Illinois thoughts

Daniels only played 28 minutes and he is at fault and played poorly? In short time in as many rebounds as anybody out there. Turnovers no worse than those by the other guard which actually killed us even more so as at crucial time. Little bit of perspective please instead of witch hunt.

if Goode took Daniels minutes we win this game. I am VERY confident of that.

Boo Hoo. EJ is a bad coach and he's not the leader we need to turn the program around. You can bury your head in the sand all you want, but we all know how this story will end. We might as well turn to the last page and get on with it.

I think if you think another coach is coming here who will turn this program around, you are the one with your head in the sand. Turning this disaster around is a 2 coach job. The first will be consumed in the process, because it is impossible to recruit at a high level for more than 1 maybe 2 years when there are no wins to show for it. Recruits want results immediately, and we are too depleted to get that done.

I don't think Eddie is a long term solution, but he seems to be exactly what we need right now...which is someone who can keep the kids playing hard even though the losses are piling up. We will see how it pans out over the rest of the season, and in the offseason if he can keep the roster together.

Daniels is a turnover machine but he does contribute. Goode is not an option at this point.

I also am happy that Nigel will replace Daniels. And like someone else said it sucked we lost but Sanders and Laurent are fun to watch.

A hard fought folklore type game at the RAC tonight where it was a shame that anyone had to lose. Filled with drama and the Sanders miss, rebound and then swish of a 3 while falling flat on the ground to send the game into a second overtime was the most dramatic sequence at the RAC since the Gary Waters years..

2 thoughts real quick:

1) have you forgotten about the Mitchell game vs Nova?

2) Sanders is the man. The "man" that we've needed on so many teams, these last 2+ decades, who would have done the things to win the games to maybe have gotten us into an NCAA tournament or two.

EJ did a great job with recruiting last year, landing both Sanders and Laurent (both of whom were McDonalds All American nominees) and Freeman (Top 20 JUCO player). Goode was a project, and Johnson didn't pan out. Overall, it was a strong year.

The problem is that it wasn't followed up this year. If the 2016 class was as strong or stronger than 2015, there'd be a lot more optimism for the future. While I hope Thiam/Dailey/Tripp/TBD all have great success here - unless we pull in an All American for that fourth spot, it appears to be a step back from the level of player we pulled in last year who ha smade an immediate contribution (Sanders/Laurent/Freeman).

We only have one schollie open for 2017 - if Freeman gets a medical redshirt, we have none (barring any transfers).

Recruiting is about consistency. Getting one great class can't change a program's fortunes - it needs to be followed up with continually improving classes, or you just get a flash of a good season or two before falling back to where the program was.
True but only great established programs reload every year. If we did it the last 10 years we would have made the NCAAS many times. But 10 years of losing make it hard to recruit but still Eddie sold Corey to come here, and also got Laurent and Freeman. I really believe a lot of the posters are short changing Freeman . If healthy he will get 20 a game at least half of which from Corey dropping dimes.
Hard to tell from highlights and I reserve judgment on a player untilI have seen them live, but Dailey reminds me of CJ Fair of Syracuse and a very unselfish good passer. So Eddie might not follow up a class like Corey's , including Nigel in there, with another as good but only the perennial top 25 programs do that

Not last night but when he drives to the hoop for layups and hits his 10-12 foot jumper when he plays under control. He did it for a few games but for a senior not enough.
However, I hate to say it but to me, it was obvious that he sulked because he didn't start. Came in immediately had 2 lazy passes for turnovers, hardly played defense, had a block and a few rebounds but was disinterested. He only played at the end when Mike fouled out and made things worse by acting like a spoiled kid, that if you do not call a play for me, I am checking out..He basically handed the ball back to Corey on every weave or as soon as he dribbled up, and then hid in the corner. Corey was exhausted and needed help and Daniels didn't want to give it bc he was pissed at Eddie. Not a good teammate.

Here is another note, from Jordan's post-game interview: The team has not even had enough players to practice, Jordan basically said. Tough to improve defensive and offensive sets with just low-impact walk-throughs ... which is basically what the team is limited to.

He was asked how the team might be affected with a relatively short turnaround with a Saturday road game, due to the 3OT and high energy game they just played. Jordan said it should not be a problem, since the team has not been able to do anything but low-impact practices: Some drills (I think he specifically mentioned passing and shooting, and some other drills), and some Five on Zero walk-throughs, is basically all they have been able to do because of the injuries. He said ordinarily the coaching staff would not worry about injuries during practices - you just practice hard. But he said the reality of this season is that they HAVE to concern themselves with injuries in practice, and that has put real limits on practice.

Remember, that in addition to the players out now (and those who had been out or limited (Laurent for 3 weeks, Freeman for a week or so was limited due to his ankle, though he kept playing), I bet Lewis is extremely limited in practice - have to save him for the games.

For those who complain that the players have not improved during the season, that the sets have not improved, etc. ... MAYBE at least SOME of that is the inability to actually run proper practices to to the injuries. Maybe - not surely, but maybe.

And if you cannot run full-speed practices, how does that hurt game prep?

A few thoughts:

1. Corey can become King on the banks in due time.

2. Mike Williams is the type of player the program has sorely missed. He will be a very important player as an upper classmen and will develop. Bad turnovers down the stretch though.

3. Can't wait for Daniels to graduate.

4. Eddie needs to get us in better set plays down the stretch.

5. Eddie had Daniels inbound instead of Corey for the first time all game in either OT or regulation and he turned it over. WHY!

6. Lewis stepped up inside and rebounded well.

7. It's nice to have a guard with a mid range jumper again - Grier.

8. Laurent is a great get and if he develops his technical skills in offense he will be very good.

9. Eddie pulled a recruiting miracle with this freshmen class that should not have been possible and I applaud him for it.

10. Johnson will be an upgrade for the guard position but we will be thin next year.

11. No qualms with foreman. Didn't finish around the basket on a night where everyone else could. It happens.

12. A strong off season workout regimen to improve physically will go a long way.

Good post, I agree with almost all of your 12 points. I'm a big Williams fan. I also believe, last night notwithstanding, that Foreman will be a contributor.

wow you are projecting a lot. First of all no one in the Big 10 is averaging. 20ppg. I think Hill from Illinois is at 18.5 ppg and only the top 6 avg more than 16ppg. I like Freeman but he isn't dropping 20 a game...more like 13-14 especially with Sanders being a big scorer himself. You are projecting CJ Fair for Dailey..wow, well if that was the case Syracuse and bigger programs would be after him. I think that really is going out on a limb. Dailey might seem very limited time with Laurent doing so well, he is going to behind Williams/Johnson as well for any playing time

Penn State has the #2 recruiting class in the Big 10 next year. Teams that make the tournament have back to back top classes or they have a coach who overachieves time and time again. See McCaffery, see Beilein, see Bo Ryan. RU still will probably be in the bottom 2 or 3 talent wise in this conference

It's not about reloading - but continuing to have strong classes. Not elite classes, just strong classes. Hopefully Tripp and Dailey are going to be amazing under-the-radar guys, but right now they have no stars and no real offers other than us - they are as likely to be at Goode's level as anyone else. Thiam at least has been evaluated enough to get some stars next to his name, but this class isn't really moving the needle much. FHJ was a terrible coach, but he brought in good classes every year (most of whom transferred... but he still managed to bring in talent, even though the product on the court wasn't good).

And 20 a game for Freeman? You're on crack. Only 7 guys in the last 15 seasons in the Big Ten have averaged 20 a game. He may be our best player... but he's not going to be the conference's best player.
