Kyk,
I have been to Virginia Tech. I would take that area over the area around Seton Hall in a second. The campus is much is better imo. Parts of it reminded me a bit of West Point. Can't say Blacksburg is the best college town I have been to (was there in 1999),but it is OK and the southwest part of Virginia/Tennessee region is beautiful. Heck of a lot nicer than the northeast Virginia/Washington,DC mess.--Just my opinions, others may disagree.
Canpus and facilities def better, but surrounding area and having to raise a family there? Nahhhh

The campus itself for shu isn't that bad..right outside of the gates it's awful though

I agree. I dont know a soul who would wanna live in blacksberg. Ive heard its awful outside of being a drunk college kid.

Willard also recently overpaid for a decent at best house in westfield too

Ah a Real Estate expert too------guess he should have looked in Dunellen.

My experience in this area is limited as I've only lived here for 43 years but the next guy I hear about who loses money buying in Westfield is the first.

I mean he's a real estate agent so he probably knows what he's talking about

I mean he bought it for $2mm, he'll be very lucky to get $1.6 when he sells if he jumps ship. Luckily for him, he'll be jumping somewhere that'll pay him at least $1mm more per year

Westfield is an upscale community with a lush residential areas and and a trendy downtown area. Excellent school system to boot.

Want to guess whether it was his listing ? :):):)
nope, i don't go into that area, too rough for me on those streets. I don't really sell that many homes anymore I've made the transition over the past couple years to syndicating apartment communities out of state

South Orange was voted Top Ten up and coming towns in NJ. Train line to NYC making town very desirable.

South Orange is a great town - it's just that Seton Hall University sits right on the edge of town abutting Upper Vailsburg and Orange. A half a mile west of SHU's campus is a different world than a half a mile east of it.

How much different is it if you compare New Brusnwick in the same fashion?

Comparing NB with Newark and Orange? Really?

Add up the amount of violent crime in a 3 mile radius from SHU's campus vs. RU's campus, and there's really no comparison.

I will say that the area around SHU has definitely improved in the last decade or so, though, as has Newark in general - it's not what it was years ago.

South Orange is a really nice town and that part of Essex County is great. Yes there are bad neighborhoods nearby but that is hardly unique to that area.

I grew up in West Orange, so I know the area well, and have friends and family who grew up in South Orange and live there now. My father grew up in South Orange and was an Essex County cop for 25 years. SHU is at the very edge of the "nice" parts of Essex County, and turning right out of campus onto South Orange Avenue has always been an entirely different experience from turning left.

Ha I have just about the same story.
Grew up in SO/Maplewood until 8th grade then moved to WO. My parents still live there.

Spent many a summer day at SHU fieldhouse/Walsh Gym playing basketball and screwing around (George Blaney basketball camp alumnus).
My dad grew up across the street from Columbia HS.

Everything you said about the area is absolutley correct.

How about the property taxes in South Orange? Similar to the sky high rates in West Orange?

Wojo of Marquette and Willard are the immediate top choices for Va Tech. I would imagine one of these choices has until tomorrow to decide.

Would be interesting if VA Tech took 2 Marquette HC's in a row?......I'm sure Wojo would jump to get back to his beloved ACC and rub shoulders again with Coach K (can't spell hypocrite without K - oh I guess you can...lol)...

I guess we'll find out tomorrow if Mr. Willard leaves for Blacksburg. My hunch - the answer is no as he'll get an extension and a raise to the 2.3 - 2.5 M range and stay put.

Not true. Va tech isnt exactly a sexy job. Its a very OK job in a crappy area. Personally i wouldnt leave SHU for Va Tech. Id stay one more year, let powell carry me to the tourney again and then bounce next off-season to a better job

Unless he has reason to believe Powell will leave early, or that VTech will be a considerable step up in salary. Also tough stepping into a situation where the school just had a Top 20 program that went to the Sweet 16 - expectations will be high.

If SHU makes the Sweet 16 next year, some more prestigious program than VT may make him an offer he can't refuse.

Agreed, i dont see a sweet 16 out of a willard coached team though. He regularly gets outcoached in the tourney

I'd take Willard over Wojo, but I would have thought they'd make a play for Cincy's Cronin. I'd take Cronin over them both.

But, V-tech will likely double his salary in an area with lower cost of living. So, there's the bird in hand.
is there really much of a difference between making $2 mill and $3 mill a year (don't say, yes, a $1,000,000 difference). Your quality of life doesn't change if you make 2 or 3 mill a year. Your qualify life does though get substantially worse when you leave North Jersey for the sticks of virginia where there is absolutely NOTHING to do. You couldn't pay me enough money to go to blacksburg. If I'm willard all I do is parlay this into a long-term extension and stay put at SHU. It's a program where expectations arent exceedingly high by any means, you're in a relatively easy conference where if you finish in the top half they gift wrap you into the tourney to get shelled and no one cares if you get obliterated because people are just happy to have their names called on selection sunday. Oh yeah, and north jersey isn't the worst place to live either.
