Scarlet Knight Country!
RU's heartbreaking loss to Tulane in the Kentucky Invitational Tournament in 1982.

I know you old-time diehards remember this one...

Paul Thompson took a length-of-the court pass from Curtis Wallace, spun around on the baseline and sank a fallaway jump shot at the buzzer as Tulane upset previously unbeaten Rutgers, 55-54.

Thompson's basket followed an equally improbable shot by Chris Remley of Rutgers that gave the Scarlet Knights a 54-53 lead with three seconds to go. Remley was being doubleteamed and nearly lost the ball. He stumbled backward and lofted an arching 15-foot shot that fell through.

Yeah....that is a good analogy. That was a brutal loss.

Through ...this I don’t think that was quite as bad as this one...and this was number two in my book was since the St. John’s loss in the 1979 regionals with three second to go...a game where we had a 9 point lead with 9 to go and Wayne Mckoy on the bench with four fouls and we slowed it down ...

We all know if we win that game, we win and go to the second final four in four seasons ...

I got to talk to Tom Young a few years ago. He said that St John's game still haunts him. He said we would have definitely beaten Penn because they had no one who could've stopped Bailey. Also said going to two Final Fours in four years would have negated the recruiting advantage the Big East schools had over us going forward.

When it comes to heartbreaking buzzer-beaters at the RAC, this one also belongs on the list...

yup coast to coast with matador defense

also there was a Scoonie Penn 3 from the 90s that beat RU at the Conte Forum, RU had taken the lead with 3 seconds left

March 3, 1996 - Boston College 73, Rutgers 72: Scoonie Penn's long-distance "runner" swished through the net as time expired to give BC a one-point win in the regular-season finale. Penn's shot should have been credited as a three-pointer, but all eyes were focused on the hoop and no one ever recognized that both feet were behind the 19-foot, 9-inch stripe. BC trailed by three points with 44 seconds left, before Antonio Granger nailed a three-pointer to even the score at 71-71. Rutgers' Damon Santiago sank 1-of-2 free throws with :03 on the clock to give the Scarlet Knights a momentary edge.

I was in Greensboro for that game with the WRSU broadcasting team, hoping to call the regional final against Penn. The only damn time the Johnnies led that game was that tip in by McKoy. We were absolutely stunned. We were sure we would have destroyed Penn and made it back to the final four, book-ending my fours years at RU. That region was ours, as both Duke and UNC lost in the sub regional the week before. That early car ride back from NC was brutal.

Hey partner, still the loss that is the biggest punch to the gut ever. We would have had fun broadcasting that Penn game back to Central Jersey and most definitely would have won and played Magic and Michigan State in our 2nd Final Four in our 4 years . Yesterday ‘s loss feels like the worst regular season loss and brought back bad memories of 1979 . Still cannot believe we lost either game.

I was there traveled on a Rutgers bus. Ball came off at a funny angle past a well positioned bailey to mckoy.

Would have been oro third Victory of the year over the Johnnie's.

My brother taped the game on his new betamax. I watched the ending 100 times hoping it would change.

I also was in Greensboro as I traveled there with a friend. It was such a disheartening defeat. We could not sleep so we just headed back to new Jersey. It was an awful feeling. I remember we slowed the game down and still led by one point with just under 30 seconds left when the Johnnies stole the ball from Tom Brown near mid court. After a time out they ran a play and after a miss McCoy tapped in the winner. We thought we would go the the Final Four. Some guys were holding up a sign that said "Where the hell is the ACC?" North Carolina and Duke both lost before we arrived.

The Yinka Dare game was in 1993. I think we led by 2 points with less than 2 seconds left. Most felt the game was over but a GW guy in bounded and threw the ball the full 94 feet to the left of the basket. Dare grabbed it and dropped it in off the backboard. We lost in overtime after that I think 105-100. that was really heartbreaking as well.

My memory might be faulty, but as I recall, Bailey blocked McKoy's first attempt and amazingly, it went right back to him. JB was out of position after the block, so McKoy had an easy path for the putback.
We still had time afterwards, but I think Darius Griffin fumbled the inbounds pass out of bounds.

One of the most heartbreaking losses at the RAC. It's up there with the Yinka Dare loss to GW.

Agreed. I posted about the Yinka Dare game in another thread. I believe that one was a full court pass for a bucket with only 1.8 seconds left. I was there for that one and last night. Brutal.

Yes. I was there! Another bad last second loss was the Buzzer beater corner jumper by St Bonaventure against us at Jadwin in the ‘77 NIT, and losing to #1 UNLV by 1 on Reggie Theus shot at Spectrum , same year...

79 is number one in my book because of its significance. This one still hurts bad. Would have been great for this build.

The St.John's game was horrible, yes we would have beaten Penn.

I've been at the 79 Johnnies game in Greensboro, the GW Yinca Dare game, the Johnnies game at MSG and last night's game. I guess I have been at most of them. That Tulane game in the UK Invitational I listened to on the radio. I wanted to see us play Kentucky as I had gone to college in Kentucky and I always rooted against UK.

Last year vs Stony Brook..they stole the inbound with 3 seconds and nailed a 3 to send the game to overtime and then hit the winning shot with almost no time left in overtime and celebrated on our home court.
