is there really much of a difference between making $2 mill and $3 mill a year (don't say, yes, a $1,000,000 difference). Your quality of life doesn't change if you make 2 or 3 mill a year. Your qualify life does though get substantially worse when you leave North Jersey for the sticks of virginia where there is absolutely NOTHING to do. You couldn't pay me enough money to go to blacksburg. If I'm willard all I do is parlay this into a long-term extension and stay put at SHU. It's a program where expectations arent exceedingly high by any means, you're in a relatively easy conference where if you finish in the top half they gift wrap you into the tourney to get shelled and no one cares if you get obliterated because people are just happy to have their names called on selection sunday. Oh yeah, and north jersey isn't the worst place to live either.

If Willard cannot negotiate SHU into paying closer than the one million dollar difference, I would jump now....respectfully disagree that
it won't make enough of a difference.....

Carino and others that are Pro SHU have decided that leveraging VTECH and their interest is the best way to push SHU as a school into a commitment for facilities being upgraded and a healthy raise and extension.

These are things that should have been already completed milestones ago, but like anything else, if you aren't pressed into doing something, does it actually get done.

Willard was not VTECHs 1st choice. There are concerns (whether valid or not) regarding how much he did or was involved with the Whitehead saga etc. So there are skeptics out in the VT fanbase who are wondering if they are better off bypassing Wojo & Willard and overpaying.

Going to Blacksburg is really a tough sell for coaches outside of the region. It's not a tough sell to those in the Carolinas or Tennessee Kentucky region.

This will be spun into a win for SHU, when I don't think VT was truly sold on landing him. If they really wanted Willard, they'd up their offer and close the deal. Willard will get a few more years, a bump in pay and promise for other items.

If Turgeon walked out the door at Maryland to take another job and they called Willard for less money than what VT offered, he'd be halfway to the Delaware border already.

Duh on multiple levels in these couple sentences. From other posts you sound like a high achiever perhaps in late 20s. Obviously for you it's no question. However, for many others, the thought of living in along/near the parkway/turnpike area in North Jersey is a nightmare scenario. I spent 25 years about 15-20 minutes south of general location and you'd have to pay me twice my salary to go that general area. My quality of life would go down and even in Blacksburg/Roanoke, there's plenty of things to do, lol. Just about everything you can do in Joisey just with less variety of those options.
And making 2 million in this North Jersey area we're taking about or 3 in Blacksburg, we're talking basically double the salary when factoring in cost of living and home prices, etc. Huge difference!

There's also very little job security as a major conference head coach. Willard could have a long, successful career ahead of him.... or he could find himself as an assistant or at a Div-II school in 10 years. Putting a few extra million in the bank account isn't just about day to day quality of life, but insurance against future instability.

Making the extra $1M for the next 5 years means you can retire before 50 among other things . . . . .

Is there a parallel between Powell saying he'll test NBA scouts/waters, and potentially Willard leaving?

Before Willard was mentioned, Powell seemed highly committed to coming back.

It is likely that someone that likes living in North Jersey would not like living in Blacksburg VA. That being said, how much free time does a successful D1 basketball coach really have?

It's not the coaches free time, it's your family's lifestyle and what they get to do and how they spend those paychecks rolling in. SHU has to know he doesn't want to go to Blacksburg and thus Willard just wants to know things will get better. It's the HC that has a family in tow to consider and why I don't see this happening.

Not related. Powell is not getting drafted. He's testing the waters for feedback to improve his stock for next year's draft. He will be back regardless of Willard's decision.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of BE coaching changes, but not SHU. Wojo to VTech and rumors about Mullin negotiating an exit at SJU and entertaining Bobby Hurley. Not sold on Hurley as a great coach, but he's affordable and high profile name.

I hope he does what is best for himself. None of us know for sure what he will do.

Turgeon will be the next HC at Kansas so let's see what happens with Bill Self's situation.

SI Writer claimed that Willard was Babcock's first choice. Who knows ? I know I would take him over Wojo in a heartbeat. Wojo wants out and they won't shed tears in Milwaukee if it happens.

As to facility upgrades that isn't happening----at least anything major.

They lack the room and the money.

I hope he stays. But how good is the VT job when their #1 prospect is a coach 1-4 in the tourney? To those who think $3m in Blacksburg trumps all, I respectfully disagree. Willard can stay at The Hall for a very long time making what is very good $$$. Don’t see him going.

Lol. You can't be serious.
So I’m not saying this to toot my own horn but as an example I cleared about $640,000 last year after just getting my taxes done. The prior year I cleared about $410,000. My life did not change one bit despite the fact that I made Roughly 50% more money.

I want someone to explain to me what you can do differently with your life making $3 mill/yr vs making $2 mill a year. Can you fly private more? Sure, but why? Can you stay in a hotel room in europe with an extra room or bigger bathroom? Sure, but why?

With all due respect the answer is obvious to many of us.

You can INVEST the difference between 3M and 2M, especially when your housing costs and property taxes are much less the next 3-5 years in Blacksburg VA than they are in Westfield NJ. I wouldn’t be surprised if VT offers Willard an almost free home controlled by VT. In that case he has no living costs at VT.

I may be wrong ( .5 prob) but I still see Willard as a successful HC at Iona and SHU under the same AD in both places. Not sure if he can swim in the deep end of HC’s in the MBB world today. If I’m Willard I squeeze SHU for the next Extension.

But this is a good time for Willard to jump from SHU in the short term. If he is successful at SHU he will have better options.

Agree to disagree. He has more than enough $ to invest to set his kids kids up for life. Keep in mind he can probably get a 6-7 year extension out of SHU for like $2.3/yr right now. He can be the hall coach for 20-25 years. Safe job, good income, good area to live and raise a family. If im him im staying put and just getting an extension out of this even if its less money than VT. Give me SHU for 6 years $2.3 per over VT for 6 years $3.2 per. Youre a real asshole if you cant set yourself and your family up after making $2.3 mill a year for 15+ years

What’s taking so long for a decision? If I’m va tech, and Willard is stringing them along, move on to option 2 whoever that may be. Cronin? Wojo?

Best for RU for Willard to stay at shoe, though maybe a close 2nd is hiring Holloway from St Peters.

To be fair if Pike takes u to 4 tourneys and has a 1-4 record you will all likely at least drop Louis Brown’s name.

How do you know....you know there is a world outside the nyc bubble
I see your reading comprehension skills lack on this board too.

North Jersey is completely different than Blacksburg VA. I’ve been to both places. If someone likes living in North Jersey I would find it surprising that they would like living in Blacksburg and vice versa.

That’s a bit of a broad statement. People want different things at different times of their lives. Didn’t ever think I would leave NJ, but I have.

Still waiting on a response

Take the extra million and endow a scholarship at Rutgers if you can't find a better use for it.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but it only speaks to consumption. Yes, at some point more money may not really improve your life if (big if) you don't take pleasure in luxury goods. But more money also lets you build wealth, which can assist your family for generations. It also helps you achieve charitable objectives. At higher levels it will help you buy influence. Most non-materialistic people still see the value in having more money.

All in all though, topping out your spending goals at $2mm would put you in a very unusual class of people. Most people making $2mm a year still have their spending keeping up with their earnings, and would be significantly better off with 50% more money. People's tastes have a nasty habit of keeping pace with their earnings. As you make more money, your goals tend to change. At $3 million a year, you are still aren't really even into a "high luxury" life style. You could very easily spend that extra mill per year just on the boat.

Smart move by Willard to stay at SHU.

When was the last time another school wanted a current RU MBB HC?

Was it Bill Foster to Utah in 1971?

Tom Young? He did not get fired here, so we should assume he was approached.

He wasn't a top candidate and secured an extension and more money from SHU....Wojo of Marquette was the 1st choice and had the same bluff of asking for an extension and raise and Marquette hasn't blinked....no raise, no extension for Wojo.....

Not true - if Wojo was offered he would accept immediately.

Well certainly Wojo has really had great success at Marquette. And his team finished the season with such strength. He had to be the first choice.

He has been offered and his numbers at Marquette aren't far from what VT wants to pay for him to leave. VT doesn't want to offer any candidate what they were paying Buzz Williams. I don't know why Wojo would leave Marquette for similar money at VT.

VT is in a spot where they're going to pay more than they want to, to get someone who isn't Buzz Williams.

There are coaches that would take the job for less than what was floated as the numbers for Wojo and Willard. But once those other agents for these coaches start leveraging money in the media, the price tag gets pushed higher.

Not sure where Johnny Dawkins or Ryan Odom (UMBC) are in the order of choices but Wake Forest will not be happy if Odom comes off the board when they should have fired Danny Manning.

I think Willard did the right thing. How much more $ will SHU give him and how many more years?

Curious ...what do you do that allows you to make $600k and then $1 million in your 20s?
