How come Quanzell Lambert is not a starting linebacker for us?

With Lambert it's more about slow reaction. My cousin was a running back for a rival team and told me this. He said Lambert had poor football fundamentals. Said in college he won't be good because all really has is size. But he also said Greg Webb was a backfield disrupting - hard hitting force. Really wish we had Webb lol

This description makes him sound like George Johnson.. a physical specimen at Rutgers who seemed to play with his "head down". He'd beat his opposing OL.. but not seem to "see the ball" to make the play.

You know what George Johnson does now? NFL.

Keep working Quanzel !

How is it BS?

Ray Rice (3*) better Rutgers career than Kordell Young.
Steve Beauharnais (3* LB) and Alex Silvestro (3* DE) better career than Manny Abreu whether you want to count him as LB or DE.
Kaleb Johnson (3*) better career than Art Forst.
Joe Martinek (2*) better career than Mason Robinson.
Juwann Jamison (3*) directly BEAT OUT Savon Huggins.
I think if you get on the playing field, you are a success as a player. You selected the best 3 stars we ever had but I looked at one year and you can count on 6-7 2-3 stars that never got on the field. Every year we have 6-7 2-3 stars that never see the field.

OK...George Johnson...EXCELLENT example. He was a very solid DE on our 2006 team...best defense in school history...but you just referenced him playing in the NFL which makes people think of him being much better than he was in college when in the same post you highlighted what held him back from truly being a superstar while on the Banks.

I agree with this. But you can't judge Flood's 2 and 3 star players yet (except for kids like Bedell and Sam Blue for obvious reasons) fair enough? I mean sure there will be guys who don't pan out but there will be plenty that do.

2 things.

1. Your cousin was wrong. QL is a good player for us.

2. What D1 school does your cousin play for?

2012-5 4 stars or better, 2011-4 4 stars, 2010-2 4 stars, 2009-4 4 stars, 2008-3 4 stars, and 2007- 3 4 stars. Hafley is 2012. Less bust than 2 or 3 stars. I don't know if Savage or Shuler are bust since Savage is in the NFL and Shuler is playing for NW

More importantly only two 4 star recruits have committed to RU since that 2012 class.

I thought the gave up on him a little too quickly as a MLB. Speed at LB is important particularly in the defense RU likes to play, I am a little tired of seeing underweighted DL struggle against strong OL. This will become more acute in the BIG. If Battle signs in Feb you wonder if he will stay at LB since he seems to have similar measurables as Lambert. Trying to think who are last really good LB was that considerable size. I am talking 6-3 or better and 235 or 240lbs. We seem to have a tendency to move those guys up and then bring someone who we recruited as a S up to the LB position.

Many, many programs move players up for speed/athleticism.
Corners go to safety.
Safeties go to linebacker.
Linebackers go to defensive ends.
Defensive ends become tackles.

This has been going on in the college game for decades. And yes, successful programs do it all the time.

Mike, you know you were trying to knock the rating system. Why did you have to mention his 4 star rating and the comment that 99% knows that high rating does not guarantee success.

Look at the listing of the 4 stars and it's proves that 80% of the time they will be successful.

lol Rutgersdave you are way mis-interpreting what is being said.

I brought up the fact that he was a 4 star FOR THE EXACT REASON that I would think since he was a 4-star recruit that he would likely STAY at the position he became a 4-star recruit at.

And I made the comment that a high rating does not guarantee success because it DOESN"T GUARANTEE SUCCESS. It makes it more likely, but doesn't guarantee it.

The point was that being moved around in college may not be an indication of what your chances are for the NFL. And that if you keep developing your body, mind and game it can still happen.. the NFL that is. Cases are rare, but they happen.

We all wondered why George Johnson wasn't a star here... just like this thread is wondering why Lambert isn't a star LB. The NFL is still possible for him... whether or not he becomes a star on the DL.

Very good point! I am excited to see what Lambert does this year

Probably was hit by the same curse that affected William Beckford and Manny Abreu (other 4-star LBs turned DEs): someone else played the position better and switching positions offered the best opportunity for playing time.
In Beckford's case someone else played the position better only after he tore his knee up in his rs frosh season. Beck's game at LB was predicated on quickness and speed. His knee injury was severe enough that it took enough away from the best part of his game and they moved him to DE. Shame what happened to Beck...he was an absolute STUD in High School at LB and would have been the same in college if not for the knee...but it's a brutal game and that's the price that many pay.
