It’s gonna be another long season

I expected a 30 point blowout and it was well on its way down 17 early in the second half, and somehow it was a 3-point game with 2:30 mins to go. Geo decided to show up too late, and Myles Powell had 30 points of their 72. Someday we’ll have a player who can be that good and that clutch. But don’t count us out once big ten play starts. The freshmen did a lot of growing up today. Except Harper

This team is still growing. I know patience is an evil word to Rutgers fans, and I certainly understand why, but we need it with hoops. We’ll get there, but this year won’t be it.

Just do our best to not be last place. Improvement.
We all kind of thought this would be the case. We have a lot of young kids out there who are showing glimpses of quality play, but also really bad play. Hopefully they get their seasoning as the season moves on and we win some close games. I think we have a good nucleus. We just need them to gain experience and then relax out there.

Growing pain will lessen when we finally land a few seriously talented scorers. College hoops is largely a 3-point shooting game, and we have never mastered that part of it. Not even close. We don’t know what a good look is and, even if we do, we lack the shooting touch.

This was expected. Stop being so doom and gloom. Freshmen don’t show up and launch you to an NIT bid.
I wasn’t expecting NIT. I wasn’t even expecting a winning season. There was way too much over- valuing here of what we had. Doesn’t reject the fact that this is gonna be another long year. And having 3 straight last place finishes isn’t exactly good for a HCs resume. It’s why my goals have a low bar.

This was another winnable game which Rutgers loss because they can't get consistent scoring for two halves. Its hard to win when Rutgers shoots 10 for 40 in the first half and get only 3 points from Baker and Eugene. To their credit Baker,Kiss and Eugene came back and all scored in double digits but Powell is a difference maker with 28 points.Final score 72-66 Seton Hall and Rutgers had 79 shots which tells you offensive rebounding was outstanding but the shooting was abysmal at 31%.

It’s all about closing the gap. How can anyone not expect a long season ahead?

7-3/5-15...12-18...win one in the B10 tourney go 13-19 is a reasonable expection for this year, I realize its a step back from last year but its reality for a young team

The league has improved across the board which is fine. Today's effort was 100% fine to me as well.

The team used to struggle to defend and get decent shots. I can count on 1 hand the number of "eh" shots.

If you asked me would we defend enough, rebound and had numerous open looks from 3, i would've signed up for that all day. Resulting is defining progress because of a win or loss. SHU did enough today and made their FTs down the stretch.

Some transitions are being made during this process, some kids are playing through mistakes, some are learning on the fly and others that are stepping forward and taking shots without hesitation.

Harper Jr played a very aggressive and good game....not because he didn't make shots, it's taking the shots with confidence and not being passive or a non factor. I would take his game today and bottle it...that same effort and game where a couple of 3s go down and the look.and feel.of the roster changes a LOT.

Maybe a couple of shooters for RU would help in the future.

Other than QD we have not had shooters to match what SHU puts on the floor the past 25 years.

RU recruits the Slashers and defensive specialists while SHU recruits the shooters. Hoping this changes at some point in the future.

Myles Mack was pretty damn good at shooting.

I don’t know how can watch this program for the last number of years and not know you need to go out and find shooters. Real shooters. Lots of them.

Shooting is one aspect but Powell is more than a shooter, he's a scorer...he can move quickly to the basket and has the ability to create space with proper moves that have nothing to do with shooting.

Basketball or high level basketball is about being able to do more than one thing well. It sounds remedial but shoot, dribble, pass rebound and defend by moving your feet.

If you had to create a player, RU needs more multifaceted athletes and players that are similar to Baker, McConnell Harper Mathis, Kiss and next are Mulcahy and Young.

The players that aren't able to do multiple things, struggle most nights to have a consistent impact on the game. It's Eugene's junior season and he's grown into a complete player this year. He played to his strength of taking charges, rebounding and defending.

The last recruiting piece for 2019 is someone who has to be another plus athlete and complete basketball player....it doesn't matter if he's a small forward or Power Forward, but ideally it's a forward that can impact the game on both ends of the floor.

I just don't know how you look down the remainder of the calendar starting January 2019 and think we can come up with more than 10 wins for the year. If we get really, really lucky and the flu wipes out most of the league, we might get to 12 wins.

Not true. You can win with freshman as key contributors in college basketball.

You can....when you have even a couple of guys on the team who know how to win

When you have an entire group of players learning how to win for the first time...

The real problem is that this is not the game we expected to win. The Fordham game was one we should have shown up for! Instead of being 1-1 for the last two games we are 0-2.

95% of the fans predicted a loss of 6-8 points-- you watch and go to the games even if you expect a loss--and it was close --why the bitching?5

The Book here had it SH -6, Total 133. Game finished SH up 6 (a push if you bet the game) and 138 total.

This is also a 6-8 year rebuild. Next year it’s Mulcahy that will make us a tournament team guaranteed.

We just aren't going to win games when EO and Baker both don't do much all first half and we shoot 25%.

Team showed heart coming back. Mathis can get to the basket at will and is doing a better job of finishing and drawing fouls to go along with active D and rebounding. Harper's threes look like they are on the verge of starting to drop. Thiam has regressed back to his limited offensive ability besides a catch and shoot 3 and D guy. Surprised Carter didn't earn some more minutes after his last performance. McConnell with Geo for some minutes would be interesting

I'd also like to see the freshmen after another year in the weight room... especially Mathis. I think, as he gets stronger, he'll be a much better finisher around the rim.

Respectable loss?! SMH in year 3 we’re patting ourselves on the back because we sort of played a mediocre SHU close.

I am not patting myself on my back skippy. With a 6pt loss, the score was much closer than I predicted. Much more respectable than the 10+ loss I expected.

Yeah..we are in year 3 of a total rebuild of a program that has sucked for decades.

I agree about it’s only Year 3. But ... who signed Souf and who failed to have a true point available in Year 3. Okay, so clearly this was a throwaway year from the staff’s perspective because it used a scholarship for Young, a transfer sitting out, instead of someone who could play now.

Next year needs to be at least .500 to continue to have the faith. I just hope that Geo doesn’t lose his stroke in 19-20 because he was forced to play the 1 this year. No excuses about being “too young” next season. Hell, Young will be 22 when next season starts with 2 years to play. Let’s hope he’s worth the investment and Mulcahy stays healthy.

Rutgers has had shooters but usually no more than 2 on the court at the same time.Rosario,Mack and Carter are recent players .
