Is this board or fanbase prepared for 2 to perhaps 3 bowl less seasons?

How do you measure improvement? We arguably could have a better team this year, with
less wins.I am hoping to see improvement in recruiting, but just as important I hope to see the team get better as the season progresses. We did not see in the last few years.
I think the recruits will come, the wins will come, and the bowls will follow.
I think our fan base really needs to grow as much as the team needs to grow.
When looking at RU football history, the lack of commitment from the school through the years impaired the team from being competitive on a consistent level. When it comes to actually playing BIG-Time football we are really just beginning . I think we finally have the right leadership in place to build this thing right, and I really think the sky is the limit.

I believe there's a difference between being in the playoff and being in a bowl. By judging Ash so far against his 2 bad losses (OSU & UW), you are comparing us to possibly 2 of the 4 playoff teams. Yes, we are definitely 50+ points away from being in the playoff. But we only lost to Iowa by 7. I think we might just be 7 points from a bowl.

So let's see how we do against Illinois, Minnesota, & Indiana. Because UM if not for having to play OSU later is a playoff team right now too. Don't judge Ash when half our schedule is against the playoff teams.

Bowless isn't as big a concern for me. A 3-win season wouldn't surprise me. What I'm concerned about is are we as a fanbase going to lose our nut if we beat only Morgan State next year? Or go 2-10. The talent differential people harp on this year will only get worse next year.

I would say that this board is going to be pretty unbearable to read for the next couple of seasons. The people with little patience or vision will be very vocal about the losses and the others will most likely be "read only" or just stay away.

Honestly, I have no clue why people were so optimistic about the first game due to the quality of the opponent and our brand new system.

As an old timer I have been patient with many coaching hires and fires

I will be once again.... If we become an above .500 in conference type of team in three, four years, fine.

The funny thing is that the old timers should be the least patient, having been so patient for so long

Clearly some aren't prepared for it. They lose their shit after a bad loss to a great team, which is ironic because only a few years ago we were getting blown out by AAC teams that this year's ohio state would mop the floor with and I didn't see anywhere near the same histrionics.

Ash has to show that the team can compete somewhat by seasons end,and some improvement in spots on either side of ball..a repeat 50 pt ,shutout loss to Michigan will not go over well with recruits,or fan base.

If we can get two solid recruiting classes back to back, we can go bowling in 2018.

OOC games:
09/01 - Texas State
09/15 - at Kansas
09/22 - Buffalo

Cross Over (both at Home)
10/6 - Illinois
10/20 - Northwestern

That is 5 possible wins before playing anyone in our division. Maybe not with this year's team, but after two solid recruiting classes, we should be a lot better than this year.

Dont need bowl wins but would like to see real improvement, no silly penalties, sound use of best players on team (Martin and Hicks), efficient special teams, and at least coming close to the point spread.

First of all, you guys give up too easily. We have 11 games left to be played on the field.

Second, stop pointing finger at Flood and Pernetti. We have only had ONE top 25 recruiting classes in our history and they all said they would stick together if Flood replaced Schiano.

Third, our recruiting outside of the 2011 and 2012 classes was similar to what we have had t for a while. Schiano pulled in some studs but it took him a few years to get there. He also pulled in some under the radar kids and his class rankings from 2004-2010 averaged over 55. Flood averaged 52 from 2013 through 2015. It just so happens Schiano / Flood had a 33 in 2011 and a 25 in 2012 (credit to Schiano but that is why we kept Flood) which is where we need to be to succeed in the BIG. Probably lower but those were 2 great classes. My point is not to defend Flood, Pernetti or Schiano but to tell this board to stop whining about the past.

Fourth, by complaining about Flood's recuiting you are telling our players they are no good. Nice. Can we stop now please.

I like that Ash is locking in the solid 3 stars early which is a page out of D'Antonio's success at MSU. I really like everything about him so far. I won't complain when I don't like certain things but so far I like him. Getting to 6 wins now is not an easy job but not impossible. Don't give up just yet.
It is the recruiting, take out Schiano first couple years of recruiting and start from 2006, the recruiting is between 30-40 ranking not the 50's. Flood had 1 4 star recruit in 4 years while Schiano averaged 3 4 stars recruit every year.

Can we wait until we see how we fare against normal teams before dooming the next 3 seasons? So far this season we have beaten the two teams we were supposed. Got crushed by the two teams we were supposed to and played to the final minute with what appears to be an average B1G team. We have 5 average B1G teams coming up in the second half of the season. Let's see where we are then?

We will go bowling. I still say we go bowling this year.

100% disagree and the quarterback situation is the main reason. RU will win some games later in the season but good luck thinking they can take every single swing game, there isnt any evidence to suggest that there is any consistency on this team or ability to overacheive with the talent they have. It is what it is until Ash can improve the talent here

I think we should wait until Illinois to judge the QB position

After Michigan, every game left on the schedule is winnable THIS YEAR, that doesn't mean we will win out (extremely unlikely) but it sure as hell means we won't lose out either (also extremely unlikely).

No bowl this season or next.Year three better see a bowl or Ash will be on questionable ground IMHO.First step,we need to get to 500 maybe next season, then be able to comptee with half the other B10 schools in year three ,avoid blowouts then we can worry about bowls.

I agree. I think RU can go 4-2 over the back half of the schedule.

After Michigan drops RU to 2-4, the schedule lightens up.
  1. vs Illinois. 1-3 with a win over Murray State with a 24-point loss to Western Michigan.
  2. at Minnesota. Two 7-point wins at home against Oregon State (1-3) and Colorado State (2-3) and a 3-point loss to Penn State.vs
  3. vs Indiana. Before their big 3-point win over Michigan State, they beat Ball State by 10 and lost to Wake Forest by 5 at home after opening with a 21-point at FIU.
  4. at Michigan State. After beating Furman and Notre Dame (who was grossly overrated once again), they've been stomped by Wisconsin (24 points) and lost to Indiana.
  5. vs. Penn State. They suck and beat Minnesota by 3.
  6. at Maryland. 4-0 and have rolled everyone so far except a 6-point win at UCF.
The two toughest games on the schedule might be Indiana and Maryland. There was a huge amount of indignation on this board when several preseason magazines had the audacity to suggest RU was the cellar-dweller in the East. We all KNEW we'd go no worse than 1-1 against them and we'd probably sweep them... or has the Washington and Ohio State games made us question our preseason opinions?

Unfortunately this is the annual reality of rooting for an underdog program. Until the day everything clicks for RU, we're going to be underdogs or cellar dwellars. It can be draining though. We saw things rise briefly in 2006 that gave us hope that we wouldn't be the joke of college football. In a way we did move up, but only slightly. It was good to string a long several bowl trips but at some point it's reasonable to understand we want something better than a papa john's or beef o' brady's bowl. I want to be rooting for RU when they do what was once thought impossible for this program. I hope it happens someday, but when we see such a large recession and see a program like Houston explode into the spotlight you can't help but admire how they did it and wonder why we can't. It is what it is, but that's the life of rooting for an underdog.

That's being pretty overly optimistic. In year three, Ash's first class will be juniors, but it's about as small and weak a class as we've had in a while. Which means, you're leaning heavily on sophomores and redshirt freshmen. You can get to a bowl with that kind of personnel, but I wouldn't put Ash's job on the line if that didn't happen. I see this year as shaping up to be 3-9, 2017 as 2-10, 2018 as 5-7 or something like that. And we might be stuck at the 0.500 mark for a while unless B1G scheduling becomes kinder to us.

Michigan is not a better team than OSU but a bigger blowout would not surprise me because that's what their coach tries to do. I still remember the confrontation between he and Carroll during his days at Stanford.

I have been a fan growing up in Highland park, during and after my 4 years at the University of Florida, living everywhere from Massachusetts to San Diego and back. Do I have a freaking choice now?

Short answers:

Is the fan base ready? No.

Am I ready? Yes, since the end of last year when an astute observe could foresee this coming.

Is Ash ready? Yes. All answers regarding questions by media about competing the BIG have been answered truthfully. I'm sure that candidness is being conveyed in recruiting conversations as well.

Some of the brain dead responses on this thread makes me relieved that stupidity and ignorance is not contagious.

We are installing new schemes with new staff with players that aren't d1 caliber let alone big ten caliber. It's going to take a few solid recruiting classes to rectify this.

Throwing a temper tantrum that it isn't going as fast as you'd like isn't going to make it go any faster. Some of you are just whiny cry babies.

do you really think Oden is going to all of a sudden be a winner right out of the gate without a Grant on this team? First he will need to add about 25 lbs in the next two weeks. Look these games are winnable but our qb situation is going to be pretty murky all year

Don't expect the qb situation to improve much for this year. If it improves in any discernible way next year consider us lucky.

The optimism some people had going into the Washington game was stunning. I saw at least one fan on the Rutgers Football Facebook page actually post "Are we really an underdog?" the day before the game. Delusional. And people with artificially high hopes tend to be overly deflated when they are not met.

Chris Ash is a football coach, not a sorcerer. This year is nothing more than seeing what he's got, because a bowl is out of the question. It was a tiny little chance with Grant; without him, no shot. Just none. And that's OK, because we all knew how little Flood left behind.

That being said, I don't know what to expect in Year 2, but in Year 3, with that schedule? Yes, a bowl is a reasonable goal. Reasonable crossovers, reasonable nonconference slate, you have a chance to need only one win in the division. You can't assume all those wins, but it is reasonable to think we can win them. So I will not rule out a bowl in Year 3, which, including Flood's last year, would be three consecutive bowl-less seasons.

I can live with that. (Depending on some of the scores in the losses, of course)
