I think (HOPE) Schiano is negotiating HARD

which is why we're getting reports of him as the next coach. I hope we can get this done, but potential sticking points could include salaries for assistants, and the commitment to build a state of the art football facility, which is what he wanted included during the last stadium expansion.

If they can't come to terms, they'll go after Cristobal hard. This is how I interpret the situation.

I feel happy, because both fit the profile of coaches who can be successful here.

Who do you think would attract the best assistant coaches?

GS is the more established name, but notorious dick.

I hope you are right. Giving GS time to get staff commitments, and funding for said staff.

Lets not forget GS bail out at a very critical time just before signing day which led to the signing of Flood.
Was I the only one that got tired of GS saying we had a young team after every lost?
Or the fact when he was asked why he did not make any changes at half time when games were going bad he said that there was not enough time to make any changes at half time, this is the person you want to lead the way?

GS, without a doubt, would attact the best assistants. but with him, you accept the good and the bad. He's going to lose assistants, year after year, because people don't like being driven so hard. Its like marriage.

One thing I'd look forward to, is him slinging back the mud at all those aholes that trash us on the recruiting trail. Flood was too much of a nice guy. sometimes you have to get dirty.

Salaries apparently will NOT be a "sticking point."
Nuts - what are you hearing. Any truth to Schiano? At the end of the day the current crop of prospects leaves me a little underwhelmed. I think Schiano can bring us back to a healthy dose of 7 to 9 win seasons - the others I am not so sure. At the end of the day winning the B1G east is going to take miracles but can one of these guys be the Mark Richt of the B1G east for Rutgers. If they can, I have to admit that is success by most measures.

agreed that salary won't be the issue. but what schiano will likely want is significant commitment. as long as he's reasonable, it'll get done, imo.

All fair points. But I also remember us being very prepared for all but a handful of games, having an identity (tough fast defense and great specials), winning big games, etc. I felt pride when he was the coach. And, yes, I remember the WTF losses too.

Just because Barchi said money will not be an issue?

This is just not true. If Schiano isn't named the coach it will be because of money.

If Schiano doesn't have any other options he might come back for less just to get back in.

My gut tells me he'll have other options, though.

I don't know if this is true. He might demand a ton of improvements like stated above. Salary is one thing but Greg would have to share the new facilities development with others this time.

You don't know what you're talking about (didn't we discuss this yesterday...). No, we're not going to spend $5M for a HC, however, there is plenty to spend for a proper B1G staff right now. Enough to make almost all of us here very happy.

I understand Schiano would bring in Tom Coughlin as a coordinator.

I too would rather see a solid list of candidates get interviewed, first, but understand if Greg is brought in immediately. I wouldn't let it play out for long, however, either you're in, or you're not, and let us know within 72-hours (as some have mentioned is the case...).

i think they specifically targeted these two, as there would be minimal change involved. Both are very familiar with our culture, and are a fit, imo. If its one of these two, i'd be satisfied.

I don't know what I'm talking about yet you ignored half of my post from yesterday lol.

If money wasn't an issue the past 2 years like you insist then Flood would have been canned earlier in the Fall.

Please list he names of the donor(s) who have already made a pledge to the new coach and how much they have pledged. Or how much Rutgers money Barchi is willing to use.

If you can't then pretty sure you know just as much as me.

Money will always be an issue with Rutgers. That doesn't mean it's not an issue that can't be overcome, but it's most certainly an issue.

I think this could play out like this but if he goes with another option that probably mean Rutgers didn't offer up enough for him and his staff.

I may have missed something yesterday/last night, if I did, sorry. Anyway, you're barking up the wrong tree(s) my friend: This isn't about "donors" right now (the firing of Flood/Julie and hiring of a new AD, HC, and PROPER B1G staff...). This was about the $$$ always being available if deemed 100% necessary by those in charge.

Several posters here think Schiano is not considering RU...that it's all smile and mirrors...anyone care to chime in who might have solid information?

Sounds like Rhule/Fleck/Golden/Schiano/Cristobal to me, though I admit I am not super blown away with these folks...but they are all leaps and bounds ahead of KF.

Question...maybe a stupid one...do we know of any coaches that actually want to come here, versus using us as a bargaining chip?

Just curious....

I'm with Nuts...money is not an issue.
I'm hearing there 2-2.5m for coaching...excluding head coach....so this will get a good supporting cast.
HC salary could be fluid...depending who is talking.

Smile and mirrors- what the hell does that mean?

anyone who actually knows, isn't going to say. yes, its a risk that our offer may be leveraged into an offer elsewhere. it goes with the territory.

BTW - if you've even remotely paid attention to Barchi, since he arrived OTB, I think it's safe to say he's a guy who IS NOT going to make a public statement, as such, without knowing he's 100% accountable for it.

Like not watching the video tape of Rice? Barchi isn't accountable to anybody but Christie so he can say whatever he wants and never be held accountable for it.

Listen I hope I'm wrong but I think until we see who they hire as HC and staff it's too early to actually say money not an issue and a non-factor. If we actually go out and get our #1 choice and give him a solid staff to work with then I'm wrong. But if we settle for our #2 or #3 choice because other schools outbid us for who we initially targeted or we don't throw out $ for a legit staff then money is still holding us back.

What an odd thing to hope for. If I was going to hope anything at all along those lines, I guess I'd hope he's negotiating flaccid because the OP's alternative is a little creepy.

Schiano is only going to be interested in the job if he's sure RU is ready to make a real commitment to compete in the B1G with the likes of Ohio State and Michigan. In other words, it's just "show-me-the-money-for-my-salary" but also to pay for the upgrades in assistants and facilities he thinks RU needs to compete at an elite level.

yup, which is why he's #1 in my book.

Barchi told the players that a new coach will be hired quickly. Barchi told the players that money will not be an issue with the new hire, according to a person familiar with the situation.

According to a SL report. Since they seem to not like anyone, I'm guessing this is true.

I don't think so. RU has leverage this time around. Plenty of coaches out there willing for an opportunity and resume for P5 position...Here's what I HOPE happened.

Barchi's call to Schiano:

RB: Greg, this is Barchi. In about a week, Rutgers is embarking in a new direction in our athletic dept and as such, will be conducting a national search for an AD and a proven coach. Given your credentials and past experience in elevating our program...

GS: I'm interested.

RB: Let me finish. So, given your experience and expertise within our program, I was thinking IF we were to make you an offer for a return...

GS: I'm interested.

RB: Ok. In a nutshell, here's the deal. 3 year, $3 million/year + incentives based on W/L, APR, etc etc, plus $3 million for your choice of assistants. You are to report and follow EXACT procedures laid out by the new Athletic Director, furthermore...

GS: No problem, I'm interested.

RB: Furthermore, that Athletic Director, who by the way is Pat Hobbs, would be writing up your contract with all the terms and conditions IF you were to be interested and...

GS: I'm interested.

RB: Glad to hear that you're interested. I'll run this by the new AD, who will draft a preliminary contract on what we just discussed and you should have it by Sunday, 11/29.

GS: OK, let me discuss with my wife and...

RB: Given recruiting considerations and national signing day fast approaching, we need an definitive answer within 48hrs. Should we not hear from you, we will assume we couldn't come to an agreement and exercise our option to look for someone else who might be. Thanks for your time and expressed interest.

Click.

Someone on Schiano's and Flood's staff confirmed most of what everyone here said. Schiano has been offered and the sticking points are not his salary, but the commitment to the other intangables, like facilities, assistant salaries, etc. he has 36 hours from yesterday am, meaning sometime today they either have a deal or move on.

If what is being discussed in this thread is true then that would suggest that the SI article last year about Schiano changing is not true. It would mean that he is still the same micro manager and power freak that he always was.
