Jan. 10, 2004‬ l "They're going nuts at the RAC." Down 5 with 28 seconds left...

Herve. Damn he should have been SOOO much better. had potential to be the best player ever at RU IMHO with all that raw skill.

I hope we can keep our media people together for a little while longer before Madison Avenue starts to steal them away.

They keep getting better and better.

It's a shame that we have sunk so far that we look back on the Waters' years as glory days.
I will look at it with a glass half filled attitude with the hope they keep digging and find some other games from the past from as many eras as possible for things like this.

Was there too, but usually am. I had a great angle on Herve's shot from where we sit.

Baseball statistician Bill James is a Kansas grad and Jayhawks fan. His 2008 article "The Lead is Safe" provides a formula for determining when a game is over.

Maybe one the math savants on this board can determine the earliest point in the game when fans should have known this game was over.
From the article ...
  • Take the number of points one team is ahead.
  • Subtract three.
  • Add a half-point if the team that is ahead has the ball, and subtract a half-point if the other team has the ball. (Numbers less than zero become zero.)
  • Square that.
  • If the result is greater than the number of seconds left in the game, the lead is safe.

Of course, all this goes out the window if a melee breaks out and the losing team is awarded enough technical free throw attempts to win the game. I've listened to my brother yell, "Start a fight. It's your only chance to win!" at the TV screen for decades when a game only has seconds remaining and his team is trailing by a margin in which it's obvious his team can't win by conventional means.

One of the byproducts of that less-than-surefire strategy is that player and coach suspensions and possible injuries affect the outcome of subsequent games. Though I bet your brother has it covered with walk-ons and bench players as designated instigators and the stars as peacemakers.

Herve really needed that 5th year and I think he would have continued to elevate his game and been a first round NCAA pick ...but the circumstances of him needing to leave when he did were totally understandable ....

When I was an undergrad, he was our best player... He's the only player I can recall in recent history that could play four positions.... I actually have a "1" jersey because my friends and I loved his game so much.

I remember that well..... a long time fan was sitting in front of me
and he headed for the exit around the time we were 5 down...

he missed the end and I did not let him forget about it for a long time

If i Remember correctly, we needed Providence to miss a couple of free throws in the last 10 to 15 seconds, which they did.

the ending of the home Nova game with Rice as coach was even more amazing..... I had DVR'd and saved the last couple of minutes of that game when we were down about 9 with not much time...

Yup, Donnie McGrath blew some FT down the stretch opening the door. I was sitting near his family members. They were jerks during most of the game, but left quietly.
