Karl Hobbs to RU

Certain posters on this board find a reason to complain about everything. If we won the national title, there would be posters complaining on this board, guaranteed

They would be saying that it was really not that hard to achieve and that any coach could have done it. Anything less than a run like UCLA is unacceptable given the coach's salary...their ticket prices went up and they were moved away from the court...had to take shuttle over due to sellout crowds...

The buns on dollar hot dog night were stale.

Thought this was interesting as well since Ash wants younger types so he doesn't have to battle the established coach's "when I was a head coach we used to..."

Yeah, but doesn't the fact that Hobbs and Pikiell have worked together closely on a couple staffs over the past 25 years mitigate this a lot. These guys know each other and their styles extremely well. All Pikiell's hires have been guys from his coaching tree.

There is maybe a bit of a similarity to Ash's selection of defensive coordinator Jay Niemann - a guy who has definitely been around - a guy who the HC has known for 20+ years - a guy who the HC can say 3 words to - and convey 3 paragraphs worth of thought. ... and similarly get 3 three words back doing the same thing.

Why did it take Jordan so long to assemble a staff? Was it just $?

As every day passes I am feeling better and better about this hire. Is it too early to say he is Schianolike?

Why did it take Jordan so long to assemble a staff?

- $$$

- the fecal-matter storm that parked over the program - who wants to be on the staff of this mess?

- the whole "what? ... Eddie does not have a diploma?" thing - & "will they yank the offer & go to another guy?"

I think it's a good hire-----Coach P and Hobbs obviously know one another being from UConn so there's a relationship there and he's an experienced HC who's worked most recently in a winning program.

I would rather have had Brandon Knight personally but it wasn't meant to be so you move on.

RU gets an experienced Assistant and Hobbs likely doubled his salary----win win for both IMO.

Mulcahy to me did not care about bb and we finally have a guy that won't take us being 12-19 and be happy about it.

Mulcahy's priority was football because at the end of the day that is the sport that drives the bus. We would not be in the B1G if the football program did not get priority.

Now we have a stable home and future revenue so we can upgrade the other programs. I am very happy to see the success of the wrestling program and look forward to a competitive future in MBB.

well maybe we will get to keep shoes now that we will probably be paying Hobbs some decent cash.

What a great hire. Coach and coach 1a. And we stole him from a basketball powerhouse and his alma mater. First time I think being in the B1G has really helped us and hurt a local competitor.

RU hoops and football finally acting like the big boys we are.

These next few years of ascension into greatness are going to be legend!!!

Better hire than any of Ash's hires. Loved that he hired a prior HEAD coach with Division One experience and not a yes man. Love the fact that he hired an experienced Northeast coach with Northeast connections. The letter was great! Our basketball coach gets it!!

This is a significant upgrade.....Carino's comments are not surprising, he has been accused by some fans of being pro SHU, while the SHU fan base feels like RU gets more press coverage and he may not want to appear to be touting a grand slam hire for RU....in any event, this is a grand slam hire, regardless of his comments about what happened many moons ago at GW, not to be confused with a hoops destination in a great conference.

Ironically, as soon as RU starts getting things organized with contacts and coaches that will get things done just like every other major program has done, will you start to see negative comments. I feel pretty confident that some pipelines of recruiting will be pretty much opened up now and if there are departures, we will quickly revamp and retool the roster to quickly enhance the talent/coaching and performance of the team.

Gone are the days of lack of communication on the sidelines during games, during timeouts. Time to start to get amped up folks....

Anyone who does not think Hobbs is not a home run hire as Associate Head Coach is completely nuts and can never be satisfied.

I mean here is a guy who may actually is MORE qualified to be a head coach than even the head coach hire RU just made, and RU and Pikell were able to persuade him to join the staff as an assistant. Here is a guy who IS a shark recruiting - but with a LOT more experience and major basketball coaching experience than Ventrone (who has done a nice job for RU, do not get me wrong). Here is a guy who arguably is better and more qualified to be a head coach at RU than so many people's favorite, Danny Hurley(who I did not want - and said so often before Jordan was even fired).

With all due respect to some others, who may have wanted Knight or Marshall ... really? Karl Hobbs is potentially WAY more impactful, way more experienced, and shows a MAJOR commitment to basketball by the entire RU administration than any of the other rumored assistant coach candidates.

You can even argue that Karl Hobbs did a better job at GW than Lonergan did. He is most certainly a home run hire.

Great info Hawk. Thanks for the "nuggets".

Yes

Just seeing this all now, but Hobbs is a terrific steal from UConn. I'm not in love with his work as a HC, but as a recruiting assistant, he's gold. Well done.

What a B.s. post. It's too early to judge and ash has 50 times the chance at success because his program is not a dumpster fire like our basketball program is.

Karl Hobbs was the point guard on Patrick Ewing's high school team.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Betcha goes down with Van Gundy, Vitale and The Fridge as best assistant coaches in RU history. Hiring coaches with Head coaching experience is a good thing.

Not just directed at you, AshCatchEm, but please, everyone, let's not continue to push any basketball vs football split or rivalry.

Hobbs sounds like a great hire. Things are looking up for Rutgers athletics!

The difference is that Hobbs was the head coach and now Piikiell is the boss.Chemistry is what matters during practice and at team meetings.Coaches have big egos and that will be the challenge for the Rutgers coaching staff knowing their roles.

Wrong. I have been advocating to keep Shoes and still do.

Thanks for proving my point Nuts

Hiring Karl Hobbs may increase the likelihood that Shoes remains. You now have two high level coaches in HC Pikiell , former HC Hobbs and another guy that worked for Pikiell for the last 7 years as an assistant coach. You can now hire a coach to recruit and .maybe that guy is Shoes, the recruiting shark.

Hobbs is supposed to be a recruiting shark and his coming to RU might mean he'll be the main recruiter along with being the top assistant.
Shoes might stay, but I think with 2 spots open Pikiell might go for teachers more than keeping Vetrone because of his recruiting skills.
I hope Shoes stays, but won't be surprised if he goes

On Ash's staff there is much youth but also there are some experienced guys that held big positions:

Jay Niemann - 25 years experience and was a HC for 6 seasons.

Vince Okruch - 35 years experience. Was a HC at a small college as well as DC at B1G schools Northwestern and Illinois. Worked with Lou Holtz and Urban Meyer

Bill Busch was a DC at Utah State.

These are not "yes men".

None as impressive as a former Head Coach from a Northeast Division One School with multiple trips to the Big Dance. Just not.

This is like hiring the Fridge. Best assistant coach hires in recent RU memory.

I love hiring assistant coaches with Head Coaching experience like Urban did with Coach Schiano.
