I'm Jealous of St. John's

A great coach with Tons of NIL means a winner. We have a good coach and No NIL so we get what we just got.
We have a mediocre coach and enough NIL to win with if that coach could properly evaluate talent in the portal and knew how to run a functional offense. And we have fans who are happy with that tremendous 'success'. So we get what we just got. And keep getting.....

this was supposed to be a year where we made competing programs jealous of us, not the other way around

Our NIL is shit and you know it. It was just enough to get NO power 5 transfers. Pike didn’t become a head coach this year for the first time. It’s a new era in college basketball where kids are asking how much am I getting first before anything else is being discussed. Our NIL was enough to get division 2 players and low level division one players. That’s the facts that we see on the roster. You can evaluate all you want well but when the players are looking to get paid and you have no money to give your fu$ked. I’m sure you are another one who gave just an opinion but not a dime.

Please, stop. Take this crap to the NIL threads.

No one is asking to be a #1 seed. No one is asking for a 30 win season. No one is asking to win the Big Ten regular season or post season.

The main problems with this team were NOT NIL related.

Shack, respect your fandom, but we’ve been saying this stuff for 30 years, Sleeping Giant etc. We’re still waiting and we’re nowhere close to this program — or any other program in this downtrodden athletic department — becoming a big winner.

For hoops, this was the year to become a big winner, and Pike completely failed to capitalize on having not one but TWO generational talents. Now we have to restock the roster with (1) a coach who has severe talent evaluation deficiencies; and (2) a fanbase historically unwilling to open its pocketbooks (which means our NIL warchest will be dwarfed by probably 10 other B1G programs).

We have very little chance of becoming a big winner UNLESS we start buying good players like Michigan, Maryland, and St. John’s have done. I have no confidence that we will be able to do this.

Maybe I’m feeling overly negative and dejected after this disastrous season, but I’m having a hard time seeing any light at the end of this dark tunnel.
But it’s true.

Anything more than a pulse and it happens around here. We’ve seen it already.

We have won but haven’t WON or WON yet.

And there is is difference in all three.

We really only have to get to the WIN stage around here to see the results @Scarlet Shack is talking about.

And I’m with @Hondo77 here. Good for St. Johns. But I don’t want to be them, in the big picture…because they don’t have one.

Nice story, but Richie and Mike have stated numerous times that isn't true. There was money for a 5, but Pike stood down due to ego (Ewin) and capitulation (Lathan). There was also money for better quality players than we ended up with. Pike just misfired completely on his talent evaluations. Not to mention the advantages of the outside true NIL funding coming to Ace and Dylan, plus the Vegas NIL. And if that still wasn't enough for some reason, that was on Pike to do something about as well. I get you don't like that reality over your story, but it is reality.

Nah, those teams have had consistent success for years. They've always been around.

St. John's knows what it's like to be in the toilet and have apathy run through the program. They have felt the pain RU fans have felt. They're right up the road and have captured the market we claim we want to capture.

They have a university that understands the importance of athletics, while RU is still dealing with the enemy within. Even our own fan base.

There's a percentage of our fan base and university that would push back on the thought of hiring Pitino because he's "too slimy." Think about that. This place sucks.
Your last sentence sums it up. We never would have touched him when UL canned him.

Additionally I was a little surprised when St. John’s hired him.

This is the part that infuriates me with RU!!!

We all know we don’t have the financial support of our school or even our fans.

We all know we have been a dormant yet sleeping giant of a program across many sports in a highly talented tri-state area.

The largest issue is that we never try to innovate and do things different rather than going the safe route all the time. Why not try something completely unique and different than other schools. We need to set ourselves an apart somehow realizing we are who we are based on the above..try something different bc all the safe hires, shirt sighted aprtoaches aren’t working. Make a splash.

I say this everyone I watch out coaches as well. Like watching Schiano call running plays where he thinks we have the offensive line of Alabama. It’s the definition of insanity. Do it different.

I appreciate your sentiments, but Rutgers is a bureaucratic cesspool heavily manipulated by a corrupt state government. The idea that it will suddenly develop its own unique innovative path forward is wishful thinking.

This happens all the time. Teams that rise, fall and rise again while RU barely sticks its head above ground.

Poor St John’s is now done as Calipari and Arkansas smoked them today
At least they made the tournament! RU rarely makes the tournament and this year was its golden opportunity. Pike failed miserably. This was embarrassing as noted by several sources.

Another season where teams from NJ/NYC Metropolitan area either fail to get a NCAA bid or get knocked out after one win.

Watching today's St. John's vs. Arkansas game said everything about RU's season. I didn't see a single player on either team give less than 100% every minute.

I'm sure there was an RU game or two where that was true, but my memory of the season will be half-hearted efforts by RU players and Pikiell doing nothing about it.

Typical that someone on here would bump this trying to bring the Johnnies down.

Complete and utter nonsense of a bump. They were a 2 seed and won the Big East.

I’d give my left nut to see RU have a season like that.

The first part is false.

Relative to other B1G schools, Rutgers athletics has unprecedented support from the state and the school in the form of student fees earmarked to athletics, university transfers to the department, and direct state support to Rutgers athletics.

This support grew from $26 million in 2023 to $29 million in 2024.

No other B1G athletic program gets this level of support, not even close.

On the financial support from Rutgers fans, Rutgers' fan base is smaller the other B1G schools, so less financial support from fans should not be a surprise.

I've explained in other threads in terms of how good Pitino is as a coach and he might be the greatest basketball coach of all time, because of how much he gets out of a roster....but that St Johns roster with anyone else coaching it, was always a bubble team.....it simply is not that good and lacked shooting.

Anyone not fooled by the media market nonsense could see that, if you paid any attention to the St Johns scrimmage or exhibition game vs RU at the RAC.....today's result vs a clearly better roster and Arkansas should not be surprising....its not Marquette, Creighton and the rest of the Big East that was just not that good.

I'm going to get blasted by the Big East apologists again, but it is what it is. The separation of these leagues was being argued....Nova won the title, UConn went back to back......LOL......of course you're going to get a 1 or 2 seed playing in that conference....what is the benchmark of the middle or bottom of the league....?? There's no tests on a game in and game out basis.....

To be a serious threat in March you need to be top 20 in defense and offensive efficiency.

Their defense was always there, but their offense is horrid.

Doesn’t take anything away from the season they had, but they were never a true threat to win the title regardless of their seed.

Actually reminded me of the geo teams, but with a HOF head coach.

Announcers mentioned that the Johnnies had not played team as good athletically as Arkansas.

Do you know the last time st johns was in the ncaas compared to RU ? You're embarrassing.
