Jacob Young should not see the floor

I thought there were a few situations where our guys made up their minds to take it to the basket and wound up in obvious charging situations. They just need to watch the tape and learn.

Mixed feelings. Countless stupid attempts to score over Gill by multiple players with Geo being a repeat offender. Bad basketball, BUT showing swagger and confidence. Shut opponent to 48 on 70 possessions then do whatever you want on offense because it doesn’t matter

Yes Jacob had 5 turnovers but his defense was fantastic. The 2 charges are among his turnovers. Charges are counted as turnovers. Let's not make his performance look even worse. He is a player trying to make things happen. I happen to believe his 2 charges both should have been fouls on SHU as in both cases the defender was moving. He also should have had 2 points for himself when no goal tending was called. All 3 of these plays our crowd thought we got hosed. I think too many of our fans are criticizing Jacob rather than supporting him. we definitely need him and in the future he will be much improved I do believe.

Shocking to say his role model may be Mathis. Only 1/3 thru season and it looks like Mathis maturity has done a 180. He actually makes or tries to make the right decision in transition (loved the simple bounce pass to Caleb). It seems like he has accepted his role of 18-22 minutes and not be a focal part of the half court offense.
Glad you brought this up about Mathis. I thought the same thing. While he still gets ahead of his skis sometimes and commits a charge on fast breaks, for the most part I like his game this year, especially on D against better competition.

The line up of Mulcahy, Young, McConnell, Harper Jr, Carter is not a strong line up and doesn't allow players to play to their strengths. Just too much inexperience in that line up. Offense struggled both in Wisconsin and Seton Hall with this line up. I know others picked up on it.

Putting in a full 5 second line-up allows the team to play a pressure & frenetic D almost the entire game if needed. That being said, that 5 is generally co-mingled with starters as Geo and Yeb and Johnson are on the floor co mingled with them. People here seem to keep missing it, but Pike has built this team around a Defensive effort foundation and his rotation of 10-11 supports that.

That five was put in during Wisconsin and it almost allowed them back into the game.

If Myles stays out of foul trouble that rotation may be down to 9.

Thought one of his shots that was blocked was a flagrant goal tending. Plays great D. Adds much needed speed. Harper was 7 for 16. Gio was 3-10 but the unfair focus on Young is wacky.

Didn't realize that they were already counted as turnovers - will amend my prior post.

As for the SHU defender moving or not, they changed the rule on offensive fouls that you don't need to be firmly set and not moving - you just need to be in a legal guarding position. Makes it much more of a judgement call, imo - don't like that change.

I thought both calls were legit. I watched it again at 2am. And yeah a CLEAR goal tend even the announcers called out.

Yeah, I thought both calls were legit on the charges. Young was out of control and player had established position both times. The 1 on 4 was really a bad decision - need to have your head up enough to know you don't have the numbers, and can't account for all 4 defenders as you drive to the basket. As the announcer said, could see that charge coming a mile away (just like the Carter charge). Need to play more head up and know when to back it out and reset.

Also thought the goal tend was missed, but they miscalled a goal tend in our favor earlier, too.

Overall thought the officiating favored us with a "let them play" slant - lots of contact was let go, and overall it was a loose whistle that let our guys stay out of foul trouble. They occasionally blew a whistle on things they'd let go at other points in the game (which was headscratching for a moment), but end-to-end it felt to me that they let a ton go uncalled (which worked to our benefit more than theirs)

Its definitely a game best played heads up.

Yeah, I forgot about that reply of the other goaltend.

I loved the overall officiating. Let them play. Call the obvious.

Criticism of JY: strong but not over the top, imo. He is an incredibly frustrating player. He is an excellent on the ball defender (and plays defensive with an aggressive and dogged attitude), lightening quick and occasionally gets himself clean to the rid. Offensively, though, he is a major negative—too much dribbling, his drives into the paint too. Often end in blocks, turnovers, misses, and his outside shot has been very poor.

He plays with a lot of energy and swagger. Pike has to get him to dial both back and play more with Brian les with emotion.
