Just reinforcing what i've read on the board about the game. If Sudfeld and Howard play i think we win, if either doesn't play we are in trouble. Sudfeld helps spread the field and as a senior QB, one of the better ones in the B1G, helps the run game. If he's out likely 3rd string Danny Cameron, Cam Cameron's son, will start, and although he had decent moments against PSU, he just doesn't have the experience. If Howard plays he's just a train that won't quit, gaining 2-3 yards per run, always falling forward, but if Sudfeld doesn't start beside him you'll just load the box and force us to throw. They compliant each other very well, and although their backups are suitable they just don't have the same juice. Granted those backups we've seen play have went against very good OSU and PSU defenses, i just don't like what i've seen out of them. Cheers to a good game and hope those that travel enjoy Bloomington, its a beautiful place especially this time of the year.

The way the "coach talk" went he was implying that, "If Sudfeld can't go the responsibility falls on the shoulders of Cameron and Boudreau." seems to imply strongly that Nate Boudreau will be back up (#2) i.e. that Cameron will start.
Sudfeld ankle sprain is it a High ankle as they are the worst and do take a long time to heal and they say he has problems planting his foot on throws, again indicating maybe a high ankle issue.
I am sorry for the kid, his last year, but I would rather he sit out this game for his health. RU -D does come hard at QB passing, and can do damage. Even Cook said he was hit a lot.
As for Howard he is good if healthy, but like you said without Sudfeld, Howard will have red targets all over him. yes we will crowd the line.

Agreed. So since i haven't watched Rutgers at all, what do you guys do well and what do you struggle at?

I'm still debating whether I'm going or not, as I love Bloomington and have many friends there and up Rt. 37 in Indy/Carmel. Favorite restaurant is Grazie's, favorite coffee shop is the Scholars Inn, and I had a spur-of-the-moment dinner (at Grazie's) a few years ago with the owner of the popular sports bar (I forget the name, but it's on N. Walnut somewhere near 14th)--she was pretty cool. The campus is beautiful, too. And the student union--deer lowered, that thing is huge. The music/dance/theater part of campus is really beautiful, with the fountains out front. It would be very cool if the administration tried getting IU football to a higher level, since the town and campus itself is really beautiful and you could probably recruit well to that environment.

As for the game, I think the line opened at IU giving 7ish, so my guess is they're expecting Sudfeld and Howard to play. Given the way our defense played last week against MSU, if we continue that level of play we should hold our own. Our run game will set up the passing game, and I expect our TEs to be more involved since they won't have to stay in and block a guy like Calhoun.

I hope it's a good game, and for me I'll decide Thursday if I'm heading out. It's a nice 11-hour drive this time of year, but the 90-minute flight is far more appealing.

As an aside, if Boudreau plays, every time they mention his name I'm going to be hearing Party Down South--"I'm a Boudreaux baby!!!"--and probably liking it. :-)

But you can still predict a win against us?
Sir, we've been bowling and winning for the last decade straight .. You may be underestimating your opponent this weekend. Good luck.

Up until last game we were very good at getting penalties ~10/game
We also were like ~#125 in Turnover margins.
We use to be a very good defensive team but we lost 2 good defensive coordinators (Schiano & Smith) in fact this game will show just how good we are.
We use to have a very strong defensive secondary until they all got arrested on the same day. :joy:
We have some talent but communication kills any great coverage we may have. So yes who ever is QB there will be some open shots in our secondary.
We do have a young QB (starting 5th game)who statistically out did Cook in stats, just not on the scoreboard. he is improving week by week. If he takes another step forward we can win if he falls back a step or two we may lose. Yes that is how close this can be.
Remember the first two penalties and turnovers will have a big factor along with rookie QB

Well, we have a new qb this season...with 4 1/2 games under his belt. And it showed vs. Pedd St. and Michigan St. We have three quality running backs, who sound similar to your guy Howard...except one of the three....Hicks is probably faster. We have one of the best wide outs you'll ever see....three td receptions vs. Michigan St. MSU couldn't cover him and I doubt you guys will have much luck with that. We like to run the ball though and rotate the three backs.
On defense we have numerous problems. Our best DL is out for the season. And 3/4 of our secondary got booted off of the team at the start of the season. We're very inexperienced back there, but improving. And vs. Mich. St. we actually started to blitz the qb instead of sitting back in a passive zone waiting for their guy to pick our zone apart. It worked pretty good. MSU just made some big plays in the passing game. I expect us to put pressure on whoever starts for Indiana.
Oh....and kick off to our kick returner at your own peril.
and BTW we probably lead the country in games lost vs. a backup quarterback over the last decade, so we're not hoping your starter doesn't play.

We'll I've seen the results, loss to Washington St, not so good win against Kansas. You played well it seems against an MSU team plagued with injuries but so did Purdue. I just feel a fully healthy IU at home wins against Rutgers.

Saw you guys got Carroo back, i think he was suspended?, and he scares me. We have some young corners, give up a lot of yards through the air. Sounds like it'll be an interesting game, our defense has looked good at times but tends to give up big plays. We too have had our fare share of stupid penalties that cost us. Our oline which was once seen as a strength has struggled the past two games.

If we play like we did against MSU on Saturday night, in the words of Vincent Laguardia Gamini, everything he just said is bull___!
Best guess, we were breaking in our law abiding, really green defensive backs and did not blitz much. That changed against MSU. Our DBs played very well, despite being really inexperienced. We even got an INT on Cook.
I agree what was said on our QB. He can be elusive and run when under pressure, which is a plus.
We were a penalty machine in several games, but we played a clean game against MSU.

Hoping the MSU game was not the excitement and being pumped up for our black out game against the #4 team in the country, and is a turning point for the team going forward. Hoping our game against PSU was our annual WTF game.

Even if Sudfeld does play, I think the defense game plan will be to blitz him often and wear down his injured ankle. Make him run, cut, run , cut and repeat.

You guys should have 3-4 people covering Carroo, and make sure your punter and kicker punt and kick to #1, Janarion Grant. He is fun to watch. We need to find ways to get the ball to him on offense.

How is your run defense?

You're likely right. I see us trying to run the ball and run quick route pass plays to minimize his time with the ball in his hands.

Unless Sudfeld and the running back are also stud defensive linemen, we should run all over Indiana on Saturday just like last year.

Indiana looks very good this year. If Rutgers plays like they did against MSU, then Rutgers should win, if they play like they did against everyone not called MSU this year and then Indy will take it.

This is a toss up game and a very important one at that. Whoever wins might end up bowling and whoever loses will most likely not be going to a bowl game this year considering the rest of the schedule for both teams.

Actually fairly decent. And when i say decent its because its ranked #67th compared to our almost dead last passing defense. We do well but again have problems giving up big runs.

Ehh we still have Maryland and Purdue but this game would go a long way to solidifying a bowl birth, our first since 2007.

I just reviewed stats for all your games except Ohio State--not many running yards in any of them. Will be interesting for us since we have 3 strong running backs, who are all a bit different. You guys do give up a lot of passing yards, but so do we. We are #115, and you are #125. Surprised to see Nebraska at the bottom of that ranking.

Our run defense is better than last year. Last year we had experienced CBs, but young LBs/Dline, this year young CBs but more experienced LBs/Dline. Still nothing great but our weakness is against the pass.

If you search our board you will see many posts about how we only throw short passes and not enough deep ball. We want to be a time of possession picking up small consistent yardage most of the game.

I expect it to be a competitive game that we pull the W on.

The thing against OSU is when you consider Elliot had 3 runs of 55,65, and 75 yards, 195 of his 274 yards came on 3 plays, the other 20 carries we held him to 79yards, its why i've harped on us giving up the big play.

I'm sticking my prediction of if both howard and sudfeld play and are healthy we win. Only one of the two play, its a close game we likely lose in the 4th, neither play and its a multiple TD loss. Another thing with our defense is they give up yards but have been good at creating turnovers ranking 6th in the country with a +9 TO margin, that should play into the game as well, hopefully for our sake.

If you had seen any nebraska games this year you wouldn't be surprised. Their secondary can't stop a single pass. It's why they keep losing games in the last 60 seconds.

I think this sums up the possible game outcomes fairly well. Main factor will be Sudfeld's health. Howard has looked very good but doesn't seem as dynamic as Tevin Coleman was.

Indiana released its pre-Rutgers depth chart Tuesday, with a handful of small changes. Those changes include:

- After playing in Saturday's game, quarterback Danny Cameron is on the depth chart, still behind the injured Nate Sudfeld and Zander Diamont. Diamont will not play this week, head coach Kevin Wilson said, and Sudfeld has missed the past game and a half with an ankle injury.

- Running back Andrew Wilson, who has seen time the past two games, is listed third at his position behind Jordan Howard (also battling an ankle injury) and Devine Redding.

- Ralph Green III is again listed at nose tackle after being listed at defensive tackle in Darius Latham's absence last week. Latham is back at defensive tackle, and so is Patrick Dougherty.

- True freshman cornerback Tyler Green (pictured below) has cracked the depth chart, listed behind Rashard Fant and Ben Bach.

- Linebacker (and former quarterback) Chris Covington is listed as third at strongside linebacker behind Clyde Newton and Dawson Fletcher.

I predict a Rutgers win. I haven't seen Indiana play this year, but they lost twice and they're Indiana.

Sounds like Rutgers from the last few years.

I think the OP is dead on. If Sudfield plays, IU has the advantage. If not, I give it to RU. Our defense has always struggled against good spread QBs. Sudfield is very good and will most likely will find his open WRs matched up against a safety or linebacker. I've seen it too many times. If Sudfield doesn't play or gets injured then the RU defense will send the house and create a lot of pressure.

Da_Bull, here's my (somewhat optimistic) view of Rutgers to this point.

Defense
Coming into this season, we were expecting to have a stronger defense, with a more experienced secondary and a senior Darius Hamilton anchoring what was a decent line last year. A ton of our secondary is no longer on the team, and Hamilton is injured, leaving us with just 3 guys (Longa LB, Gause LB, Mera DE) who were consistent starters last year, and some real youth and lack of depth at CB.

Things started rocky, but have been coming along. We gave up 13 points to an FCS Norfolk State team we'd never allowed to score in our history with them. We couldn't hold WSU's air raid attack and couldn't get to the QB, and our secondary largely got carved up. We couldn't stop TTFP's running attack, and didn't bring a lot of pressure on the QB. By Kansas, the defense started to find itself a little bit, and they looked much better against MSU after the bye week. Run defense is greatly improved over the first few games, and the secondary is starting to figure things out.

Austin/Wharton are both very talented CBs, but also very raw, with this being their first game experience. Hester is a transfer in at safety, and Cioffi at the other safety spot is a switch from CB this year. Kaiwan Lewis is a 5th year transfer at MLB. Neither DT was starting last year. Reps have helped all of these guys, and I think there were moments during MSU where the started to feel a little more confidence as a unit.

If the upward trajectory continues, it should tighten up more this weekend. Run defense is ahead of pass defense right now, so it would probably be more benefit to you for Sudfeld to be back than Howard (if you were only to get one) - but the pass rush has also been improving.

Offense
Coming into the season, we had to choose between two QBs, and fans were fairly evenly split between them (though I'd say the prevailing winds were pointing to Rettig). Rettig got the initial start, but it was announced the same day that Laviano was suspended for the first half. It became pretty clear that Laviano has the staff's full support, and probably would have started the first game if not for the suspension. Otherwise, we have a talented WR and RB corps, but replaced several pieces of the protection unit (OLx3, FB, TE).

Our playcalling has been frustratingly conservative, imo. Lots of short, high percentile passes have made Laviano look good on paper, but have also let opposing defenses cheat up a bit to limit YAC and bigger runs. He has aired it out a couple of times, with some success, though there are some lingering questions about his arm strength. We have the horses at WR to really stretch the field (Carroo is a beast, but there's a solid stable of receivers behind him), but we haven't really pushed that aspect of the game. Lots of theories why that is - I think the one I'm warming to right now is that our OC is trying to build a young QB's confidence by bringing him along more slowly, and our OLine is still gelling to get the protections right for slower developing deep plays (though I also think Laviano throws a bit of a softer ball than Rettig, too).

Other than Carroo, we have a lot of fresh legs at RB. Paul James hasn't been used as much this year (my best guess is that he's still not 100% healthy), but Hicks/Martin are both more than capable. The playcalling has been a bit inconsistent, though. Against WSU, we pitched the ball to the RB to run outside the tackles... over and over again. Against TTFP, we pounded it up the middle... over and over again, even though we were getting stuffed. OLine and FB have been doing better with run blocking, though, and should continue to progress.

Our offense is a bit of a journey at this point... and we're not where we want it. I think it's improving, though.

Special Teams
Please kick the ball to Janarion Grant. He'll be wearing #1. Oh, and we finally realized against MSU that blocking kicks is something we like to do... we were long overdue this season.

TL;DR

I'm kidding. I'm starting to get a certain feel that our teams mirror each other in that, your offense started off slow but is getting better, the defense was expected to be strong but has begun to sink below preseason expectations. Our defense has begun to improve after getting guys back from suspensions and offense is starting to struggle with guys getting injured. Our defense was missing several guys, 3-4 starters, 3-4 in the 2 deep, due to suspensions to start the year, our FS to injury was out 2 games, starting MLB was out 2 games, Latham our best DL missed the OSU game, but have played better than last year and seem to be improving. Offense was doing well, Howard and the online had a great first 4 games, young WRs were starting to emerge, then Howard got dinged up and our Oline has struggled, Sudfeld got dinged up and passing game has struggled.

you lost 3 times, and you're Rutgers

It says an awful lot as to how great this board is that you continue to manifest that attitude towards the team that this board is dedicated to....and are still allowed to participate in the conversation here.
What other board would allow such a thing ?
