He is not a Division 1 player. Rarely do you see a scholarship player who is so over-matched physically as Goode. He hardly ever shoots and looks like he belongs on a high school JV team. He plays so passively that its hard to watch.

You think that redshirting last year would have opened his eyes as to how physical play is at the Division 1 level. He should have checked into the weight room and re-emerged 1 year later.

I would love to know his +/- when he's in the game. It has to be the worst on the team.

If he wants to play next year, he has to put some effort into his play. Outside of a few nice passes that he's made here and there, he is a complete zero.

The scary part is that positive comments were being said regarding Goode during preseason practices regarding his outside shooting.

Dr -- although your comments are accurate, your target is wrong. Don't criticize a kid who got the thrill of being offered a P5 scholarship. Blame the pathetic excuse of a staff that Rutgers pays for either completely failing to understand the kid's limits ... or being unable to find anyone better to accept a scholarship.

At best, he was a package deal with Kejuan Johnson ... whoe ended up walking away from RU for another year of prep school in New England. So, another swing and a miss from EJ and crew.

In another thread I mention that Justin just doesn't move enough to get open, suggesting he should watch video of Steve Alford. But of course people were telling me I was wrong.

I watched him all game, he pretty much stays in one area, no hard cuts, no running off screens etc. therefore no shots.

If he is going to be used, you have to try to get something out of him.

Just a correction...Kejuan Johnson did not end up meeting RU's academic standard for admission and athletic competition.

Thanks BK. I was hoping Kejuan would have been a Joel Salvie type for us, kid that did the dirty work.

If we are giving players like Goode a scholarship, we might as well jump on a few of the currently lowly recruited Shore Conference players that can shoot and score, such as Brendan Barry of Rumson and Peyton Wejnert of Southern

Or any under recruited NJ player but at this point Ivy/Patriot looks like a better option. Justin Silpe, Karl Charles, Amir Bell, Justin Sears, Pat Andree.

Maybe it's on our staff? Do we develop or is that not part of the package?

The disheartening reality is that we would be even worse if we didn't have him.

Sigh

I was optimistic about Goode coming into this season but I saw him more as a point guard than an off guard. Either way I was wrong about him..definitely not a Division 1 player as of right now. But since he's here I'd like to at least see him take some shots since that's what he's supposed to be really good at. Run some plays for him..get him open. Otherwise, he's just a body out there

If you watch his high school highlights he always had the ball in his hands making plays and shots, yes it is a different level of competition, but he just plays too passive, not the same player That you see on the video. If anything, now is the time he should play aggressive and take 8 shots a game, dribble drive or shots from deep...someone has to score...he can't be discouraged by a few misses like in the Maryland game

I wish our fans would stop bashing our players.
sO DO i.
Justin has a pretty good HS resume ( from Goode's bio on ScarletKnights.com):
>Scholastic: Competed at Hargrave Military Academy for half a season before enrolling at Rutgers…Averaged 19.9 point-per-game during senior season at Lord Betetourt High School in Virginia…Also shot 91.6 percent from the free throw line and dished out 4.2 assists-per-contest …Named VHSCA Group 3A Player of the Year…Helped Lord Botetourt to a semifinal appearance in the 3A Virginia playoffs…Named First Team All-Conference and All-Blue Ridge District by the Roanoke Times…Rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com.<

The coaching staff is the ones to be given the abuse if any member of the team isn't playing like a pro.
Getting the most out of a player is the coaching staffs job and coaches helping every member of the team utilize their talent is what makes a winning team.

Thanks for the details. My point is thst if the staff offered Goode to help with Kejuan, the staff screwed up. Hard to believe that after being burned on Diallo and Ryan Johnson, that the staff was offering kids with shaky grades. One backwards step after another.

What choice do they have? No one with any options is commiting to play here. This is like blaming flood for keeping Barnwell on the team.

At some point, the rubber meets the road, and the coaches are going to have to get whatever talent they can.

Cabbage -- maybe if Eddie had hired better assistants he wouldn't have offered a kid that wasn't starting on his prep school team. Or offer scholarships to multiple kids who either couldn't get in or got in but couldn't play as frosh. Or give a scholarship to a KSU back-up guard who needs to sit out a year. Or sit on a scholarship for a year and then not sign anyone. Look, if you're going to take a chance on a big like Doorson or Diallo, I get it. But sorry, I don't buy that there weren't better, more athletic kids available. Hey, I don't blame Goode or anyone else for accepting a full ride for a chance to be on a B1G roster.

listen this is the best post in the thread to sum up our issues with lack of talent and roster numbers here. Im not going to bash players other than to say some do not belong at this level..we have more than one here..several. Overall the management of recruiting and the roster has been poor. So its maginifying the injury problem. I am not going to fall back on the injury excuse when evaluating Eddie, I am going to look at these recruiting misses and issues and lack of recruiting for next year.

Goode just plays too passive and needs to take shots. He has turned down a lot of open looks. He is obviously suffering from a lack of confidence. He needs to let it fly. I have not seen anything to suggest that he cannot be a shooter at this level in a limited role. No one knows because he does take the shots he gets. He has only taken 36 shots all year.

Defensively, he would need to be on the floor when zone is played.

The problem isn't Goode himself, the problem is having a player like Goode logging major minutes. This is more an indictment on the lack of depth and poor recruiting that has been going on for years. I believe the most a player like Goode should be relied upon is to give 4-8 min per game to give the main players a breather, and hope that he might be able to knock down a 3 and spread the floor. This is the type of player you want on your team, to not even see the court for his first couple of years. Have him work on S&C and develop his game. Then by the time he is a Junior and Senior he can come off the bench to give some valuable minutes and knock down some shots. Unfortunately at Rutgers we routinely count on average to below average players to come in and contribute right away. Other programs have the luxury of developing the players and gradually give them playing time when they're ready to contribute to the program.

Some of you guys expect every player that is brought in to have an immediate impact . Not every player is like that. Goode was probably expected to take time to develop and maybe play 5 - 10 minutes per game. Unfortunately, with all the injuries he's been forced to play way too many minutes.

I forbid to give exscues for anyone when your number is called upon to produce , your suppose to step up

When sitting at the scorer's table just before entering a game, Goode needs to be thinking "I'm about to enter this game now and I am going to make a positive impact. I'm going to hustle, dive on the floor for loose balls, move without the ball, create good shot opportunities for myself and make smart decisions." Right now, he seems to be thinking "I'm entering the game now. I don't want to draw any attention to myself. I hope I don't do anything that makes coach mad."

Scholarships are supposed to be offered to recruits fully capable of competing in the B1G.Immediate impact at Rutgers rarely gets past two players and in far to many instances they transfer. The bottom line is that Rutgers has failed in the past because the squads were full of complementary players and not enough go to scorers.Decades of futility has shown recruiting has been a utter failure and many head coaches are too blame.

The dude needs a serious kick in the a$$. I don't think he stinks. I just agree what a saw was a sleep walker the last game. Gosh darn it. Get into already. Suck it up. Grow a pair. Get some fire in your belly!

If the kid could play with the passion I thought I saw early on I think he would be fine. Somebody telling him he is not allowed to participate?

In the 1st game he was the 1st off the bench (I believe). This tells me over the 6 weeks + of preseason he did enough to impress.

The team needs to get him the ball when he is open and Jordan can't play him 29 minutes if he isn't going to produce offensively. Eddie is perpetuating Goode's lack of pulling the trigger by giving him 29 minutes. It needs to be told he is hurting the team by not shooting.

Can someone keep Mr. Jordan and Mr. Vetrone after school and ask each of them to write that on the blackboard a couple hundred times?

What if no one capable of competing in the Big Ten wants to play for us? We have to give these schollies to SOMEONE.

Didn't some of the Shoe detractors praise him last year?
Not saying he's top of the line or below it, just that this board praises one minute than
does a 360 and claims he/she's not good enough.:chairshot:[laughing]

Everybody complains about the quality of our recruiting, offering marginal students who don't get in, offering non D1 players, etc.
Ya ever think who else would want to be here but the desperate, kids like to have fun which includes winning an occasional game. We are well on our way to winning 1 BIG game in two years, perhaps this is the impediment to decent recruiting. There are a bunch of examples out there of people building D1 programs with kids who have some talent and are willing to play defense and team basketball. while Corey and Jonathan are nice players how long will they put up with the train wreck that is RU basketball.

Sadly, this has been the story going back to the Big East and now the Big Ten.Playing competition above your talent level for decades will result in predictable results.Compound that fact with the lack of caring by the athletic department in regard to facilities has caused this nightmare to go unabated.Nobody has cared because the mens basketball program was still making money while losing.
