JMike needs to be the odd man out of the rotation when Pike cuts it down. He played only 5 minutes, yet still managed to force up three shots. Acuff played 23 minutes and took the same number of shots that just came during the flow of the offense. JMike is a forced shot waiting to happen, he really should not step on the floor anymore. Give those minutes to Hayes or Martini and get them and their shooting going. It’s obvious we need more 3 Point shooting and Dylan and Ace need more help. JMike just doesn’t have anything to offer as far as positives on the floor.

Agree about JMike. Disagree about giving any minutes to Martini. He has bern invisible on offense and defense. And when he had the chance to contribute tonight missed both his free throws. Hayes has done nothing. All of their minutes should be allocated to the others..

We have to figure out how to get Martini and Hayes going. They will be a better team for it. Can’t bring in a guy like Hayes as a transfer with shooting ability and just have him rot down the end of the bench sitting next to Bryce Dortch. Pike, the staff, Hayes and Martini need to figure that out as we need more made threes to win some of these games. If we had 1 made three from Acuff, one from Derkack, one from Hayes, one from Martini tonight we win this game. Hell, if we just had 3 more made threes we win. They have to figure this out.

JMike has the ability to penetrate and if his drives collapse some of the defense, he must look for open shooters or getting ball movement on offense going. Too many of his drives get stuffed. His minutes will largely be determined on how much we need his defense or to rest JWill. Hope to see more assists and steals out of his limited minutes.

This sounds like you're writing about Montez Mathis. They're the same player.

Don't write jaMike off.

I said the same about Ogbole. I know only a few decent (or not awful) games from Ogbole.

The staff HAS HAS HAS to reprogram this guy on offense.

He will be needed to bottle smaller elite guards we face. He needs to be better on D too, but we know he can.

I agree with your points, but this season is a one year deal and we don’t have the time or patience to hope he completely changes his game. It’s like asking a tiger to change his stripes. He plays a million miles per hour at all times when on the floor, that is a big problem. He just flys to the basket constantly and does not have a good outside shot if the defense plays off of him. Can he learn to pick his spots and play with a little patience? He flies around the court like a lightning bug high on meth. Derkack has some of these qualities as well, can’t have those two on the floor at the same time. Derkack is at least capable of scoring or drawing fouls when he drives. Derkack did not have his best game yesterday, and his outside shot is obviously not great so dealing with Derkack’s drives is just going to be a thing this year as he does bring other positives. Wish he would pick his spots and also look to pass on some of his drives though as he just puts his head down and plows to the hoop.

JMike’s defense is not even effective, people speak of him like he is some sort of defensive stopper and it is just not the case. I don’t want to hate on him but he doesn’t bring positives when on the floor. Pike is playing a lot of guys in his rotation. It seems like he could cut it down and try and figure out how to incorporate Hayes more because if we brought him in here to sit on the bench and talk to Bryce Dortch for 2 hours then it was a waste of time bringing him in as a shooter for this team.

Rutgers offense isn't made for players like Hayes and Martini. Its made for players like Bailey, Harper and Williams that can create shots off the dribble.Alabama had so many open 3 point shots because of ball/player movement .Sears went wild in the second half with open 3 pointers from the corners.

Not sure why we can’t have Hayes in a corner and Dylan, Derkack or JWill or Ace kicks it out to the corner once in a while. We don’t really kick the ball out when guys penetrate, not sure why. Everyone looks to shoot, Dylan has more presence of mind with his game to look for others and knows when to score and when to dish but Derkack just puts his head down and plows in there. He is a good passer, not sure why he can’t look to kick out to Hayes or Martini in the corner. This needs to be stressed to find three point opportunities for these guys because we are going to be a bad 3 point shooting team if Hayes is chit chatting over on the bench with Grant and Dortch all game.

Because Dylan makes 85% of his layups

We had these exact same conversations last year about GG.
"He needs to move around more to get shots."

At what point is the offensive plays supposed to get people open?
Run off-ball screens to open up a shot?

Offensive plan shouldn't be "everyone just move around wherever you want".

Defenders aren't going to help off Hayes or Martini for an open 3pt attempt just to stop a reckless drive to the hoop for maybe 2 pts.

Dylan/Ace they are more likely to help because it's more likely they'll score.
Williams or Derkack or Davis?
You would take them driving for a mid ranger floater over an open 3pt every time.

The offense has to work to get them open for shots not just hope they miraculously get a lapse in defense.

Ogbole will definitely be needed at some points during the season but last night he played WAY better than all his previous games. We can’t expect this every night or even most nights. I’m sure there will be plenty of Badbole going forward but it was nice to see he can contribute vs. a top team.

As is Derkack is going to be given plenty of open looks and he will take them all seemingly. We can't have our low percentage shooters take as many 3s are we currently do.

Montez at least sparked our team multiple times on offense when we couldn’t score.

I don’t see that capability from J Mike and don’t think his defense is as good as Montez was. It does seem like J Mike is going to be an odd mad out.

The real issue is that at this point Lathan isn’t capable of playing defense at the level that Ogbole did in the Alabama game. He’s just not. That doesn’t mean Ogbole is great nor does it mean he always plays as well as he did in that game (and he wasn’t fantastic either, believe me - he was servicable).

The problem is - right now, Lathan will only not hurt us majorly on D against teams that don’t have a major conference level front court. When he’s out there - we take a major hit up front on D. That’s just a fact. And Martini isn’t big enough at the next level. So we have to hope Ogbole steps up or it’s going to be a long season despite having 2 stars.

I agree with others on Davis. In his case, I don’t care as much that he’s a good defender. We have other options on the perimeter which means if he’s going to drive into a defender and penetrate ever time he has the ball he should not play. He was a +/- disaster as far as I could see.

Right now our best and deepest lineup is a three guard lineup with Ace as a wing and either ogbole, Summerville or martini on the floor. We are deepest at the guard and have more situational depth there.

Disagree. JMike is the most maligned RU player on this site, and why? - because of his forcing shots. The same is true of Derkack. This is more a coaching problem and less of a player problem IMO, and it extends back nine years to Freeman, who Pike allowed to shoot threes (even though he couldn't throw the ball in the ocean) whenever he wanted to because he worked so hard on defense. Great coaches don't make deals with players. It's like the kids coming in next year. If you come here you can do whatever you want on offense. No, No, No.. It should be easy to get JMike to stop forcing shots, same with Derkack. Just coach them not too. We need their defense.

Derkack is bigger to try and help with rebounding, defends and at least draws fouls when he drives. Neither Derkack or Davis can shoot from outside. Derkack just offers more as far as what he can do when on the floor. We even saw good passing from him earlier this year, and it would be nice to see some of that passing return. Not hating on JMike but he doesn’t offer a lot in the area of positives. The only area I ever thought JMike was effective was when we press opponents, but I don’t see a great half court defender. I think he should be viewed and used similar to Jalen Miller, brought in during certain games and times as needed as opposed to regular rotation minutes.

Dercack and JaMike offer slightly different things on the defensive end. They aren't apples and oranges more like oranges and grapefruit.

Going to keep this thread saved and will bring it out and paste it in the JaMichael Davis Appreciation Thread someone will create in the near future.

Maybe - I’m not so sure about this though. Davis is a good on ball defender. I don’t see that as having been the big issue for us on D. We give up too many 3 pointers. Davis isn’t a stellar help defender where he alone resolves that. The bottom line is from what I can see, we don’t get materially better on D with him in there vs Jordan at any aspect of the defensive game. Jordan has played much better on the offensive end.

Derkack has forced shots but in general Derkack’s aggressive mistakes have had a lot more good than Davis’s imo. Derkack did a bunch of stuff that was just a *little bit* too ambitious and it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch to get him to rein it in slightly. A lot of that stuff might have worked in his previous spot.

A lot of Davis plays look like they have no hope and he’s been doing the same thing since he got here against the same competition.

This. He’s a mess on offense right now.

It’s like JMike forgets he’s only 6’1 when he takes off for the hoop.

Well, he can imitate Dylan - where he drives, collapses the D and then fires out to someone for an open look.

Problem is - will the defense collapse?
Why give up an open 3 when Davis can try to score over much bigger and stronger players at the hoop.

If I'm the defense, I'm giving Davis that chance all game long and staying with shooters.
Well, unless those are Derkack and Williams. Then it's a embarrament of riches: 3pt shot by 25% shooters or Davis wildly throwing it off the backboard.

This is what I think...will be honest not sure if I know for sure.

JaMike has a bit more lateral quickness and can better harass an opposing "1" and make it tougher to initiate offense and possibly extend an offense a few feet further back. If we get in a scenario where we want to try and deny a guard from getting the ball he can better face guard.

We know JaMike doesn't have the length AND JaMike hasn't been great so far, as a whole, on defense. We also all know JaMike is making terrible decisions offensively and quite honestly has been absoltely brutal.
