Iowa Game Thread

Ran out of gas again. At least it was a much better game than Monday. Never remembered the RAC being so quiet for an entire game.

And now Greg Lewis limping off the court. Someone must have a voodoo doll of our guys out there.

Getting some tough calls tonight. Guards are moving their feet on D more than any other game I have seen and the refs are still calling them for ticky tack shit.

Notice the rebounding strategy is new tonight

Curious...
What are they doing differently?

(also, nice to hear someone above say that the assistant coaches are doing a lot of talking/coaching tonight)
Hey, maybe this board lit a fire under someone's butt!

I said this before, what kind of weight training program do we have? Foreman needs to get to 6'8" 225.

Also, watching the game tracker, it seems we are actually calling timeouts tonight.

Are we actually calling more than we usually do?
Seems like that would be a good strategy to give our guys a blow (especially when so short-handed).
Also give us time to coach 'em up a bit, and try to keep the guys focused and positive.

Laurent, he is going to be a good player and yes we missed him.

90-76

Hey - Congrats to the team.
Didn't watch it, but looks like they hung in there all night and competed.

Quick look at game stats showed we played pretty darn well.
Not sure if Iowa was just terrible tonight, or we played above average, but I'll certainly take it!

Now keep competing in every game we play, and MAYBE Eddie has a chance to come back next year (especially if he forks over a few more big checks - lol)

Again Laurent played, no offense to Justin but he needs to play 5 minutes.

Surprised to see Iowa had only a 38-33 rebounding advantage. It did seem like they got every key rebound though when they needed it to slow down any mini-run or spurt we had going.

Iowa had poor shot selection, quick shots, and played horrendous d. Hts off to your team though. Alot of that had to do with your team who certainly wanted it more and out worked us. Something certainly to work off of

That big ten money will certainly help your cause. Hope your AD is willing to use it, to upgrade the dept. It will be a big boost. At this point it just outmanned but that money will be a great equalizer. Too much talent and fertile recruiting ground in your backyard. This was exactly what the Hawks needed as I was a bit worried the nat publicity may start seeping into the egos. Good luck with the rest of your season

Thanks, would be nice to have one of our 6'10" kids able to play.

One of the best Rutgers performances of the season. The team never gave up and made a surprising number of baskets in the paint against a taller opponent. The game was won by Iowa with 3 pointers and foul shots down the stretch of the game.Although this wasn't one of Iowa's best performances, they still scored 90 points.

Losing 60-46 is a lot different than losing 90-76. Can't give up 90 points (72 possessions) and win. You can certainly score 76 and win.

Really disappointed to hear Jordan happy with the effort. No coach should ever be happy giving up 90. He should highlight how happy he was with us offensively, but say the defense was lacking in too many possessions.

He and the team are happy with a close loss and that is a loser mentality.

I am VERY happy with the way Williams Laurent and sanders played. That is what the season is about to me.

Sanders, when he was the only PG on floor, really did a phenomenal job as court general getting others involved. Mike Williams thrives when it is just he and Sanders.

Good job by our kids tonight. We lost because Iowa killed us with 3's and foul shots. We shot in the high 40's for a change which is why we kept it close. Iowa is a better team by far and probably figured this game would be a cakewalk. It was a pleasure for a change being there.

FIG...I know you are a guy that values defense. However, there are many ways to win a game. You can grind out Pitt style 59-51 victories or you can win like the recent Duke game vs. Notre Dame, 95-91. Just think if Rutgers makes some 3 pointers or other open shots to win 94-90 or even lose 90-85. Would you be happy? Probably not, because you prefer defensive battles.

Another example is the Kansas- Oklahoma game....both teams in the 90's and people are calling that a great college basketball game. I love it also because I love watching great offense as opposed to 59-55 defensive slug fests.

This game came down to what a recent game announcer said, "the team that makes their open shots wins. Iowa was 11-29 on 3's, Rutgers was 4-17 on 3's. If Rutgers manages to hit a mere 3 more three point shots and it's a tight game and who knows what happens at the end. Crowd gets into it, defensive intensity picks up....who knows, maybe an upset.

While I was pleased with the effort on the court (the last 36 minutes), some of Eddie's post game comments bothered me. Paraphrasing 'We didn't even scout Iowa's offense, it was all about us'...'we played great 40 minutes'. Umm Eddie the first four minutes the same guy had half dozen wide open looks at the basket.

Nevertheless it was nice to have moments where I could actually stand up & cheer. Laurent is a difference-maker that would be a glue guy on most B1G squads (at the very least as a developed upperclassman). Great fight by Omari Grier boxing out guys 10 inches taller on several occasions. Mike played hard as always and a hit a few shots (though stunting for the camera on the and-1 was a bit much - dude we're winless in conference). Nice game by Corey, whose game continues to develop.

Actually part about not scouting Iowa didn't bother me. The play over the past 3 games transcended being prepared to beat a certain opponent. If they spent time working on rebounding, help defense, and closing out on shooters it was worth it. Time is finite.....and we have too many problems.

Greene you are wrong tonight! The effort , ball movement, rebounding, hustle ,loose balls were all outstanding tonight. With the exception of the early minutes when we left Jok alone and he scored 11 quick points, the defense was good. Only one other time ,Uthoff, a future NBA player, hit a 3 in transition. The rest of their made shots were contested but they have good shooters. One other time a fight for a rebound took a bad bounce and went out to Jok for a 3 when we cut it to 8 in the second half. They made 11 threes and we made 4 out of 17, which was the difference in the game and most were made by their top 2 players who stepped up.. A few more makes for us and 2 less for them this game goes to the last minute.
I am especially proud of the kids tonight.

I don't want to come off as the rival fan being sanctimonious here, but after the run Rutgers has been on and after losing to Purdue by 50, I think it's a really good sign that Rutgers didn't just mail it in when they got down big early (what was it, a 15-2 start for Iowa?). Would have been very easy to just roll over, regardless of how Iowa was playing.....but they didn't. They showed fight and gave Iowa a battle for much of the game.

Fran should have went for the throat. I know Tom Davis was the 1-3-1 guru. I am assuming you play 1-3-1, I think i have seen it. 1-3-1 among other things is our kryptonite. the full court zone press would have also gotten to us.

I think it was a combination of Iowa not really having the intensity they've had lately and then Fran trying to use the quick start to just coast. The lack of defensive intensity really stood out after the recent games against MSU, Purdue and Michigan....but credit to Rutgers for not folding up and going home. If they keep playing hard, they'll clip a contender this year.

Does Jok dig in defensively most games? There were a few times it look like his legs were in mud.

Obviously RU fans would kill for him or any of your starting 5

Jok has improved dramatically on the defensive end this season. Last night was not indicative of how he's been playing lately on the defensive end.

He had a major knee injury in HS that took him from a top recruit to a marginal power conference player and he has said he's really only felt 100% since this past offseason. That's helped his quickness significantly. We'll see if last night became a trend of whether it was just one of those days. Obviously, he was pretty locked in offensively from the start.
