Da_Bull, here's my (somewhat optimistic) view of Rutgers to this point.
Defense
Coming into this season, we were expecting to have a stronger defense, with a more experienced secondary and a senior Darius Hamilton anchoring what was a decent line last year. A ton of our secondary is no longer on the team, and Hamilton is injured, leaving us with just 3 guys (Longa LB, Gause LB, Mera DE) who were consistent starters last year, and some real youth and lack of depth at CB.
Things started rocky, but have been coming along. We gave up 13 points to an FCS Norfolk State team we'd never allowed to score in our history with them. We couldn't hold WSU's air raid attack and couldn't get to the QB, and our secondary largely got carved up. We couldn't stop TTFP's running attack, and didn't bring a lot of pressure on the QB. By Kansas, the defense started to find itself a little bit, and they looked much better against MSU after the bye week. Run defense is greatly improved over the first few games, and the secondary is starting to figure things out.
Austin/Wharton are both very talented CBs, but also very raw, with this being their first game experience. Hester is a transfer in at safety, and Cioffi at the other safety spot is a switch from CB this year. Kaiwan Lewis is a 5th year transfer at MLB. Neither DT was starting last year. Reps have helped all of these guys, and I think there were moments during MSU where the started to feel a little more confidence as a unit.
If the upward trajectory continues, it should tighten up more this weekend. Run defense is ahead of pass defense right now, so it would probably be more benefit to you for Sudfeld to be back than Howard (if you were only to get one) - but the pass rush has also been improving.
Offense
Coming into the season, we had to choose between two QBs, and fans were fairly evenly split between them (though I'd say the prevailing winds were pointing to Rettig). Rettig got the initial start, but it was announced the same day that Laviano was suspended for the first half. It became pretty clear that Laviano has the staff's full support, and probably would have started the first game if not for the suspension. Otherwise, we have a talented WR and RB corps, but replaced several pieces of the protection unit (OLx3, FB, TE).
Our playcalling has been frustratingly conservative, imo. Lots of short, high percentile passes have made Laviano look good on paper, but have also let opposing defenses cheat up a bit to limit YAC and bigger runs. He has aired it out a couple of times, with some success, though there are some lingering questions about his arm strength. We have the horses at WR to really stretch the field (Carroo is a beast, but there's a solid stable of receivers behind him), but we haven't really pushed that aspect of the game. Lots of theories why that is - I think the one I'm warming to right now is that our OC is trying to build a young QB's confidence by bringing him along more slowly, and our OLine is still gelling to get the protections right for slower developing deep plays (though I also think Laviano throws a bit of a softer ball than Rettig, too).
Other than Carroo, we have a lot of fresh legs at RB. Paul James hasn't been used as much this year (my best guess is that he's still not 100% healthy), but Hicks/Martin are both more than capable. The playcalling has been a bit inconsistent, though. Against WSU, we pitched the ball to the RB to run outside the tackles... over and over again. Against TTFP, we pounded it up the middle... over and over again, even though we were getting stuffed. OLine and FB have been doing better with run blocking, though, and should continue to progress.
Our offense is a bit of a journey at this point... and we're not where we want it. I think it's improving, though.
Special Teams
Please kick the ball to Janarion Grant. He'll be wearing #1. Oh, and we finally realized against MSU that blocking kicks is something we like to do... we were long overdue this season.
