Horrible Carli Lloyd t-shirts

well technically it is true. The common US fan did not know her name before the world cup.

It seems to me to be a takeoff on the "zero-to-60" theme, meaning that she went from zero to becoming a hero very quickly. I doubt they'd post an insult like you're thinking when marketing a t-shirt to people who love the sport. That would be just bad business.

100% not true. Those stars on her jersey mean something.
She wasn't a household name before the world cup now she's getting there. There are many people that tune into the world cup because the US is playing not because they follow the women's soccer league. For those people, they would have no idea who Carli Loyd is until her world cup performances. So zero to hero is apt.

Posters on here are a little too sensitive at times, taking anything and everything as a slight whether imagined or not. [pfftt]

She played in 3 World Cups and won 2 gold medals in 2 Olympics.

She's been on the USNT for 10 years, and she has won top player awards during that time.

Everyone who follows women's soccer, even if it is only for the Olympics and the World Cup knows who she is.

Just because you just found out about her doesn't mean that everyone else is just like you.

She was def known before the world cup. She has so many big game winning goals. Not many people follow women's soccer that is for sure but she is like a top 10 all time goal scorer in women's soccer for the US.

I've known about her for quite a while since she played at RU. Winning a couple of world cups and gold medals doesn't make you a household name to the layman. It takes multiple repeat efforts in spectacular fashion for that to occur. This past world cup proved that.

Only someone with some real insecurities would take that as a slap to Lloyd or RU (I'm guessing since someone mentioned that it was probably a Syracuse fan). You guys have got to be kidding me.

The guy was trying to come up with a catchy slogan to sell shirts. He failed miserably, but that doesn't mean he was trying to insult anyone. Report him to US Soccer?????????? Seriously, dude you have issues.

Of course it is insulting. They are saying before this she was a zero. The expression "zero to hero" (which is a trite expression to begin with) implies someone was a loser, or a nothing, and then they became a hero through some combination of a great act and/or being in the right place at the right time. Its used to describe an unlikely hero. The expression has nothing to do with popularity or whether people have heard of her.

Carli was a damn fine soccer player before this. In no way was she a zero. She was just doing what she does. I'm not sure how anyone can defend calling a two-time gold medal winner a "zero."

Someone should report the guy. I'm sure none of that stuff is licensed.

Zero is definitely insulting......

Are there any decent shirts out there? Does Rutgers have one for her?

Zero isn't insulting in the spirit in which it was meant. Is an Indy car "a zero" when it is at the starting line, or is it merely the starting point? Carli could't score before the game started--she went from the beginning of the game to hero in no time flat, so it works. The problem is people reading into it something that isn't there. Go figure, we here in NJ find something negative in someone's attempt to honor Carli and sell some t-shirts.

As for your question, Scarlet Fever had a pretty cool one when I was there yesterday, but they didn't have smalls on the floor when I was there--just mediums and larger sizes. I was going to buy one for my sister in a small, and will probably stop back in to see if Steve got more in.

Except that has nothing to do with what the expression means. "Zero to hero" is not a new expression. It has nothing to do with a starting line or the beginning of a game. It is used to describe a nobody, or a nothing, who becomes a hero. Pretty simple stuff. Your were a zero, now you are a hero. I'm sure the person making the shirt has no comprehension of what it means. If they were familiar with the expression, they would know that it doesn't apply in this case at all.

Urban dictionary is always a good reference source:
zero to hero
the definition is split in to two parts
zero: being a loser, someone with no aspirations or goals
hero: being amazing person who does what they please and makes people want to be them; the ultimate in someone being an all around great person
Wow that boy went from zero to hero in a matter of minutes!

And if you don't think that's offensive, check out the #2 definition --- NSFW.

As of now Scarlet Fever is NOT allowed to sell the shirts. We had 3/4 shirts from the first batch that was for the parade. Perhaps a problem because Carli hasn't authorized the use of her name in conjunction with RU?? We had hoped to make a handful as fans have been asking for them.

Fair enough, but even if the designer of the t-shirt went with the colloquial usage of the phrase, it is interesting how we around here focus strictly on the "zero" part and miss totally on the "hero" part. To each his/her own, but where one finishes is more important than where one starts. And for the record, just as "zero" may be overblown, so is "hero." Carli's a national treasure, but heroes are in a different league altogether.

I agree.

That's not what technically means and anyone who watched the last Word Cup or any of the Olympics already knew who she was. She was on the cover of Sports Illustrated for their pre-World Cup edition.

Meh, probably a Sadexcuse fan.

This may have some merit. I don't think people realize just how miserable those upstate New Yorkers really are. A Jersey Girl who went to Rutgers dominates on the worldwide stage...they are such a##holes they'd find a way to downplay it. Then try and tell us that the success of US Women's Soccer somehow translates back to Jim Brown and Long Island some way or another.
