JQ to RU?

Looking forward to next year with Mulcahy and Young coming in and no one leaving the backcourt, Pike will have his work cut out for him keeping the guards happy from a PT perspective. Baker, Mathis, McConnell, Mulcahy and Young. We could play 3 guards at times and some might consider Mathis a 2-3 but if going that route, than Kiss and Harper are in the rotation as well. Given what we have, I think another 4-5 big is the priority with the last schollie.

So much of a program changer that he is not playing well, or not finding a fit with one of the most respectful coaches in college basketball. When he talks, all eyes are on him. There are not many players who give the attention Jay Wright gets. He should be an honor to play for. JQ goes and says Villanova was his second choice? You really want a kid on your team who takes that opportunity for granted?

Add that he had legal issues around his recruitment. We have to think big picture. Some recruits do your program well, others can be headaches. Oh yeah, go after him too, and what does that say to Mucahy, who happens to be a far better all around basketball player than JQ?

With a player like Mulcahy, you don't mess around. You see how critical he is to building a winning program. You prioritize because the future of the program sometimes depends on it. You don't send mixed signals.

I will back an NJ kid till the cows come home. As mentioned, I am sure he is a great kid. Just not someone you go after when you have committed pieces that are more important. I do hope JQ finds his place, and does well.

Let's temper expectation for Mulcahy

You will get stars for being able to dribble a basketball very well in HS. isiah Briscoe is an example. JQ is a very good dribbler. Dribbling that much is a waste, and doesn't contribute to winning at the next level. Also, he is not a great defender. Is he a knock down shooter? Is he an IQ player? Can he guard a pick and roll? A growing program needs program kids, and underrated players. 5 stars don't always scream all about team mentality. That is what is needed to get Rutgers forward.

Any more questions?

to the average fan, a five star high school senior would have all the abilities to play college bb

quickness, shooting, dribbling,defense.....

I don't challenge your statements, but wonder how JQ
got to the 5 star high school level, and then not
appear to have some of those qualities and is riding the bench

did the prognosticators miss badly?

You just sound clueless.

“You get stars for dribbling” if that were the case my buddy would of been a top 10 recruit on the country. And there’s no way you can judge what type of player he is off 9 games in his college career. He is better today than Caleb McConnell will ever be but you’d rather take McConnell. Come on now

I would imagine you creating a youtube about how goes of a dunker a certain player is. I could see the title being "5 STAR-BEST DUNKER IN THE COUNTRY. Just for hits. Over dribbling does not translate to wins.

Are you part of the population that think the star system gets you a great player all the time. That is not always true. You also dismiss other parts of a conversation so please feel free to not respond to this as you are not looking to have a discussion, just try to prove you have some great knowledge that no one else has.

If you want to recruit a player, you see what JQ said, and you are not pumped to bring him to your squad.

Some programs recruit players to get better over time. Just a thought. It sometimes works. Are you a Rutgers fan or just trying to promote your podcast?

This is some great info. Really appreciate the info. At first glance one would think “yes, let’s get this former McDonald’s All American.” But all things considered, it sends very mixed signals going after someone who made a post JQ did on Insta. I have no idea how good he is, but it doesn’t sound like he’s earning his minutes at Nova. I don’t think we’ll go after him if he transfers

Biazza, you make a great point about the assumption many people make about McDonalds, and that always translates. There are no guarantees that happens.

I would be highly surprised if the program goes after him.

But based on the original OP, this is gonna happen so some behind the scenes workings would have already Happened, no?

Quinerly apologized... Maybe he'll transfer after the year but if he truly has his mind made up he'd do it now so he could be eligible second semester next season, like the Kentucky guy. If not then smart money is on him staying at VU.

We will see. It is an anonymous message board posters site.

Anyone can write anything.

Ok. I get what you are saying, but I am saying we have no reason to not at least take a chance on the kid. It has been what 27 years since the last time we made the NCAA tournament, if a former top 30 recruit wants to come here and has 3 years of eligibility we are in no place to say "Nah you don't fit".

As for your last question. I am a Rutgers Fan! I was a season ticket holder from before birth until 2016 season when my Uncle passed away and we no longer had tickets. I have been watching Rutgers for over 20 years, from the Billets to Jeff Greer to Joe Salvi to Herve Lamizana to Quincy Douby to Marquise Webb to Jerome Coleman to JR Inman to Corey Chandler to Mike Rosario to Myles Mack to Corey Sanders to Geo Baker. So I hop that proves my Fandom to you. I could name more guys like Joel Wiggins, Sean Axani, Kareem Wright, if you don't believe me. I tag my podcast because I am trying to grow it and hope one person here clicks on it and likes it but I am Rutgers fan through and through.

5 stars don't always translate to NCAA D1 basketball. They also don't always translate to NBA. A lot less likely there. If they take the jump, they don't always stay in the NBA.

Let's discuss.

It is always easy to see what play will translate. Evaluating is not always easy. Misses happen all the time. There are people like Russ Wood that have a fine eye for the game. There are also some people that make mistakes. You hear Pikiell say all the time, " So and so can shoot, pass and dribble."

A coach of a building program wants fundamentals. They also want to see high IQ, a sold work ethic, and a love for the game. They have to exhibit game.

Baker is a good example of that.

Absolutely coaches can say no you don't fit. A job recruiter looks for fit as much as anything. Coaches don't take risk. JQ has been a prime ball handler and is not tall enough to be off the ball. You don't recruit both him and Mulcahy and mess up what you already worked so hard for.

Good to hear. Your post were all sarcastic, so I wanted to see how you would respond to your own style. We can have different opinions without the need for that.

Fair, I disagree with your take. But thats what message boards are for... discussion

I find that McD AA's that don't do well in college, have more success in the pro's. Not all but usually you would assume that if a player plays poorly in college they don't do well in the NBA. So I do think there are some skills that translate better to pro than college from these types of players. Also goes to the theory of fit and how structured college systems can be under some elite NCAA coaches.

The fact there is a consensus that we should pass on a player of JQs caliber is mind blowing.

Have you ever seen this kid play?!?! He’s a program changer! Im drooling at the idea of him coming here.
He’s also a program killer… High risk, high reward.

JQ is not a fit for every program...that means RU and probably Villanova as well. Some programs that are building a culture that is team-centric doesn't mean every player fits in.

Fans believe talent means your team is better.....not always the case. Is Quinerly better than McConnell is not debatable....the question is if Quinerly is buying in, wouldn't he be better than the guards Villanova has playing ahead of him?
That's for Pike to find out. To outright dismiss transfers of his talent level is idiotic.

This whole selfish player vs. team-centric player argument...didn’t we have this viewpoint with Young? And I don’t know about you, but I think we all love the idea of Young now or at least are a lot more positive on him since his move from Texas. As someone mentioned, let’s defer to the coaches. They’ve created a culture where everyone enjoys being around each other. I’m sure they can continue that trend and have a better pulse on the locker room than us.

And this criticism for sitting on the bench on Villanova. This is a freshman sitting on the bench for the national champs here. (2 out of the last 3 years for that matter) I think their leftovers would be gold for a lot of teams out there (including us).

To know the player would mean you would see the talent is wildly overrated....not a shooter, not a worker as of now and an unwilling defender. He has OK guards burying him on the bench, but he's going to make his next stop where he decides to put it altogether??

This kid isn't about the work, he's about Social Media and follows.....there's a reason he's not playing....he's not working...but he's going to sit a year and work, vs not??

There are 5 star kids that are closer to typical 4 star players. JQ is one of them, with a large ego behind him. Let him work it out at Nova.

So what if he's closer to a 4 star? He's a freshman, who has plenty of room to grow. You'd be a real idiot to count him out so early. This program just lost to Fordham and is in no position to get picky like this. To not even give him a shot?? Really?

Something tells me he will wind up at SHU. No concrete basis; just a premonition.
I believe the BE has a two year sit out policy for anyone transferring within conference, so that would prohibit

I have been to 8 RU practices. Jacob Young is very down to earth. He communicates well with every guy on the team all of the coaches and all of the managers. He works every day with the scout team but his time to shine will be next year. He can shoot and play defense and is the fastest guy on the team. His hands are excellent on defense. I look forward to next year when he joins our other guards along with Paul Mulcahy. I have seen Paul play 7 or 8 times and I hope to see him play his opener Saturday at Elizabeth after our against St. Joseph's of Montvale at 6:45 PM.

Are sure Paul plays tomorrow at Elizabeth?

His barely playing on a so-so Villanova team for a national championship coach says more about how good he is than his 5* rating. Watched him on the court the other night and he was not very good, did not appear very athletic and even looked kind of small. Add in what might be a questionable attitude and the fact that we have three point guards next year and we probably have more important needs at this point.
