Hungry Like The “WOOLF!” Appreciation Thread

Too early to suggest some type of Woolfolk specific response from the crowd when he makes a good play? Howl? "wolf, wolf" (probably ends up sounding like "woof, woof)?

Everything except the rebounding. Woolfolk was good with that but allowing 40% offensive rebounding rate is scary.
That has to get cleaned up. That was the one big negative from last night. Well, and the foul shooting regression.

Wolf has a very good sense of what he can and can’t do at this level, and plays within himself, not trying to do too much. He has a very mature game for a freshman who wasn’t fully committed to basketball in high school.

Our rebounding issues are concerning, but should improve some when Caleb and Paul get back. Cliff and Mag do not box out at all, just trying to get rebounds off athletic ability. Cliff is also often out of position chasing blocks instead of staying at home. If we rebound like we have the last couple of games against better teams it will be very difficult to win.

Cliff's defense has been driving me insane this season. He goes for way too many blocks that he has no chance at and leaves the back side wide open for an easy putback or at least an offensive rebounding.

What drives my crazy is when a opposing player is already double teamed and Cliff still runs over, leaving the basket completely unguarded.

Looking at DREB #s and comparing them to last year

Spencer 10.1% (Caleb 16.5%)
Cliff 22.8% vs 23.0%
Hyatt 14.4% vs 17.7%
Mag 14.2% vs 10.0%
Paul 6.7% vs 10.7%
Simpson 5.0% vs (Geo 5.6%)
Dean 4.6%?!? vs 14.4%

Wolf 18.6%

Caleb is going to help a lot.

Paul, Caleb, Spencer, "Mr. 4" , Cliff will be at worst and average defensive rebounding team.

If you grew up playing basketball with a peach basket, you grew up with coaches telling you to shift from defending your man to defending the passing lane while your teammates press a double team. The metrics must say big men should run to the scrum because it is that way all over college ball. Turnovers and fast break points are at a premium. Cliff is doing as instructed. Like seeing guys pull up for a tres on a fast break, it's hard to watch but now the right thing to do.

This RU team wants points off turn overs. They're getting the steals. They need to improve the fast break. Hyatt is the guy who is getting down stream when it should be Simpson or Miller (God help us). When Caleb gets back we really need to focus on capitalizing on turnovers. Could be this teams calling card if Pikes gets it right.

Your first sentence is a very fair point. This is a Woolfolk thread and I shouldn't have taken it in another direction.

So to stay on topic I like that he does a lot of the little things well. Just needs to iron out the turnover bug but I could see him being a Zed Key type. Different body types but they have a similar sort of game, I think.
I agree, and I’d argue Woolfolk has even more defensive potential

If Hyatt was a little less selfish and Woolfolk was a little more selfish, we’d all be better off.
Pikiell is working on Woolf being more confident. He doesn't lack confidence, he just doesn't yet realize how good he is and how good he will be. It will come. I said last night that he is going to be my favorite player in the not-too-distant future. His speed and footwork are top shelf, and my guess is he is going to be our best finisher around the rim. He also shuts down passing lanes with his length, so the stat sheet won't fully account for what his presence on the court accomplishes.

But he isn’t play the passing lane, he is trying to make wild blocks jumping over his teammates. The only thing the opponent needs to do it toss the ball in the direction of the basket, because our guys are all out of position and easy layups or dunks are available at the hoop. Doesn’t hurt us against Rider, but better teams will take advantage of this.

I read a book called Range that did a deep dive into the "10,000 hour" theory. Obviously a big part of that is the debate of specializing in 1 sport vs. playing a variety of sports in your youth. I often think about this when I see guys like Woolfork. I'd imagine his football background has played a role in his footwork, vision, and awareness. He's a gamer.

Patrick Ewing supposably played a lot of soccer growing up.

His HS team had a Top 100 kid on it and another high scoring guard that went to the MAC (I think Ohio). His HS game tape really showed some basic post moves, but when they're against HS kids, it's hard to see if he's moving fast or just looked methodical.

He also played football (we all know this), but this might be the 1st 9 to 12 month period where he didn't dedicate himself from June to November on football.

He looks thinned out and more like a true power forward. I would never say a poor mans former Purdue forward, Trevion Williams, but the comp makes sense. Williams played HS ball at over 300 lbs coming out of Chicago and Purdue and Matt Painter offered him anyway.

Woolfork doesn't have the athletic ability of Williams, but in another year or so, he could be very close in terms of that type of weapon.

He is B1G body capable and offers another post up offensive player, which is the baseline to running so many offensive sets.

RHJ, Mulcahy and Caleb were ideal post up guys, while Cliff got better at it last year. Now we have almost an entire roster, including Mag and Hyatt, who can bully-ball a smaller defender to score. What makes Woolfork so valuable is he has shooting touch to the FT line, so he's not limited to being a post or "on the block" player....if those other players can post up, he can cut to the basket and score, he has excellent hands.

He has a baseline shooting touch.

He has a mid range touch.

He has a decent looking FT stroke.

He is a fundamentally sound player on both ends of the floor and is clearly worth 14 to 18 minutes a game right now.
It's Woolfolk*

Completely agree on the thinned out. I've mentioned this a few times but he really looks to have slimmed down and transformed his body from HS tape. He has more of a bball body now and it has made him a more athletic and explosive athlete that didn't show up on his HS tape

I can see some Williams comp although I think you have it wrong in terms of athleticism. Wolf is much more athletic IMO. Williams wasn't a high flying explosive great athlete. He was super skilled with some of the best post moves I've ever seen at the college level along with his passing ability

Mag and Hyatt identical DREB. Not the major gap you were pushing

Dean.... wtf man... he needs to get it together. Wolf has already passed him in my eyes but that stat with Pike as your coach is not going to earn you minutes
