champ. They had only lost three games coming in to the tournament, just one in conference. They should be able to lose three starters and still beat UMBC.

Me either but never gave UMBC a shot-----congrats to those kids.

They now have 1 more ACC win than Pitt.

UNCC is my undergrad alma mater. I can tell you that going with Charlotte for athletics while keeping the official university name UNC Charlotte has just caused more confusion. The way the SUNY schools did it is much better - University of Albany, University of Buffalo, University of Stony Brook, Binghamton University and then it states a State University of New York. A number of students and alumni are pushing to go with University of Charlotte, but the current chancellor doesn't care for the idea. Hopefully it is something the next chancellor is open too.

University of Baltimore would be the obvious choice, but after that win maybe the UMBC acronym is the way to go. In the age of social media and texts, maybe acronym schools will be more popular.

@RU_Planning
They probably don't want to be known as the University of Baltimore because of all the murders and crime associated with Baltimore. They are in Catonsville way out in Baltimore County almost not in Baltimore County.

At least now they might be able to shake the U Might Be a College label.
